NARRATIVE REPORT
(February 21, 2020)
Gaston Elementary School conducted its eighth Learning Action Cell (LAC)
session last February 21, 2020 at exactly three o’clock in the afternoon. Mrs. Miraflor
C. Espaňo was the speaker of the said session. Her task was to talk about the SchoolBased Management (SBM).
The objective of the session was to increase the autonomy of the critical
stakeholders through improving the instructional process and student outcomes. The
speaker gave a task to the participants wherein they have to differentiate between a
boss and a leader. After which, she discussed about School-based Management and
its composition, committees and functions as well as the different principles, which
include the following: Principle 1- Leadership and Governance, Principle 2- Curriculum
and Instruction, Principle 3- Accountability and Continuous Improvement, and
Principle 4- Management of Resources. Handouts on SBM Observation Tool as well
checklist of the artifacts needed in each principle were distributed to the chairperson
and members of each principle. Then, each committee identify their best practices
under their respective principle and the challenges they encounter. Some of the Best
Practices mentioned were School Based Feeding Program, Home Visitation, One on
One Tutoring, and Intensive Monitoring. While some of the challenges were minimal
participation of the parents during school activities, high rate of frustration level
readers, and limited computers for children. , they have agreed to focus on
strengthening the existing reading program of the school and to increase community
linkages and involvement of stakeholders.
The session ended with a closing prayer leaded by Mrs. Mailyn D. Cabunoc
at exactly five o’clock in the afternoon.

NARRATIVE REPORT
(July 19,2020)
Gaston Elementary School opened its first Learning Action Cell (LAC) session
on July 19, 2019 at exactly three o’clock in the afternoon. Mrs. Cherimen A. Padrigao
was the speaker of the said session. Her topic was about Conducting Philippine
Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI).
She started with presenting the meaning of Phil-IRI, who needs to take the PhilIRI, when should it be administered, and who can administer the Phil-IRI. Group
Screening Test, recommended Font Size to be used in the passages, Phil-IRI Graded
Passaged were discussed. She emphasized that the Phil-IRI Oral Reading Test is
administered in order to identify the pupil’s miscues in oral reading, record the number
of words that the pupils read per minute, find out how well a student understands the
passage read. While the Phil-IRI Listening Comprehension is administered when the
pupil is identified as a nonreader and the Phil-IRI Silent Reading Test may be
administered after the Oral Reading Test is conducted to further check the student’s
comprehension skill. She also explained about the four stages on administering the
Phil-IRI which are as follows: Stage 1: Initial Screening Using the Phil-IRI Group
Screening Test Stage 2: Administration of the Phil-IRI Graded Passages (Pre-test)
Stage 3: Provision of Specialized Instruction/Intervention Stage 4: Administration of
the Phil-IRI Graded Passages (Post Test). The speaker then distributed sample forms
needed for the administration of Phil-IRI Graded Passages, sample passages,
Marking and Scoring the Oral Reading Miscues handouts and guides how to compute
word reading , reading comprehension and interpretation of the pupils reading profile
per passage. Then, she gave a task to the participants to do a simulation how to
conduct the Phil-IRI. Each group participated well in the said activity.
The session ended with a closing prayer leaded by Ms. Glene P. Galaring at
five o’clock in the afternoon.

