lntroduction
Specifications
The ST5000 hydraulic is a permanenlly installed autopilot for hydraulic;
steered power boats. The basic system comprises of 4 units:

The control head is Sea Talk compatible and lherefore can share aD dalé
lransmitled from other Aulohelm Sea Talk instruments:
• Automatic adjustment of aulopilot gain with boat speed (ST50 Speed
Tridata instrument)
• T rack information from either Navdata or Navcenlcr instruments
provides waypoint control from the autopilot
• Sea Talk compatible
• Autornalic con Ipass devialion correclion
• Boat speed from the Speed instrument for optimum Track keeping
performance
• Nortl1erly/Soulhe1 ly heading compensalion
• Sea T alk compatibility also allows additional fixed and handheld autopilc
control units to be easily connected at secondary steering and control
posilions
• Aulomalic heading deadband
• Built-in radio navigation interface

The Control unit also includes a built in Navigation interface for use with a1
position transducer (GPS, Decca, Loran) transmilting NMEA O183 data.
The ST5000 is supplied with a reversing gear pump which is driven
directly from the control head. This pump is capable of operating wilh
steering rams within the range 130cc to 230cc.
A rudder reference transducer must be used on all installations with a
hydraulic steering system. Hydraulic slip across the helm pump producei
significant lost motion which will impair sleering performance if used
without a rudder reference.

The ST5000 can be calibraled to suit each installation giving maximum
performance with many types of boats and steering systems.

Safety
Passage rnaking 11nder autopilot can greatly increase the pleasure of the
voyage and cnsurc lhc crcw can relax. Howcver, this can lead to a
tlangerous lack of allcntion to basic scarnanship. The following rules
should always be observcd:-
• Maintain a pcrrnanent watch and check regularly all round for other
ves seis ami obslacles to navigalions. No matter how clear the sea may
appcilr il dilngcr ous situalion can develop rapidly
• Maintain an acrnralc record of the vessel's position eilher by use of a
radio navigalion reccivr.r or visual bearings.
• Maintarn a w11tinr1()l/S plot of posilion on a curren! charf. Ensure !he
locked aufoprlot heading steers you clear of all obslacles. Make praper

1.1 Basic principies
When switched on, the ST5000 will be in 'Standby' mode. To select
aulomatic steering simply steady the vessel on the required heading
and push Auto. At any time to return to manual steering push Standby.

Autopilot control has been simplified to a set of pushbutton operations, all
of which are confirmed with a 'beep' tone. In addition to the main single key
functions there are several dual key press functions. Course changes can
be made at any time using the -1, +1, -10, and +10 degree keys.
Passage making under automatic pilot is a very pleasant
experience which can lead to the temptation of relaxing
permanent watch. This must always be avoided no matter how
clear the sea may appear to be.
Remember, a large ship can travel two miles in five minutes -just
the time it takes to make a cup of coffee.
The next few pages list ali of the pushbutton operations needed for full
autopilot control.

'Automatic deadband' (Auto seaslale) will cause lhe pilot lo gradually
neglecl repetitive movemenls of lhe vessel and only respond lo true
variations in course. This provides lhe best compromise belween power
consumplion and course keeping accuracy by neglecting unnecessary
rudder movements.
'Minimum deadband' will always provide lhe tightesl course keeping
possible but at lhe expense of increased power consumption and drive
unil aclivily.

1.3 Operating hints
lt is very importan! lo undersland the effecl of sudden trim changes on
steering performance. When a sudden trim change occurs, due for
example to weather helm lhere will be a delay before !he automatic lrim
applies rudder to restore !he locked heading. This correction can lake up
to one minute. Large course changes which change !he apparenl wind
direction can produce large trim changes. In these cases !he aulopilot will
nol immedialely assume !he new automalic heading, and will only settle
onto course when lhe automatic Trim has been fully established.

Tidal Stream Compensation
A check should be made to verify it is safe to turn onto the new track and
then the +10 and-10 degree keys pressed together. This will cancel the
waypoint arrival alarm and steer the boat towards the next waypoint.
Unless the Waypoint Advance' is accepted in the above way the alarnt will
conlinue to sound and the current course be maintained.

Under most conditions T rack Control' will hold the selected track to wilhin
±0.05nrn (30011) or beller.
The autopilot takes account of vessel speed when computing course
changes to ensure oplirnurn performance overa wide range of vessel

