THE ENGLISH VOCABULARY AS THE OBJECT OF
RESEARCH
Key words: lexicology, word, vocabulary, dictionary, naming (verbalization,
lexicalization), motivation, folk etymology, onomatopoeia, linguistic sign.
Problems for discussion:
1. Lexicology: a myth or reality. The object of lexicology. The problems of
lexicology. The ties of lexicology with other linguistic sciences. Lexicology
and Grammar.
2. Synchronic/diachronic approaches to the study of the language.
3. The definition of the word. External and internal structure of the word. The
main characteristics of the word. Studying words syntagmatically and
paradigmatically.
4. Naming processes: causes, ways, types and results.
5. Motivation of the lexical units.
