I realized that teaching Araling Panlipunan is a tough challenge for teachers but the same with other
subjects, it also guarantees a very rewarding feeling once students can learn and apply these learnings in their
lives. Upon learning the guiding principles in the teaching of Araling Panlipunan, I realized that teachers
should not only rely on books and teach facts and theories. Rather, they should integrate the lessons in the
students’ daily experiences to raise civil awareness and develop skills necessary for life. This is the very aim
of teaching Araling Panlipunan. More than teaching important events, personalities, dates, and periods in
history, the subject itself is teaching about life. This is where integration comes in. Integration for me is the
most relevant guiding principle in which teachers should anchor their teaching strategies. Integration, as a
guiding principle, prefers questioning and problem solving to direct the process of acquiring knowledge and
skills. It reflects the interdependent real world and involves the learner’s body, feelings, senses, and intuition
in learning experience. It also bases its practices on the characteristics of the human learner and on the
interdependent nature of reality. Furthermore, it provides holistic context for learning which leads students to
acquire a greater ability to make a number of connections and to solve problems in a creative way. When
teaching become integrative, other guiding principles such as being Meaningful, Value – based, Challenging
and Active are also achieved.
I believe that in teaching Araling Panlipunan, the best method to be utilized is relating the lesson to
the child’s life. Nobody can learn for them in the same way as nobody can eat for them, live for them, or die
for them. Everybody has a way of learning. Now using this as a strategy, students become more motivated to
learn since they will be able to see connections of the lesson to their lives It will be easier for them to acquire
learning once they feel personally connected to what they’re being taught, and they are provided with
opportunities to apply the material in real life. Araling Panlipuna is a subject commonly taken for granted by
students. However, if teachers are able to teach this in an effective way, applying the guiding principles and
relating the lessons to students’ real-life experiences, this subject will become very engaging, interesting and
meaningful for the students. It only takes the right motivation and the proper strategies to make learning social
studies fun, interactive and significant for both the teacher and the students.
From now on, I am determined to master and apply these guiding principles to make teaching (not
only about Social Studies) a very rewarding job. Seeing students putting their learnings into action is a very
fulfilling experience for a teacher. I am determined to be a major contributor of their motivation and love
towards learning. I will see to it that they will not only learn within the four walls of the classroom and be
familiar with the terms and information written on the books, but they will also be allowed to develop their
skills which are necessary for survival in the real-world. I am determined to design activities that will help
them see the connection of the lessons we have to the lives that they live. Through this, they will be able to
nurture love for learning and enjoy making connections in the real world.