(January 10, 2020)
Gaston Elementary School conducted its fifth Learning Action Cell (LAC) session
last January 10, 2020 at exactly three o’clock in the afternoon. Ms. Glene P. Galaring
was the speaker of the said session. Her topic was about Absenteeismn.
She started the session by presenting the objectives of her topic, which are 1.to
examine the personal causes that give rise to absenteeism, 2. To bring out the factors,
which affect the working atmosphere of the employees that drives them to
absenteeism, 3. To find out the possible ways to reduce the rate of absenteeism.
School absenteeism is an alarming problem for administrators, teachers,
parents, society in general, and pupils and particular. Unaccepted absences have a
negative effect on peer relationship. (Malcolm, Wilson , Davidson, Kirk 2003). Then,
the speaker named the most common causes of absenteeism. Few of them are socioeconomic status, pupils have to stay home and take care of siblings, indiscipline, and
“Friday mentality” and teacher approach. Afterwards, she stressed that absenteeism
will lead to poor academic performance of the pupil. Aside from the pupils’
absenteeism, she also tackled about factors influencing employee’s absenteeism.
Some of the factors include health problems, stress, job satisfaction, and leadership
styles. After, she discussed about Frequent Unauthorized Absences (Habitual
Absenteeism), Tardiness and Loafing and its Sanctions which include Suspension of
Siz (6) months and one (1) day to one (1) year for the first offense and dismissal for
the second offense under CSC Memorandum Circular 1,s.2017. Last part of her topic
was about possible ways to reduce the rate of absenteeism. Suggested ways to
reduce the rate of absenteeism were Reward Good Attendance, Identify the reason of
absences and intervene early, Attendance Monitoring, and School-based counseling
structure.
The session ended with a closing prayer leaded by Mr. Neil C. Eblamo at five
o’clock in the afternoon.

(January 24, 2020)
Gaston Elementary School conducted its sixth Learning Action Cell (LAC)
session last January 24,2020 at exactly three o’clock in the afternoon. Mrs. Mailyn D.
Cabunoc was the speaker of the said session. Her topic was about Wash in Schools
Program, Good Grooming and Personal Hygiene.
She started the session by presenting the objectives of her topic, which are: to
know the Wash in School Program and identify necessary personal hygiene habits
and good grooming habits.
She then discussed the Policy and Guidelines for the Comprehensive Water,
Sanitation and Hygiene in Schools (WINS) Program highlighting the following: Basic
Requirement and Standard, Role of the DepEd partners, R.A. No. 9003 “Proper
Segregation and disposal of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste material”,
handwashing facilities.
She discussed the seven essential elements of WINS which are water,
sanitation, daily group handwashing with soap, operation and maintenance, menstrual
hygiene, behavior changes activities, and capacity building. After that, the Five Key
Benefits of the Wash in School were being presented which include 1. Healthy and
Protecting school environment minimizing risk and disease, abuse and exclusion, 2.
Brings pride and commitment among children by enabling them to become agents of
change,3. Investment in the health and well-being of future generations, 4. Promotes
gender equity leading to higher girls’ school attendance and retention and lastly,
Discourages habit of defecation in open and encourages children to insist their family
members for a toilet in their homes. She then demonstrates the proper hand washing
and let the participants perform it. Lastly, the participants were tasked to identify the
problem of the school in the implementation of the Wash in Schools Program.
The session ended with a quote “Water and Sanitation has not had the same
kind of champion that global health, and even education have had.

Topic:
Remedial reading -It is a change in instruction that helps remedy a weakness
in the field of reading.
-Refers to correcting or improving reading skills
Objectives:
-Reduce the number of students who have difficulty in
learning to read and write.
-Tutoring struggling reading in both individualized and small
group setting.
Gaston Elementary School conducted Learning Action Cell (LAC) session on
remedial reading. In the opening, the facilitator gives preview on the topic to be tackled
in the whole session.
As the session goes on, the facilitator introduced and discussed some strategies
that could be helpful for teachers in teaching students with difficulty in learning reading
and writing skills. The facilitator discussed two types of strategies namely: The Phonics
Method and The Whole Word Method.
1.Phonic Method- Deals with letter names, requires memorization of letter
names.
2. Whole Word Method -It is a letter to sound correspondence method.
Reading Strategies for struggling readers:
1.Decoding Strategies – Involves teaching the child phonemic awareness
2.Comprehension Strategies – Understanding something
The session with full of excitement and eagerness to apply the new knowledge
and strategies we learn from this session.
