Introduction
The significance of cleanliness and hygiene cannot be overlooked by any society. In fact, it is one
of the key factors by which society can be judged that how much civilized it is. Islam also places
great emphasis on cleanliness. cleanliness is termed an indispensable fundamental of faith.
There are many verses in the Holy Quran which reflect the importance of cleanliness. For
َ َ K ‫َ َ ُ ﱡ‬S ۡ ‫ َ ُ ﱡ ﱠ ﱠ‬Z ‫ﱠ‬
example, Allah says: (‫ َﻦ‬Bۡ DC ‫ﺐ اﻟ ُﻤﺘﻄ ﱢﻬ‬
‫ ِﺤ‬B‫ و‬UT ‫ ِﺤﺐ اﻟﺘﻮ ِاﺑ‬Y [‫“ ِ)ان ا‬Truly, Allah loves those who turn to Him
constantly and He loves those who keep themselves pure and clean” (2:222) Furthermore, in one

of his sayings the Holy Prophet (PBUH) said: (‫ﺎن‬
ِ ‫ﻤ‬Y‫“ )اﻟﻄﻬﻮر ﺷﻄﺮ ِاﻹ‬cleanliness is part of faith” (Sahih
Muslim:223)
It is essential to provide education about cleanliness in order to train the younger generations of
a society. Therefore, READ Foundation wants to promote cleanliness culture in its schools. For
this, all the educational institutions of READ Foundation will demonstrate cleanliness in their
premises. To achieve the target, this document is being development by the READ Foundation as
a guideline for all its schools. This handbook is intended to provide all the policies and procedures
to keep and maintain cleanliness of the schools and the students.
Purpose & Scope:
The aim of this document is to create and maintained “eye-catching and learning” environment
in READ Foundation schools. Eye-catching means that the building of schools and its premises
are neat, clean and pleasant to watch. Learning means that the school premises empowers the
teacher to teach and the students to learn. The aim of this document is also “to promote
cleanliness culture” among the staff and the students. The purpose of this document is to outline
policies and procedures for keeping school environment neat and clean. Neat and tidy setting
presents the school in a manner which reflects a well-run, high quality facility to all students,
visitors, faculty and staff. This document is to standardize tidiness measures and provide clear
expectations for cleanliness at the schools. As maintaining cleanliness is a continual effort, so this
document will give proper guidelines to the management of the school about how to manage
the routine tasks and maintained them all the time.

The scope of this document is extended to all the schools and colleges of READ Foundation.
Responsibilities
DME/AME:

Provision and orientation of the document (School Cleanliness: Policies & Procedures) to
principal and ensuring its implementation in the schools.
Principal:

Provision and orientation of the document to admin/School Cleanliness Supervisor (SCS),
staff and the students.

Periodic formal and informal inspection of the campus to ensure compliance of the
policies.
Admin officer/School Cleanliness Supervisor (SCS):

Implementation of policies & procedures provided by principal to keep school neat and
clean.

Ensuring that all the building and premises of the school are maintained in a clean and
tidy manner
Staff:

Keeping their immediate work area and classrooms neat and clean.

Informing the admin/School Cleanliness Supervisor in case of any trash/debris is in the
campus.
Students:

Keeping their desks/chairs and classroom clean and tidy. Using dustbin while disposing
wrapper/trash/pencil sharps etc.

Informing the concern teacher in case of any trash/debris/wrappers in the class/ground
or around the campus

This document would be more helpful if it is read and implemented in conjunction with
“Guidelines for care/maintenance/housekeeping of READ Foundation Buildings” provided by
DoC.
Overview of major components of school cleanliness
(In context of READ Foundation)
Physical environment of the school may comprise of following components

Signboard of the school will be well looked-after, having no unwanted poster/writing or
banner etc

Boundary walls of the schools will be properly maintained, neat and clean. Any writing,
wall chalking, painting, Pena flexes and other displays will be eye-catching and error free.

Unnecessary/unwanted banner/posters/flexes will be removed from boundary walls
immediately.

School ground will be free from hazardous objects.

Opening spaces of the schools will be orderly maintained.

Walking tracks will be properly set and upheld.

Flower beds/gardens will be properly trimmed and maintained.

There will be no wrapper/paper in the school premises.
Procedures for keeping and maintaining cleanliness of external premises of the school
Principal of the school will nominate and delegate the responsibilities regarding cleanliness of
the school, to any staff member preferably admin of the school. Principal will give proper
orientation to the nominated staff member about the tasks. Admin/responsible person will carry
out all the activities with the help of support staff, teachers and the students.

Procedures for keeping and maintaining cleanliness of internal premises of the school
School admin/School Cleanliness Supervisor will take help of class teachers, support staff,
proctors/monitors by delegating different responsibilities in order to keep school neat and clean.
Class teachers along with proctors/monitors will ensure cleanliness of classrooms, lab/s, library
and play ground by guiding students and staff to dispose of trash, wrappers and extra papers
properly (in the dustbins). Support staff will help admin/School Cleanliness Supervisor to keep
office/s, staff room, admin room, corridors, verandas and open areas clean.

water, soap etc

There will be no trash, wrappers or papers anywhere in the washroom area.
Procedures for keeping and maintaining Hygiene and sanitation facilities
School administration will ensure pure and healthy drinking water for all the students and staff
in the school. School administration, with the help of READ Foundation HO, will conduct water
testing to ensure that it’s safe and healthy to drink. School admin/School Cleanliness Supervisor
will also ensure that water sources like water tanks, water dispensers or water coolers are neat
and clean.

Policies for Students’ hygiene

Students’ dress (uniform, sweater/coat, cap, chadar/scarf, shoes) will be neat and clean.

Physical appearance (body/face, haircut/comb, nail, teeth etc) of the students will be tidy.

Students’ belongings (bag, pencil box, lunch box etc.) will be neat & clean.

Procedures
Principal will give detail orientation to the teachers regarding different aspects of physical
hygiene of the students. Checklist related to the students’ cleanliness will be shared with the
teachers (see checklist in annexure 3). Teachers will motivate and guide the students about their
hygiene and tidiness. Teachers will check the students’ cleanliness on daily basis.

General Guidelines
Following are general guidelines to keep the school neat and clean:

School admin/ SCS will take round of the campus on daily basis to check cleanliness of the
campus.

School principal will take round of the campus at least once a week.

Principal and staff will regularly guide and motivate the students to keep the surrounding
neat and clean (Quranic verses, Hadith and quotes of famous people can be used as
reference).

Different displays on flexes like drinking water procedure, using dustbins and how to use
washroom properly will be displayed in relevant places of the school to educate the
students.


After each informal or formal inspection visit principal will give feedback to the admin/SCS
and will make an action plan to take corrective measures.

Principal with some staff members will conduct detail annual inspection of the campus to
ensure cleanliness. (See format for inspection in the annexure 1)

Arrange annual classroom decoration competition among different classes to make
physical environment of the school more attractive. In the same way open
spaces/ground/flower beds can divided among student-groups/classes to keep them tidy
and decorate to make them eye-catching. Best class/group can be awarded with
trophy/certificate/cash. (This will be an optional activity)

School administration will try to inculcate these three habits in staff and the students;
o Put things on their respective places after using, “there is a place for everything
and its should be in its place”.
o Use dustbin whenever you have something to dispose in your hand.
o Whenever you see wrapper/paper or trash in the ground immediately put it in
dustbin.
