PHYSICAL ACTIVITY TOWARDS HEALTH AND FITNESS PHYSICAL EDUCATION comes from the Latin word “Physica”, meaning physics and “educatio” meaning the training of the bodily organs and power with a view of the promotion hearts and vigor. “men sana in corpore sano” a healthy mind in a healthy body To have a sound body, one must have a sound ; thus being in a state of mental health. The WHO defines health as a state of complete physical, mental, social wellness, not merely the absense of disease or infirminity. PE is an integral part of the general education which aims to develop the physical, social, emotional, spiritual, and mental traits of man through the physical activities. LEGAL BASIS OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION -Article XIV, section 19, 1987 Constitution of the Republic of the Philippines states that, “the State shall promote PE and encourage sports programs, league competitions and competition to foster self-discipline, amateur sports including training for International teamwork, and excellence for the development of a healthy and alert citizenry.” Physical Fitness Components: A. Skills-Related Components • AGILITY the ability to change direction quickly • BALANCE the ability to remain stable even moving • COORDINATION the ability to use vision, touch and muscle sense. • POWER simple defined as the ability to release the maximum strength. • REACTION TIME the amount of time it takes to make a physical response once you see the need to take an action. • SPEED the rate at which one covers distance in a short period of time. B. Health-related Components • CARDIOVASCULAR FITNESS -”cardio” which means heart, the ability to exercise at an elevated heart rate for a designated time while supplying adequate oxygen to the body. • FLEXIBILITY the ability to move joint with ease through the normal range of motion and muscles to their fullest extent • ENDURANCE -the ability to exercise without tiring in a long period of time. • STRENGTH -the ability to exert force against resistance in a short period of time. • BODY COMPOSITION -ideally, a state in which body fat does not exceed 25 percent of the total body composition THANK YOU FOR LISTENING!
