correctly.

Read the article below and answer the questions that follow.
Where is Auntie Xiong?
Wuhan, China, the origin of the Corona Virus was placed on a lockdown starting January of this
year in the hopes of slowing down the spread of the deadly virus. As the lockdown was slowly
lifted, something in the city's old town feels off. Where is Auntie Xiong?
During the Pre-Corona Virus era, Auntie Xiong could be seen on a street food stall cooking fresh
mianwo--a doughnut-shaped snack best paired with rice or noodles.
Auntie Xiong as her customers call her, had been serving regular customers and curious tourists
for over a decade. This allowed her to raise her family of three in the city.
A 50-year-old Wuhan resident named
Zeng said that it is the best mianwo his
family had ever tasted. When they heard
that lockdown will soon be lifted, they
look forward to enjoying their delicious
mianwo soon.
But people like Zeng will never have
that mianwo again. Auntie Xiong is
gone.

Auntie Xiong is one of the many fatalities of the
coronavirus outbreak. She is suspected to have
contracted the disease.
“I was so sad when I heard [she died],” Zeng said,
who had come to know Auntie Xiong well from
chatting with her.
“When we go onto the streets again after these two
months, the buildings will be the same, the trees will
be the same, but some people will be gone.”

The death of Auntie Xiong triggered a wave of nostalgia and grief among Wuhan people.
The closed restaurants and missing familiar faces were a stark reminder of the permanent
wounds the virus has left behind in the city of 11 million people and will leave in its path across
the globe.
As the city reopened for business on Wednesday, more than 10 weeks after the January 23
lockdown, residents have celebrated the occasion by sharing photos on social media of their first
meal after the end of the lockdown.
At some point, the city’s eaters are expected to return to the streets in full force. But Auntie Xiong’s
stall, which has been featured in Wuhan travel guides and food shows, will not be a part of it.
In an interview with Ergeng Video published in January 2018, Xiong, whose full name is Xiong
Guifeng, said she began selling mianwo more than 10 years ago.
Every morning, she got up around 3 a.m. or 4 a.m. to prepare the ingredients – rice batter and
soybean paste – and began frying the dough at 5 a.m.
“Sometimes I feel it’s not only for my family, but also for the old neighbors who have been eating
[my mianwo] for more than a decade,” she said.
“Some people moved away, but they still travelled across the city to buy mianwo from me. I feel
really satisfied when I think of that.”
Xiong now belongs to an unknown number of people who died before they could be tested for the
virus, possibly because of a shortage of testing kits at the peak of the outbreak in Wuhan.
Xiong’s death did not attract national attention and she is not on the government’s list of martyrs
that includes doctors, nurses and police officers killed by the virus.
But to her old customers, the passing of the beloved breakfast chef was a blow no less devastating.
Stories like Auntie Xiong’s are now repeating in other parts of the world as the virus tears through
the global community (Zhou 2020).

What's In
The story of Auntie Xiong is written by a Chinese journalist, Viola Zhou. It is a product
of interview and research by the journalist herself. With the training and credibility of a
journalist, one can say that the story above is true and reliable. Now, let's have some more.

What’s New
In researching, the writer must consult sources to make a strong viewpoint. However,
these sources must be reliable enough to validate his/her points. These can be from books,
the internet, newspapers, and other reliable materials.
There are two types of sources you can use.
1. Primary Sources
These are sources produced by people who created, witnessed, or participated
in a certain event. Primary sources are known to be "raw materials of history"
because of its originality.
Examples: paintings, poems, essays, research papers, diaries and
letters
2. Secondary Sources
These are sources that are always based on primary sources. Secondary
sources cannot exist without any bases.
Examples: reaction papers, painting analyses, poem analyses,
historical interpretation of diaries, and letters.
Both primary and secondary sources can be reliable references. On the other hand,
sources without any basis may contain malicious information better known as fake
news, scam or hoax.
Now, try this:
Liezel wrote a story about a girl who survived the Corona Virus. Sam was amazed by the
story and told his friends on how amazing the story was.
From this scenario, who is the primary source? secondary source?
The primary source is Liezel because she is the source of the story. On the other hand,
Sam is the secondary source as he shares what he feels about Liezel's story.

Now that you know what sources to pick in making your essays, research papers, and
reports, it is now time to learn how to acknowledge them. In this lesson, you will learn two
ways of acknowledging sources within your text.
What's New
Have you experienced checking the internet or books from the library to complete your
assigned essays? Did you know that you have to acknowledge those sources?
In using the ideas of others, one must properly acknowledge the source by indicating
the name of the expert or authority in appropriate formats.
Here are the two widely used formats for referencing:
1. The American Psychological Association is commonly known as the APA. This
referencing style is used for the social sciences.
Examples: Psychology, Law, Business
2. The Modern Language Association is commonly known as the MLA. This
referencing style is used for liberal arts and humanities.
Examples: History, English, Religion
There are two basic ways of acknowledging your sources in these formats, the intext citation, and bibliography.
IN-TEXT CITATION
The in-text citation refers to the sources acknowledge within the text using the two
formats. This is used when a certain text is reworded from the original source. Take a look
at the chart below:

Remember to always reword ideas from your sources.
Now, try to take a look at this.
a. Giangan states that as early as five years old, children are taught how to read. Like eating
and drinking, reading is an essential life skill (2016). It enables the person to function
smoothly on his day-to-day activity, from reading traffic signs to filling up forms.
b. Reading includes the understanding of the text at various aspects such as the entire
meaning, the connection of words and punctuations, and the linking of the ideas (Giangan
page 213).
What is wrong with these citations?
On the first example, the year is placed away from the author's name. On the second
example, the word "page" should not be used. Always remember that the year for APA and
the page number for MLA should immediately appear right after the author's name.

Knowing where to find these details from a material is very important for you to proceed to
the next topic.
What's New
Bibliography, or also known as the reference list, is the directory of all your sources in
alphabetical order. Just like the in-text citation, bibliography follows two formats, the APA and
MLA. This can be placed in the last few pages of your paper. This list follows a specific format
indicated below:
APA (7th Edition, 2019)
Author's Surname, First Name Initials. (Date of Publication). Title of the book.
Publisher.
Example:
Giangan, A.C. (2011). Courage: How to conquer life. USC Press.
In APA, notice that the first letter of the book title is capitalized. The subtitle comes next. If the
title and subtitle contain a proper noun, then the first letter of the proper noun must be
capitalized.
MLA (8th Edition, 2019)
Author's Surname, First Name. Title of Book. City of Publication, Publisher, Publication
Date.
Example:
Giangan, Adam. How to Conquer Life. Cebu City, USC Press, 2011.
In MLA, notice that the book title is italicized. The first letter of every word in MLA is
capitalized except for the prepositions.
Can you identify the punctuation marks used in APA format? How about the MLA?
The APA format uses the period and parenthesis while the MLA format uses the period
and comma.
It is possible for a book or any other resource material to have more than one author.
For the format, take a look at the chart below:

List the author's last names and initials. Add a comma after the initial of the first author. Use
ampersand "&" instead of "and." The name of the authors arrangement must be the same as the
book.

Authors' name arrangement should be the same with the book. Note that the last name of author 1
comes first but first name of author 2 comes first. Use "and" instead of ampersand "&".
