ASSESSMENT OF THE CURRENT CONDITION OF DAMAK BEACH RESORT AS A TOURISM ATTRACTION IN SULTAN NAGA DIMAPORO DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC An Undergraduate Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Tourism Management Department College of Hospitality and Tourism Management MINDANAO STATE UNIVERSITY Marawi City In Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirement for the Course TRM125 Undergraduate Thesis Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management ANGELA MAE C. GALLEGO June 2022 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Background of the Study The World Tourism Organization (WTTC, 2010) identifies tourism as one of the world's fastest growing economic sectors, with beaches being a key component. Tourism has grown to be a major factor in international trade and a substantial source of income for many countries throughout the world (WTTC, 2010). For many individuals, the presence and quality of the beach is one of the most appealing and crucial factors in selecting a vacation destination. Coastal locations have been the primary attractions for an increasing number of tourists as beach tourism has grown in popularity. According to Agaaraj & Murati (2009), tourism is a dynamic and diverse industry where various tourism companies provide people with jobs. However, with the rise of the COVID-19 pandemic, it caused an unusual impact on the tourism industry, resulting in reduced business operations and massive job losses. As a result, the focus shifted to how to deal with COVID-19's effects on the tourism industry. Most tourism industry managers, according to Duarte Alonso et al. (2020), would try to figure out how to change and modify their business practices in the framework of COVID-19 and as soon as the number of virus cases has declined, a lot of beach owners will reopen their tourist beaches and it mainly points on how important beach tourism is for the economic growth of many areas. The tourism impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Lanao del Norte's beaches was massive, particularly in Sultan Naga Dimaporo's primary tourist destination, where the Damak beach resort is located. Due to virus outbreak, many people decided not to 2 plan vacations or travel to the beach because of the health scare, making it impossible for beach owners to keep paying their employees owing to a drop in sales and income, resulting in job losses. Many beach resorts have already closed due to poor visitor numbers and an inability to pay workers' salaries, energy bills, and other obligations. The Damak Beach Resort is specifically located in Barangay Daguroan, Sultan Naga Dimaporo, Lanao del Norte. It is one of the province's beach resorts. Damak Beach is actually a newly discovered beach resort. The researcher aimed to evaluate the current condition of the resort during the COVID-19 pandemic in terms of its attractions, activities, accessibility, accommodations, amenities and its compliance to the IATF guidelines. Schematic Model of the Study ASSESSMENT ON THE CONDITION OF THE DAMAK BEACH -Attractions -Activities -Accessibility -Accommodations -Amenities CURRENT CONDITION OF DAMAK BEACH RESORT Compliance to IATF Guidelines Figure1. Schematic Diagram on the Assessment of the Current Condition of Damak Beach Resort 3 The researcher presents a schematic diagram which primarily illustrates the flow of the research. As shown, the assessment of the current status of Damak beach resort based on its attraction, activities, accessibility, accommodations, amenities and also the resort’s compliance to IATF guidelines. The results of the evaluation will be the criteria and will serve as the basis of as a tourism development plan to enhance competitive advantage of Damak Beach resort. Theoretical Framework The five A's of tourism, according to Dickman's Theory (1997), indicate the basic conditions for successful tourism: Attractions, Activities, Accessibility, Accommodations and Amenities. Tourism planning is around putting together a good combination of these elements. Tourists are encouraged to leave their usual places (the origin market) and travel to new places. What people are actually going to can be considered the destination area's attraction base. Attractions are tourism resources such as the host culture, events and festivals, and a destination's natural uniqueness. Attractions are frequently the motivation for tourists visiting a particular destination and offer them with an enjoyable experience. Accessibility and transportation are required to physically transport tourists from their homes to the destinations they are visiting. The movement of international visitors is dominated by air travel around the world. 4 Activities that can be done at the destination are also considered attractions. These activities might be active, such as diving and trekking, or passive, such as sunbathing and relaxing on the beach. Accommodation is necessary near all locations; else, travelers will be unable to sleep. This may sound obvious, but investors will only invest in accommodation infrastructure if there is a good return on investment. Building the correct type of facility to meet the needs of a profitable market segment is critical to successful lodging development. Amenities are the services that are required to suit the demands of visitors when they are away from home. Public restrooms, signage, retail shopping, cafes, and emergency services are among them. Statement of the Problem This study aims to assess Damak Beach Resort’s present condition. Specifically, it aims to answer the following questions: 1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents? 2. What is the current condition of the resort in terms of: 2.1 