Low Speed Operation
Waypoint Advance
lf your navigation receiver lransmils valid Waypoinl Number' alid 'Bearing
to Waypoint' NMEA headers it is possible to advance from one waypoint to
the next by simply pressing the -10 and +10 degree keys together.
As the vessel passes the target waypoint the navigation receiver should
select, rnanually or aulornalically, the next target aypoint. The ST5?<JO
w1II delect the new larget waypo1nl nurnber and display !he new beanng to { ...
'waypoinl and also the direction it will turn to acquire it. This will be
accompanied by an alarrn to indicate waypoint arrival (see page 25).
Note:While the waypoint advance alarm is sounding, 'Track Control' is
suspended and the S15000 will rnaintain the curren! boat heading.
Although there is no need to fully understand the details of the track
keeping algorithm, it is very important to understand its limitations so as to
obtain the best performance from 'Track Control'. The most significan! of
these limitations is imposed if NMEA O180 cross track error data is
transmitted by the radio navigation receiver. This data is restricted to
±0.30nm, which means that even if the vessel were 5 miles to starboard
of track, the transmitted data would still be 0.30nm.
Atlempts to engage 'Track Control' beyond the 0.30nm limit will lead to
excessive overshoots and can result in the vessel circling. For this reason
the alarm code is displayed (see page 25) whenever the cross track error
exceeds 0.30nm The requirement to remain within 0.30nm of !rack also
limits the maximum allowable angular error between lhe !rack course and
the vessel's heading. lf the angular error is loo great, the 'Track Control'
will be unable to cancel it within the 0.30nm limit leading to the problems
oullined above.
The NMEA 0183 formal transmits cross track error data up to 99.99nm
and enables the 'Track Control' to operate with larger cross track
errors.However, the alarm code will still be displayed over 0.30nm in case
there are navigational hazards clase to the intended track.

Operation of the manual acquisition of 'Track Control' al low speeds
requires additional care as the effect of tidal streams is far more signif
cant than al higher speeds. In general terms, providing the tidal How is less
than 35% of the vessel speed no noticeable difference will occur in the
performance of 'Track Control'. However, extra care should be laken to
ensure that the vessel is as clase as possible to track, and thal the
direction made good over the ground is as close as possible lo the
direction of the next waypoint, befare engaging 'Track Control'. Under
these circumstances positive positional checks al regular intervals are
vital especially if navigational hazards are clase.

The ST5000 can be adjusted to meet the characterislics of your vessel
and steering system.
The calibration routine allows the following parameters to be adjusted
from their factory de-fault settings.
• Rudder gain (Value on power up)
• Rudder offset adjustment

• Rate of turn limit
• Off course alarm limit
• Automatic Trim adjustment delay
• Northerly/Southerly turning error compensation
The autopilot also requires certain other information:
• Average cruise speed
• Type of steering system
• Local variation
This section will look at each feature in-turn and explain how to fine tune it
to suit your particular boal.

The ST5000 requires ils own 12V d.c. dedicated power supply as it
cannot source power from the Sea Talk bus. A fused 2m (6.5ft) power lead
is supplied for this purpose and is terminated with 1/4 in spade
connectors. On no account should the Control head be used without
the supplied fuse. This is quick blow and designed to protect the control
head if !he supply is reverse connecled. lf preferred a separale circuit
breaker can be fitted, in addilion lo !he fuse, to allow !he pilot to be
switched on from the main distribulion panel.

1\11 cleclrical connections to the S f5000 are rnade vía spade connectors
un !he rear case. When installing each spade connector rnake sure !he
connector fits securely ovcr !he blade and no! between the connector and
its plastic insulating boot. 1his will give an intermittent conneclion and

Once the fluxgate has been positioned !he cable should be led back to the
control head. The cable has five taíls each of which is fitted wilh a spade
connecler. These should be connected colour for colour to the 'Compass'
seclion at the rear of the unit as shown below:

11is very importan! lo ensure thal the fluxgate is positioned at least 0.8m
(2.5rt) away from the vessel's steering compass in order to avoid devialion
of both compasses. lhe fluxgale must also be positioned as far away as
possible from large iron rnasses, such as !he engine and other magnetic
devices which may cause devialion and reduce the sensitivity of the
sensor. Ir any doubl exis! s over magnetic suitability of !he chosen site, the
position rnay be surveyed using a simple hand bearing compass. The hand
bearing cornpass shuuld be íixed in !he chosen position and the vessel
swung through 3GO º . Helalive diííerences in reading between the hand
bearing compass and lhe vessel's main steering compass should ideally
no! exceed 20 º on any heading.
5.3 Rudder Reference Transducer
A rudder relerence transducer must be used on all installations with a
hydraulic steering system.

The rudder relerence unit must be mounted on a suitable base adjacent to
the rudder stock using the sell tapping screws provided. The base height
must ensure correct vertical alignment oí the rudder relerence unit arm
and tiller arm. lf il is more convenient, the rudder relerence unit may be
mounted upside down (logo downwards), but il this is done, the red and
green wires from.the transducer must be reversed on the rear of the
Control head.

The rudder reference unil has a built in spring to rernove any free play in
lhe linkage to lhe liller. l his gives very precise rudder position.
1he rudder reference ar rn rnovement is limited to± 60°. Care must be
taken during installation lo ensure the rudder reference arm is opposite

lt is importan! to ensure that lhe dimensions set out below are within the
limils set and lhe liller arm and rudder reference arm are parallel to each
olher
Wilh the rudder arnidships,lhe rudder reference arm should be opposite
lhe cable enlry and at 90º to the connecting bar. Minar adjustment can be
made by slackening off the 3 securing screws and rotating the transducer
body.
The tiller pin must be positioned within the limits shown. ldeally dimension
'A' should be 140mm (5.5in). However, changing this wilhin the limils
shown will no! degrade the autopilol performance but will slightly alter the
scaling of the rudder angle display. The tiller pin is secured to the tiller arrn
using the self tapping screws provided.
Cut the studding to length and screw on the lock nuts and ball pin sockets.
The sockets can then be pressed onto the pins. Move the rudder frorn side
lo side to ensure the linkage is free from any obstruclion al ali rudder
angles.

