Introduction Maxine and Henry had been playing at their friend's house for hours. It was time to walk home. Maxine grabbed Henry's hand while discussing her drawings and the adventures in her imagination. He listens quietly but his face conveys a different story. He is enraptured by her tales. They arrive at home and Henry comments that the door is already open. "Mom probably just knew when we were coming home!" Maxine responded to Henry's comment with excitement. Maxine runs inside first and immediately stops in her tracks. Both her mother and father were laying still propped up by the wall. Blood pooled on the carpet under their bodies. Her parents were still holding hands. If not for the blood and the fear frozen on their faces, it would have been considered romantic. Maxine blocks Henry from the scene as soon as he enters the house. "We need to leave now, Henry!" She shouted. “The person who did this could still be inside the house,” Maxine thought. She snatched her little brother up and dashed out of the home, horrified by what she discovered. She failed to check whether her parents were still warm because of how fast she ran out the door. They stayed at a friend's house. After they enter the living room, Maxine's adrenaline wears off. She stood there processing what just happened, while her little brother guided her to the guest bedroom. For many days she barely responded to anything, including her own brother. Maxine basically shut down for a while. Her friend's mother eventually contacted the mobian police force after they refused to return home. The officer described the gruesome discovery of Maxine and Henry's parents. The officer failed to find any witnesses; the trail went cold. When Maxine recovered enough to talk, she could no longer recall the double murder. Maxine thought her parents were not home and that is why she went back to her friend's house. She discovered some details later on in her teenage years. Though she cannot recall what happened, the nightmares haunt her most nights. She vows to solve the murder no matter what. Henry vowed to support her as the only remaining member of the family. Because of this, Maxine became a more serious person and fiercely protective of Henry. After a while, they moved to Station Square to try to create a detective agency and discover who murdered their parents.