Attraction 2.2 Accessibility 2.3 Accommodation 2.4 Amenities 2.5 Activities 3. How compliant is the resort in the implementation of IATF guidelines? Objective of the Study This study aimed to assess the current condition of the newly discovered tourist destination in Lanao del Norte which is the Damak Beach Resort in Daguroan, Sultan 5 Naga Dimaporo, in terms of attractions, activities, accessibility, accommodations and amenities. Furthermore, this study determined the resort’s compliance in the implementation of IATF guidelines in this time of pandemic. Significance of the Study The goal of this study was to evaluate Damak beach resort and its potential to become a major tourist destination in Sultan Naga Dimapro. It also aimed to make recommendations to the owner regarding the development of the area and on how to properly manage the resort for it to thrive, establish rules as limitations in order to maintain a natural-friendly environment for the benefit of both tourists and attractions, and ensure that the resort provides satisfaction and comfort to each individual. Hence, the findings of this study redound to the benefit of the following: The Local Government and Tourism Office. This research would be used as a guide for good tourism planning in Damak Beach resorts’ future tourism development activities. This study would also provide information on the current condition of Damak Beach Resort, assisting the government to determine the destination's unique needs in order for it to be developed as a major tourist attraction in the Municipality of Sultan Naga Dimaporo. The Local People. This research would benefit and inform local residents about the destination and its significance. Furthermore, it would extend their understanding of the economic benefits of tourism to them, as well as help them in appreciating and protecting the natural resources in their area. 6 The Tourists. This study has the potential to bring in more tourists both locally and internationally. They will also get a respect for the destination and contribute to its preservation. The Academe. This may contribute in the provision of useful data and information for future studies, projects, activities, and similar fields of interest. Scope and Limitation The research focused on determining Damak Beach Resorts’ overall condition in terms of attractions, activities, accessibility, accommodations and amenities, as well as its adherence to IATF guidelines. This study was limited on the information gathered from the questionnaire and was answered by the local people, visitors and tourists. The sincerity, honesty, and objectivity of the respondents had a big impact on the study's conclusions. Additional research and references were gathered from the internet, books, and other unpublished sources. This study was conducted during the alert Level 2 of COVID-19 pandemic in Sultan Naga Dimaporo specifically, in the month of April 2022 during the Holy Week and the celebration of Ramadhan. 7 Definition of Terms The following terms are utilized in this study frequently and are defined operationally for additional clarification in this study. Accessibility- refers to the transportation used by the tourist to access the destination. Activities- refers to the actions and behaviors of people in preparation for and during a trip in their capacity as consumers. Attractions- refers to the the motivation for tourists visiting a particular destination and offer them with an enjoyable experience. Accommodations- refer to places for tourists to stay while they are visiting a destination. Amenities- refer to the tourists' facilities and services at the destination, including restaurants, public toilets, tourist information centers, and communication network facilities. Beach- refers to Damak Beach Resort. It is a pebbly or sandy shore, especially by the ocean between high- and low-water marks. COVID-19 - is an infection caused by a novel corona virus currently known as severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2; formerly known as 2019nCoV), which was initially detected in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China, during an outbreak of respiratory sickness cases. Facility- a place, amenity, or piece of equipment provided in Damak Beach Resort for a particular purpose. Example of amenities in the resort includes cottages, comfort rooms and bathrooms. 8 Recreational Activities- are things people do for fun and enjoyment in Damak Beach. Banana boating, kayaking, beach volleyball and island hopping are examples of recreational activities. Services- pertain to the act of assistance offered and provided by Damak Beach Resort in terms of guest arrival from entrance to accommodation, concierge, and entertainment. 9 CHAPTER II REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES Related Literature A. Accessibility Accessibility is a key aspect of current transport, especially in terms of dependency on public transport and in the sense of foot traffic services. Today, the accessibility of the transport system in many countries is not a voluntary activity, but it is a task connected and open and necessary for up to 40 percent of the population, but also a matter of comfort for all those who use it (Rebstock, 2017). The inducible impact of accessible tourism on the transport sector and the relation between passenger transport and accessible tourism should be planned well to give impact to the economy. All open tourism has large economic impacts on the tourism industry, and by improving accessibility in the future, economic benefits can increase significantly. In addition, visitors spend a large part of their travel expenses on local transportation for the ride to the destination and back. B. Amenities