Types of steering system
There are three basic types of hydraulic steering system:
5 .4 Hydraulic pump installation
lntroduction
The hydraulic drive unit shuuld be mounted in a horizontal position clear of
spray and lhe possibility uf immersion in water. ll shuuld be localed as
near as possiblc lo !he hydr aulic sleering cylinder. lt is importan! to bol!
lhe hydraulic drive unil sPc111ely lo a substantial rnember to avoid any
possibilily of vibration thal could darnage !he inler-connecting pipework.
lf thcre are no stop valves in !he existing steering syslem then extreme
car e should be laken lo avoid loosing excessive hydraulic fluid. lf !he
syslern is pressurised lhen !he pressure should be released al the
reservoir in accordance with !he manufacturers. i11structions before
breaking into the systern.
011 non pressurised systems il solid plug should be temporarily fitted to
lhe upper helm reservoir venl. fhis will rninimise fluid loss during
installalion
ll is essenlial to keep !he steering syslern free of any dirt as the valves in
both the manual helm pump and !he autopilot purnp will stick if they
encounler any foreign material in !he hydraulic fluid.

In ali cases it is strongly recornmended that the steering gear
rnanulacturer be consulted.
AII hoses used to fil the pump should match or exceed the specification of
!hose used in the existing steering system.
ll is also necessary to ensure lhat the helm pump is filted with reversihg
check valves otherwise the aulopilot pump will drive the helm pump in
preference to moving the ram. Single helm pump systems withoul check
valves should incorporate a Z068 double pilot check valve block. This is
filted as shown below.
AII lee pieces used in lhe inslallation should be fitted in accordance with
!he rnanufaclurers inslructions.
Cabling
Do no! use teflon tape on any fitlings. lf sealing is required use a
proprielary liquicl pipe thread sealer. This should be applied sparingly well
back from the end ol lhe litling lo preven! sleering system conlarninalion.
The hydraulic pump connecls to the 'DRNE' connections on the back of the
control head. 11is rnost irnporlant that the size of cable used is adequate.

Corree! bleeding of lhe hydraulic syslem is one of the most importan!
steps in installing a hydraulic pump. The presence of air in lhe hydraulic
steering system will not only degrade the performance of the aulopilol t
also the overall operalion of the steering syslem.
In addilion lo the manufacturers inslructions for bleeding the steering
system the following procedure should also be followed lo bleed the
autopilot pump:
Press the-10 degree key and hold down
The autopilot pump will try to drive the rudder over to port.
Counter this rudder movement by turning the helm to starboard to keep
the rudder stationary.
This aclion will cause any air in lhe pump lo rise lo lhe helm pump and
exhaust into lhe reservoir.
Reverse this aclion to clear any air on the other side of the pump as
follows:
Press lhe + 1O degree key and hold down
The autopilot will now try lo drive the rudder lo starboard. Again counter
lhe rudder movemenl, lhis time by turning the helm to port.
Note: Monitor the reservoir tank at all times - topping up with the
manufacturers recornrnended fluid as required.
lf air is left ln the systern the steering will feel spongy particularly when the
wheel is rotated to the hardover posilion.

Having inslaHed your ST5000 wheel autopilot, switch on the main power
breaker.
The control head should beep and display STSOOO. Within 2 seconds a
compass heading preceded by a flashing 'C' should be displayed e.g.
'C' 234. This shows the control head is active. lf the head does not beep
please refer to chapler 1 0 - 'Fault finding'.

lf the illumination does not switch on lhen a cabling fault exists in the
SeaTalk cabling between the ST5000 control head and !he instruments/
autopilot control unit.

This procedurc will only take a minute or so and lull details are given in

The display will then show eilher port or starboard and the phase of the
aulopilot will autornalically change.

Chapter 8: Accessories
Various accessories are available for your ST5000 autopilot. These
include:
• l landheld remole control (Z 1O1)

The SeaTalk Interface will convert aD Sea Talk data to NMEA O183. This
allows you to feed NMEA O183 Navigation data lo a plotter or Speed and
Compass NMEA information back lo a position transducer for dead
reckoning (Assuming the correct instruments are present on the Sea Talk
bus to generate the information initially).

The handheld remole is supplied wilh 6m (20ft) oí cable and a waterproof
plug and socket. 11allows you remole access to !he four autopilot course
change buttons

Control head
Ali Autohelm products are subject to a comprehensive test procedure
prior to packing and shipment. In the unlikely event lhat a fault does arise
the following check lis! should help cure the problem.
• In cerlain condilions, condensa!ion may appear on !he window. This will
no! harm !he unit, and can be cleared by switching on the illumination
• Never use any chemical or abrasive materials lo clean your ST5000. lf
!he Control head becornes dirty wipe clean wilh a damp clolh
