Engineering Design 4WBB0 2023-2024 First self-study assignment report (M01) Name: Shireen Dan Student ID: 1844741 Group number: 094 Hours spent: 3 of 17 hrs/wk Answer questions related to group effectiveness: • What do you bring to the group in terms of (non-)technical knowledge and skills ? (technical: e.g. knowledge, hobbies, computer skills; non-technical: e.g. planning, creativity, abstracting) • For which contribution to the project can you take responsibility? See the list of CBL modules provided for inspiration. • Describe yourself and your abilities regarding working in a group and taking part in a design project. In regards to my non-technical skills, I bring qualities such as planning and abstract thinking to the team, as these traits allow me to establish well-structured strategies and conceptualise innovative ideas effectively. I would also like to assist with adminstrative responsibilities such as minute-taking and reporting, which would support the team by maintaining clear communication and documentation for future reference. In terms of technical skills, I can contribute in generating ideas for product innovation and sustainable product development. Furthermore, I am eager to take on the challenge of app design, viewing it as an opportunity for developing my own skills as a computer scientist. When it comes to interpersonal skills in a group setting, I would like to describe myself as a dedicated and highly collaborative indidual. I am unafraid to speak up and voice my own opinions, but I also make space for other’s to express their thoughts. Above all, however, I maintain a strong commitment to continuous learning. Throughout this course, I am most excited about acquiring new knowledge, concepts and skills that can enhance my contribution to the team. Design goal: List your ideas about problems concerning sustainable behaviour that your team could address. What type of target user are you thinking of, involved in what kind of activity? And what kind of (consumer) product could help solve the problem. Try to find literature or other references to support your choices. I currently have two ideas concerning the intersection of sustainability and waste management that our team could tackle – food waste and plastic waste. To tackle food waste, a possible target user is regular people who do groceries. A consumer product to address this problem could be a food monitoring app. This would meet all of the requirements enlisted for the product and can be presented as a digital prototype. A user can enter their weekly groceries and expiration dates. As the week progresses (or based on the frequency selected by the user), the user can enter the products they consumed and the products remaining such that the app can recommend recipes with the remaining items and provide inventory alerts such that users only buy items that they need. To tackle plastic waste, a possible target user could be festivals and other events due to the sheer amount of plastic waste generated by single-use cups and cutlery. For these purposes, recyclable cutlery and cups can be generated to be outsourced to such events.