Amenity is described as a resort or hotel offered at the Inn. It is a strategic instrument that helps residents distinguish themselves from their competitors and have a good company or increase profit. Public washrooms, recreational facilities, accommodations, parking area, conference center, canteen and cottages are some of the key resort facilities (Kandampully, 2013). Hotels and resorts are now growing facilities, particularly in guest rooms, to gain market from their rivals (Wilson-Mah, n.d.). In 10 addition, rivals also match the facilities provided to customers because they believe that the amenities are part of the resort or hotel accommodation and distribute them. Resorts have started to sell fitness, clubs, in-room entertainment, hairdryers, coffee makers, etc (Gilmore and Pine, 2012). Competition in the tourism industry is very strong, which is why resorts upgrade their facilities and amenities to draw tourists to a resort. Aparvatiyar (n.d) said that resorts provide unnecessary pleasant services and amenities in order to keep clients paying excessive costs. The guest resorts must have full facilities, such as toiletries, shampoo and soap, cream, etc., to have a comfortable stay. C. Activities When recreating to engage in something like tourism, leisure activities provide fun. They are the origins of joy and provide rest for the concept and body of one (Routledge 2013). Plentifun (2018) suggested that there are many recreational activities at the lodge that people want to get and enjoy with friends and family members, regardless of age, such as fishing, sailing, scuba diving, browsing, etc. In addition, a variety of sports such as cricket, baseball, basketball, and volleyball can typically be enjoyed. In one’s life, leisure time is all about creating lovely moments that produce reminiscences that one can consider and smile about. There are many kinds of activities that the visitor can experience and enjoy their stay. This includes entertainment, sports, adventure, and other forms of leisure activities. Recreational activities are a compound or variables for the remainder of the day to think about the host community, endeavor and observe the eco-friendly climate and environment. It also entails an unhealthy pastime of physical effort such as beach volleyball, kayaking, and eventually banana boating (Ross & Iso-Ahola, 2015). 11 Recreational activities are essential to the overall satisfaction of tourists (Baxter, 2010). In addition, Costa, et al. (20014) claimed that the recreational services offered in hotels should involve elements that expand their imagination to relax individuals, enabling them to explore distinctive aspects of life and useful tools for their social interaction. D. Accommodation Tourism is a social, cultural, and economic phenomenon that involves individuals traveling to nations or places that are different from their regular surroundings. Their movement could be for personal or business/professional reasons. These people can be tourists, excursionists, residents or non-residents, all of whom are referred to as visitors, and tourism refers to the activities that they carry out. Some of the activities they participate in imply tourism expenditure, such as the lodging or food they consume. Accommodation serves as a base for travelers to engage in any activities at a destination, hence tourism would be completed in the absence of accommodation. Undoubtedly, the largest and most prevalent sub-sector of the tourism economy is lodging or accommodations. With very few exceptions, travelers need a place to rest and reenergize while passing through or staying in a tourist spot. (Cooper, et al. 2011) According to Cooper et al.2011, most of the time, when travelers set out on a journey with the intention of sightseeing, they require some kind of lodging to relax and refuel. Therefore, it seemed that human migration required lodging. There are several examples of accommodation throughout the history of humanity. Regarding size and amenities, there are many different types and organizational structures for lodging, but providing for guests is their primary goal. 12 E. Attraction Attractions are an important part of tourism. They are frequently referred to as "tourist attractions" since they attract tourists. Attractions are the places, people, events, and things that make up the objects of the tourist gaze and attract tourists to destinations. Common examples include natural and cultural sites, historical places, monuments, zoos and game reserves, aquaria, museums and art galleries, gardens, architectural structures, theme parks, sports facilities, festivals and events, wildlife, and people. The development of the tourism industry is inextricably linked with the history of attractions. Tourism attractions, according to Gunn (2012), are an important aspect of tourism destinations and one of the four core segments of the tourism system. Attractions are placed within the destination and serve as the foundation of the destination's tourism product. A destination that lacks prospective or actual tourism attractions cannot be developed as a tourism destination. There are many different types of attractions, but not all of them may be used for tourism, thus those that are must be designated as tourism attractions. Tourism attractions are one of the primary reasons why tourists visit a destination and are part of the basic tourism resources. F. COVID-19 and Tourism The worldwide outbreak of Covid-19 has brought the world to a halt, with tourism suffering the most serious consequences of all major economic sectors. According to the World Tourism Organization, the closure of borders, airports, and hotels, as well as limits on mass gatherings, land travel, and related services, has put 100 to 120 million jobs at danger around the world. 