I think that the major turning points to the widespread interest in popular world music started to turn when people from other countries such as Africa and Cuba began to bring over traditional styles of music that inspired a new generation of music from what Europeans had and brought to America. 2. Where does the name Ladysmith Black Mambazo come from? Shabalala choose the name specifically because Ladysmith was the name of the village he grew up in, black represented the black oxen which was the strongest on the farm, and Mambazo was from the Zulu word for “axe”. 3. What is Kwaito? Kwaito is a mixture of different styles of popular music usually a combination of South African musical styles with the fast beats and electronic sounds from house music. It also has combinations of hip hop, r & b, reggae, and jazz. PowerPoint “South Africa” 4. What effect did the discovery of Gold and Diamonds have on the South African people? The mining of diamonds and the discovery of gold started in the mid 19th century which caused the influx of Europeans to jump tremendously. Large Dutch and English settlements were created which became the reason for why whites were in the majority in those areas. People were put into mining camps where they could hold jobs, live, and educate. There was a prohibition against race mixing and only whites were allowed in government. 5. Who was Brenda Fassie? Brenda Fassie was a female artist, also known as the Queen of African Pop. She adopted the popular genre of Pop music when it first gained major attention in the 1990’s. She would use her music to tell stories of the hardships of Africans in their townships during the Apartheid system. She sang without censorship if that meant having songs relating to her own life or the struggling lives of others she experienced.
