Oben 1 Pamela Oben Professor Kimberlie Hall Composition 1 22 June 2023 Conversations about technology: How does technology shape our experiences, identity, and world? Technology, according to Sherry Turkle and Nicholas Carr, has a profound effect on how we perceive ourselves. Turkle, in her book "Alone Together," argues that technology has led to a culture of connectivity but not true connection, in which individuals feel more at ease dealing with machines than with one another. Carr, in his article "Is Google Making Us Stupid?" suggests that the constant use of technology has rewired our brains and changed the way we think, leading to a loss of deep thinking or critical thought. According to both writers, this change in perception has a great impact on our experiences and identities. While both authors agree that technology is influencing how we see reality, they have different opinions about the consequences of this change. Turkle is more critical of how technology affects interpersonal relationships, whereas Carr is more worried about how it affects creativity and intellectual inquisitiveness.