13 The government of the Philippines closed Luzon's airports on March 20 as part of the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ), which began on the island on March 16. The tourism industry has already begun to feel the effects of the pandemic on its performance. Travel restrictions and procedures in other nations began in January 2020 and have had an influence on Philippine foreign visitor arrivals. Domestic visitors, on the other hand, have cut back on their travel because to concerns about getting COVID-19. According to the Department of Tourism, in the first quarter of 2020, international tourist receipts fell by 36% to PHP85 billion, compared to the same period in 2019. Because we are in the midst of a pandemic, predicting its long-term consequences is extremely challenging. We tend to become less interested in investing and more interested in saving our capital during pandemics, resulting in lower economic growth. G. Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases The Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Illnesses is a task force established by the Philippine government's executive branch to address issues related to emerging infectious diseases in the country. President Benigno Aquino III signed Executive Order No. 168 in 2014, which established the IATF-EID. It was created as a tool for the Philippine government to assess, monitor, contain, control, and prevent the development of any potential epidemic. In January 2020, the IATF-EID met to discuss the mounting viral threat. They decided to control the spread of the new virus, which was initially known as 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) and was later renamed to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus that causes COVID-19, in Wuhan, China. 14 President Duterte convened the IATF-EID on March 9, 2020, in response to an increase in COVID-19 cases in the Philippines. 15 CHAPTER III METHODOLOGY Research Locale Figure 2. Map of Damak Beach Resort Sultan Naga Dimaporo, formerly known as Karomatan, is a coastal town in the province of Lanao del Norte in the Philippines. It is a 5th-class municipality in the province of Lanao del Norte, Philippines. The operation of beach resorts in the municipality of Sultan Naga Dimaporo is very important for local economic growth and development due to the municipality's location as a coastal municipality. The importance is based on the socioeconomic dimension of the people in the community, not only those who work at the beach resorts but also those who work in the local economy. It has benefited local citizens in a variety of ways, including providing jobs, a source of revenue, local tourism, showcasing local assets, and endorsing programs that assist the community. The operation of beach resorts 16 helped different sectors, which was beneficial to tourism growth and economic development in the rural economy. This study was conducted at Barangay Daguroan, Sultan Naga Dimaporo Lanao del Norte, where the Damak Beach Resort is located. This beach resort is privately owned and managed by the owner itself. Research Design The researcher used a descriptive-evaluative research design, it is a collection of data describing some phenomenon that is may or may not be quantifiable through the use of close-ended scales, open-ended survey questions, observation, and interviews (Robin Hubbard 2017). The goal of this study was to analyze or compare the results to some predetermined or postulated standards. Respondents of the Study The respondents of the study were locals of Sultan Naga Dimaporo and some visitors of the municipality, age ranging from 18 years old to 65 years old. A total of 150 questionnaires were distributed for 14 days, however; 101 questionnaires were retrieved. To gather data from the respondents, the researcher used Convenience Sampling Method for the respondents consisting of on-site same-day local visitors. Furthermore, the researcher followed the minimum safety protocols and mandates of the Inter-Agency Task Force of the province of Lanao del Norte. Research Instrument To get the appropriate data needed, the researcher provided a checklist for the questionnaire. The checklist was adopted from the study of Nasa et.al (2018) on the study of Nature-based Tourists’ Perceptions on visiting National Park: The evidence from 17 Thailand but few modifications were made to suit in the present study. The questionnaire aimed to know the current condition of Damak Beach Resort through the use of the 4point Likert Scale developed by psychologist Rensis Likert. According to Cynthia Vinney (2013), Likert Scale was the tool that can best utilize a study since it allows respondents to define their level of agreement or disagreement for a series of items on a symmetric agree-disagree scale. As a result, the range reflects the intensity of their feelings for a particular question. The researcher also conducted a semi-structured interview to the employees and owner of Damak Beach Resort in order to know their plans for Damak Beach Resort. Data Gathering Procedure The researcher made a permission letter to the owner of Damak Beach Resort and its staff, endorsed by the Dean of the College of Hospitality and Tourism Management and from the adviser of the research. After the approval of letters made by the researcher, consent form was discussed by the research and later signed by the respondents, after that the researcher began to conduct the study and evaluated Damak Beach Resorts’ current condition. The researcher then compiled and collected data from this study by providing a modified checklist questionnaire to the tourists and staff of Damak Beach Resort, conducted an on-site inspection, and conducted an interview with the owner and management on the current condition of the beach and the current and future plans of the beach. 18 Data Analysis Procedure Statistical Tools/Treatment 1. Data analysis for this study was done in two steps, the preliminary analysis and the main analysis. For preliminary analysis which involves mainly descriptive statistics to summarize data, the demographic characteristics of the respondents were outlined in order to simplify the understanding of the data. The quantitative data was analyzed by descriptive statistics and the results were presented in frequency, percentage, weighted mean and standard deviation. Demographic Characteristics of the Respondents The demographic profile of the respondents is described as follow: Table 1- Frequency and percentage distribution of respondents based on their Gender Gender of Frequency Percentage % the Respondents Male 61 60.4 Female 40 39.6 Total 101 100.0 Table 1 presents the frequency and percentage distribution of the respondents based on their gender. It shows that sixty-one (60.4%) of the respondents were male and the rest of forty (39.6%) of them were female. It implies that most of the respondents 20 were male due to the respondent’s personal interest to their activities offered specially in fishing and boating. In the study of Virga Tria Ilahana, (2022) on Public Perception about Virtual Tourism for Conservation Area Promotion, it shows that there were 61% of female who answered virtually and 39% were male. The relatively large number of female respondents in her study was due to women's low physical activity; respondents had a greater chance of filling out online surveys. By that, it shows how males tend to be more physically active than females. Table 2-Frequency and percentage distribution of respondents based on their Address Address of the Respondents Frequency Percentage % Bacolod Baroy Cagayan De Oro Cebu Iligan Kapatagan Kauswagan Kolambugan Lala Maigo Marawi City Sultan Naga Dimaporo Total 7 5 3 1 2 7 1 1 35 1 2 36 101 6.9 5.0 3.0 1.0 2.0 6.9 1.0 1.0 34.7 1.0 2.0 35.6 100.0 On table 2, it presents the frequency and percentage distribution according to the respondents’ address. It shows most of the respondents, thirty-six (35.6%) comes from the Municipality of Sultan Naga Dimaporo followed by thirty-five (34.7%) of them comes from the municipality of Lala. There were seven (6.9%) of the respondents comes from the Municipality of Kapatagan, seven (6.9%) of them from Bacolod and five (5%) of them form Baroy. Also, there were a few of three (3%) comes from Cagayan de Oro, two (2%) of them comes from Iligan City, two (2%) Marawi City, and one from 21 Kolambugan, Cebu, Maigo, and Kauswagan. It implies that most of the respondents were from Sultan Naga Dimaporo since Damak Beach Resort is located in this municipality and it is more accessible for them to travel from their town to the attraction, followed by the municipality of Lala where the main tourists of Pikalawag Beach in Sultan Naga Dimaporo came from. Table 3-Frequency and percentage distribution of respondents based on their Tribe Tribe of the Frequency Percentage % respondents Bisaya 52 51.5 Cebuano 41 40.6 Hiligaynon 1 1.0 Ilocana 1 1.0 Maranao 5 5.0 Subanen 1 1.0 Total 101 100.0 On table 3, it presents the frequency and the percentage distribution according to the tribes of the respondents. It shows that more than a half, fifty-two (51.5%), of the respondents were Bisaya followed by forty-one (40.6%) of them who were Cebuano, a few of five (5%) of them were Maranao, and (1%) were Ilocana, Hiligaynon, and a Subanen. This implies that the majority of the respondents were Bisaya since the study was conducted during the Lenten Season, and mostly Bisaya and Cebuano are Christians, and it is part of their culture to commemorate this season in the beaches of our country. Few of the respondents were Maranaos because during the conduct of the study it was Ramadan. Shakona et.al (2015) stated that during the month of Ramadan, Muslims are prohibited by Sharia law from visiting places where they may be involved in Haram. Such establishments serve alcohol and allow for immoral and sinful conduct. Immoral acts can occur on beaches where women do not cover their bodies or at parties and 22 celebrations where alcohol is served and men and women mix. God has asked Muslims to lower their gaze during this holy month, which is difficult to do when they are on vacation. Table 4-Frequency and percentage distribution of respondents based on their Religion Religion of the Frequency Percentage % Respondents Adventist 1 1.0 Born Again 4 4.0 Iglesia ni Cristo 6 5.9 Islam 6 5.9 Roman Catholic 84 83.2 Total 101 100.0 On table 4, it presents the frequency and percentage distribution of the religion of the respondents. It shows that eighty-four (83%) of the respondents were part Roman Catholic. A few of six (6 or 5.9%) of them were part of the Iglesia ni Cristo, six (5.9%) of them were part of the Islam, four (4%) of them were part of the Born-again group, and one (1%) of them were part of the Adventist. The questionnaires were distributed on April 3 to 17, 2022, which was during the Lenten season. In that period, Filipinos who practice Roman Catholicism usually go to the beach as part of their tradition. Summer vacation is also observed among students and educators in the country's Basic and Secondary Education. According to Asia Society, the Philippines is the only Christian nation in Asia, with more than 86 percent of the population Roman Catholic, 6 percent belonging to various nationalized Christian cults, and another 2 percent belonging to well over 100 Protestant denominations, with Lanao del Norte alone constituting 57 percent of the catholic population (Rebuya et.al, 2020). 23 Table 5-Frequency and percentage distribution of respondents based on their Monthly Income Monthly income Frequency Percentage % of the Respondents P5,000-P9,999 19 18.8 P10,000- P14,999 24 23.8 P15,000-19,999 18 17.8 P20,000-24,999 15 14.9 P25,000 and above 25 24.8 Total 101 100.0 On table 5, it presents the frequency and percentage distribution of the respondents’ monthly salary. It shows that twenty-five (24.8%) of the respondents have a monthly salary of P25,000 and above followed by twenty-four (23.8%) of them have P10,000 to P14,999, nineteen (18.8%) of them have P5,000 to P9,999, eighteen (17.8%) have P15,000 to P19,999, and fifteen (14.9%) of them have P20,000 to P24,999. This implies that the monthly salary of the respondents were different from one another but many of them have a monthly salary of P25,000 and above which also indicates that respondents having this amount salary more likely can afford visiting the attraction. According to Wall and Mathieson (2006), one of the three main factors influencing travel is higher income. Most studies show a clear relationship between increased travel and increased income. 24 Assessment on the current condition of Damak Beach Resort in terms of the following: Table 6-Frequency, percentage and mean distribution of respondents based on Attraction EXPECTATIONS Attraction SD D A S Weight Standard INTERPRETATION 1 2 3 A ed Deviation 4 Mean 1. The overall weighted mean for the attraction indicator is WM = 3.46, shows that the respondents strongly agree with the Damak Beach Resort’s attractiveness. The study also shows that Damak Beach Resort has a good scenery that is best for relaxation (WM = 3.65), a surrounding that is a picturesque (WM = 3.46), an abundant natural resource (WM = 3.38) given that the area was once a marine sanctuary. Also, the shoreline and beach that are cleaned regularly (WM = 54) and maintained by its two caretakers every morning. According to Nasa et. al (2018) on Nature-based Tourists’ Perceptions on visiting National Park: The evidence from Thailand, the study pointed out that tourist's overall 25 perception level was high for attraction with an average mean of (4.65). This indicates that the natural beauty and value of the forest were remarkable to attract tourists. This finding supports Damak Beach Resort's attraction as one of the factors that attract tourists to the area. Table 7-Frequency, percentage Activities Activities SD D A 1 2 3 1. The overall weighted mean, WM = 3.52, shows that the respondents strongly agree with Damak Beach Resort’s activities which means that they provided the resort provided adequate activities. Accordingly, the respondents strongly agree that the beach has activities 26 suitable for all ages (WM = 3.45) and they offer activities such as beach volleyball, boating, fishing, snorkeling, and other beach activities (WM = 3.57). The respondents also strongly agree that the beach’s activities were worth to pay for (WM = 3.37), captures tourists to visit the place (WM = 3.73), and gives satisfaction and amusement to the tourists (WM = 3.50). Kanittinsutitong, N., and Wang, (2022), conducted a study on the Guidelines for the Development of Tourism for Tourists with Different Demographic Characteristics in Sichon District. There is a moderate positive impact in activities with (β= 0.451, p0.05), which can be identified as the element with the greatest impact on tourist satisfaction in Sichon when compared to the overall weighted mean of activities in Damak Beach WM = 3.52. The overall weighted mean, WM = 2.25, shows that the respondents perceived Damak Beach Resort’s accessibility less accessible. Accordingly, a Facebook page for online reservation (WM = 3.46) and a mobile number for reservation (WM = 3.36) make the beach very accessible for the respondents. Having signage provided to the guests for directions (WM = 3.03) makes the beach accessible for the respondents. However, the 28 beach resort requires a long travel from the town proper to the resort (WM = 1.77) makes the resort less accessible. The beach cannot be easily reached by any type of land transportation (WM = 1.40) and the beach is not near the highway (WM = 1.38) that makes the beach less accessible for the respondents. There were two routes to get into the destination, one is from Pikalawag Beach to Damak Beach which takes 45-minute travel thru pump boats and the other one is from the nearest entrance of the destination, from Barangay Bangaan, to Damak Beach. It takes more than 20 minutes to get into Bangaan from town proper though land transportation and 10 minutes’ travel from Bangaan to Damak through pump boats. As seen, the destination was less accessible because it was situated in a far flung area, behind the mountain where there were no access roads direct to the destination. According to Chamodya, 2020 on the Impact of 5A's on Domestic Tourists' Satisfaction in Ella Sri Lanka, accessibility has a positive impact on tourists' satisfaction, with a customer satisfaction rate of 71%. It means that infrastructure such as roads and parking lots, transportation facilities such as public transportation availability, and operations such as travel routes, service frequency, and cost incurred are satisfactory. Compared to the weighted mean on the accessibility of Damak Beach Besort with WM=2.25 which is less accessible, it is evident that the owner should focus more on developing modes of transportation and the safety management in the resort. Henderson, (2006) also proves that accessibility is an important factor in attracting tourists to a particular destination. 29 Table 9-Frequency, percentage and mean distribution of respondents based on Accommodation Accommodation EXPECTATIONS SD D A SA Weighte Standard INTERPRETATION 1 2 3 4 d Mean Deviation 1. The overall weighted mean, WM = 3.23, shows that the respondents agree with the resort’s accommodation. Accordingly, the respondents strongly agree that the accommodations in the resort were appropriate for the tourists (WM = 3.31) and in a good condition (WM = 3.31), and cottages were in good quality and well ventilated (WM = 3.30). Furthermore, the respondents agree that the accommodations in the resort were not prone to danger and any other circumstances (WM = 3.00) and the information about emergencies was widely disseminated (WM = 3.25). Moreover, the findings of Robustin, Sularso et. al (2018) in the Contribution of Tourist Attraction, Accessibility and Amenities in Creating Tourist Loyalty in Indonesia, also shows a positive impact on tourists’ satisfaction with an 30 average weighted mean of WM=3.78. This means, accommodations in Damak Beach Resort are safe and also the infrastructure is in a good quality. The overall 31 weighted mean, WM = 2.69, shows that the respondents agree with the condition of Dakak Beach Resort’s amenities. It shows that the respondents agree with the resort’s amenities such as an adequate (WM = 3.20) and clean (WM = 3.06) restrooms, safe and drinkable water faucet (WM = 2.98), continuous supply of water for rinsing (pangbanlaw) (WM = 3.08), enough washing area for kitchen utensils and hand washing (WM = 2.88), souvenir shop or sari-sari store where the tourist can buy foods, swimming clothes and rent life jackets or salbabida (WM = 3.18), and provided adequate trash bins and easy to locate (WM = 3.20). The respondents strongly agree with the resort’s adequate cottages to cater the tourist (WM = 3.31). However, they disagree with the resort’s amenities such as separate restrooms for men and women (WM = 2.08), and sufficient and separate grilling station for pork and non-pork (WM = 2.33). They strongly disagree with the resort’s amenities such as provided parking spaces for the tourist (WM = 1.50) and videoke for entertainment (WM = 1.44). Given that Damak Beach Resort has no electricity because it was a newly discovered resort, they cannot offer any videoke for entertainment since they only have three solar lamps and a generator. Despite this, the respondents still evaluated the resort as “agree”, meaning it has adequate facilities to suffice the needs of the tourists. The result of this study is almost consistent with the findings of Robustin, Sularso et. al (2018) in the Contribution of Tourist Attraction, Accessibility and Amenities in Creating Tourist Loyalty in Indonesia. Having an average weighted mean of WM= 3.89 it implies that amenities have a positive impact on tourists’ satisfaction. This means that clean and comfortable toilets and other sanitary facilities, hotels and inns, and food stalls are all factors that influence tourist satisfaction. Amenities 32 are any facilities that serve to meet the needs of tourists staying in a specific location (Yoeti, 2003). If these facilities meet the needs of tourists, they will be satisfied. The overall weighted mean, WM = 3.06, shows that the resort moderately practiced the IATF 33 guidelines. Accordingly, the resort moderately practice limited capacity of tourist to seventy percent (70%) as per IATF guidelines for areas under level 2 (WM = 3.22), and fully vaccinated on-site workers/employees against COVID-19 (WM = 3.10). The resort practice providing record/logbook for contact tracing (WM = 2.27). Furthermore, the resort highly practices strict minimum public health protocols such as wearing face mask and practice social distancing and body temperature check upon entry (WM = 3.26), and installing visual cues or signages on mask wearing, hand hygiene, DOH hotlines, and other health and safety reminders (WM = 3.44). Guerero et. al (2022) studied the Effectiveness of the Strategies applied by Theme Parks in CALABARZON to Factors Influencing Tourists’ Buying Decisions amidst pandemic. According to the findings, respondents indicated that safety precautions were very effective (WM=3.81). It implies that implementing safety measures in theme park operations is a highly effective way of enticing tourists to visit establishments. The proper implementation of safety measures in theme park operations can entice tourists to spend their leisure time there. Providing and ensuring a theme park capacity of 50%, on the other hand, will encourage people to visit the park and feel safe. Since the result of the evaluation was moderately practiced, Damak Beach Resort was really considering the safety and the health of the tourists. With this, they were really helping in mitigating the spread of the COVID-19 virus while operating in the new normal. 34 CHAPTER V SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS This chapter presents a summary of the findings, conclusion and recommendations from the results obtained from the survey. Summary of Findings This study entitled Assessment of the Current Condition of Damak Beach Resort as a Tourism Destination in Sultan Naga Dimaporo during the Covid-19 Pandemic was conducted at Daguroan, Sultan Naga Dimaporo during the Alert Level 2 of the COVID19 pandemic specifically, in the month of April 2022. This study was conducted to help the Municipality of Sultan Naga Dimaporo, improve their tourism destination with regards to assessing the current condition of Damak Beach Resort and their compliance with the IATF guidelines for the new normal in that way they can boost their economy through tourism. The researchers used descriptive-evaluative research design in which the researchers presented a modified checklist survey questionnaire that was distributed to the respondents who visited Damak Beach Resort. The data were tabulated, analyzed, and interpreted using statistical methods such as frequency, percentage, weighted mean, and standard deviation. The findings answer the study's objectives. Conclusion Damak Beach Resort has a potential to be one of the main tourist destination in Sultan Naga Dimaporo and make the municipality more famous when it comes to tourism. Based on the findings, the majority of the respondents were: male 35 (61%), from the municipality of Sultan Naga Dimaporo (36%), tribes were Bisaya (52%), religion were Roman Catholic (84%) and has monthly income of P25,000 and above (25%). The assessment of the respondents on the current condition of Damak Beach Resort based on attraction with a weighted mean of (WM=3.46), meaning it is very attractive. In terms of activities, it has a weighted mean of (WM=3.52), indicating that they provide activities such as fishing, boating, and snorkeling. As seen, Damak Beach Resort is less accessible with a weighted mean of (WM=2.25), due to the remote location of the area. As of accommodation, it has a weighted mean of (WM=3.23), it signifies that the respondents strongly agree that accommodation facilities like cottages were provided and are in good condition. With regards to amenities, it has a weighted mean of (WM=2.69) which conveys that the resort has an adequate facility to sustain the tourists like, comfort rooms, water supply, washing area and souvenir shop. Furthermore, Damak Beach Resort moderately practices the IATF guidelines with a weighted mean of (WM=3.06) that make the tourist safe from the COVID-19 virus. The purpose of this assessment was to make recommendations to future researcher and the owner in making a development plan for the area to make it known not just in the area of Sultan Naga Dimaporo but also in the whole country. 36 Recommendations Based on the findings, the following recommendations were made: As to attraction, Damak Beach Resort was evaluated as very attractive by the respondents. It was clearly one of the finest Beach in Lanao del Norte knowing that it was used to be a marine sanctuary, it is recommended that they should implement sustainable tourism like locating the fragile areas of the resort and put restrictions to protect the biodiversity and the natural resources of the area. They should also continue maintaining the cleanliness of the waters and the shoreline. As to accessibility, Damak Beach Resort was evaluated by the respondents as “less accessible”. Meaning it cannot easily be reached by any land or sea transportation. Provided also that the area was far from the main road and it takes 20 minutes to travel from town to the barangay where you can ride a boat for 10 minutes to actually get into the destination. There was also few signage for directions that you can see upon entry as to suggest, they should add more signage for tourist convenience. Added to that, there were only few boats and motorcycles that travels from the barangay to the attraction and that causes so much inconvenience to the tourists. So as to recommend, the they should implement pump boat registration going to Damak Beach and other resorts as a tourist vehicle and there should be an organized vehicle like (TODA) to control the fare price. As to amenities, the resort was evaluated as “agree”. Meaning they have facilities but some were unavailable. Knowing that the resort was newly discovered, the area has no electric power yet that is why they cannot operate any technologies 37 such as videoke or televisions. The resort only has three solar lamps and a generator but still it cannot supply the needs of the tourist if there will be a lot of them who visits the destination. As to recommend, they should put-up more solar lamps and even electric post if possible. Furthermore, the facilities were not yet fully furnished and concrete, it was still artificial and is made of wood and that makes the facilities unattractive. The resort only has one comfort room and it makes some of the Muslim tourists uncomfortable. As to recommend, they should focus more on the development of their facilities, especially in making separate comfort rooms to provide comfort to the tourist. And also the owner should putup electricity for the security of the tourists who will be staying overnight. As to accommodation, the owner should provide adequate rooms for tourists who wished to stay overnight. Also, they should place additional signage for directions as to where they could locate the comfort rooms and the cottages inside the resort. It is also advisable that the rooms should have is own comfort rooms and water system for the convenience of the tourists. As to activities, the resort offers activities that are suitable for everyone but they should implement rules that prohibit any activities that includes cutting of trees, destroying rock formations, and they should discourage all tourist from bringing the white sands and corals at home as a souvenir because it can lead to the distraction of the area. As to IATF Guidelines, it is advisable that the resort should maintain the availability of the record book to track the inbound tourists to keep them away from the COVID-19 virus. It is also recommended that all staffs should take their 38 booster shots and continue wearing facemasks and frequently sanitize the area. The management should also monitor the tourist limited capacity to mitigate the spread of the virus. 39 REFERENCES Agaaraj and Murati (2009) Tourism an important sector of economy development retrieved from https://ideas.repec.org/a/cbu/jrnlec/y2009v1p83-90.html Retrieved on 2009 Chamodya (2020) Impact of 5A's on Domestic Tourists' Satisfaction in Ella Sri Lanka Cooper, C., et al.
