You can purchase the etext along with a MyAccountingLab access code directly through Pearson at this link. Please refer to the separate file posted on eLC for instructions on how to register and access MyAccountingLab. The course ID is farmer22814. If you’re not able to access MAL, typically, one of four things is happening: 1. Something is wrong with the browser you’re using. Switch browsers. 2. Your computer is “blocking cookies” from the MAL site. Allow cookies. 3. MAL is experiencing high volume traffic. Try back later. 4. The site is down due to scheduled maintenance or technical problems on Pearson’s end. Try back later. Should you require assistance with MAL at any time during the semester, please contact Pearson's support team before emailing me. You will also need access to a cell phone during class for Kahoot! attendance checks and low stakes in class quizzes to be discussed in more detail later in the syllabus. I would recommend downloading the Kahoot! app to your phone. Study Suggestions and Student Responsibilities This course will require a significant time commitment to avoid “falling behind.” I would suggest developing a weekly schedule for the course. I will post suggested schedules at the beginning of each week to eLC, but you have to find a schedule that works for you. In general, here are my suggestions for being successful in the class: Before we cover a chapter, skim/read the chapter (textbook or slides) and/or lecture document on eLC. Complete the reading quiz in MAL. Watch the intro video posted to eLC. During the week we’re covering a chapter, stay on top of the lectures. I would recommend printing the blank slides for each chapter and either taking notes on slides or on notebook paper. Writing keeps you more “active” during lecture. Computers will not be allowed to be out during in person lectures unless you have a documented disability. I would also recommend using an actual calculator rather than the calculator on your phone or computer to minimize the unearthly pull those devices sometimes have on us. After each class, rewrite your notes and rework any problems that we complete in class. If you need a “refresher” on any in class calculations, watch the prerecorded videos posted to eLC. After we finish covering a chapter, do the following: 1. Complete the optional textbook practice in MAL. (this is not for a grade but is for practice purposes only) 2. Work all extra practice problems posted on eLC. Each chapter beginning with Chapter 2 has two types of practice problems. a. Multiple choice practice with written/typed solutions. b. Longer short answer practice problems with written/typed and video solutions. fall 2021 ACCT2102 3 Before each comprehension quiz, rework class problems and additional practice problems. For the final exam, rework all comprehension quizzes. Rework practice problems and focus on the questions you missed/struggled with on the comprehension quizzes. Throughout the semester, come to my office hours and/or the accounting lab. These are learning resources for you!! Make use of them. College education prepares you for a professional career. The following professional behavior standards will be expected of you at all times: You are expected to arrive on time for class and stay the entire class period. I understand that there are situations where you may need to leave class early. If you are aware that you will need to leave class early, please be respectful and let me know before class begins so that your exit is not a distraction. While in class, you are expected to give the lecture your complete attention (no naps or side conversations). Computers are not allowed to be used during class. If you have your computer out during class, you will be asked to put it away. You can use a digital writing tablet (such as a iPad) with a smart pen to take notes. You are allowed to have your cell phone within reach during class for Kahoot! use only. Your cell phone should not be out otherwise. If you have your cell phone out during class for an unauthorized reason, you will be asked to put it away. Keep your calculator out for use during class. You are not allowed to use your cell phone as a calculator. The Terry College is committed to promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging among its students, faculty, and staff. This class welcomes the open exchange of ideas and values freedom of thought and expression. This class provides a professional environment that recognizes the inherent worth of every person. It aims to foster dignity, understanding, and mutual respect among all individuals in the class. Respectful behavior towards classmates, graduate assistants, guests, and the instructor is required at all times. Violation of any of the above professional behavior standards during class may result in a student being asked to either leave class. If a major life changing event/situation occurs during the semester that prevents you from focusing on the course, it is your responsibility to inform me of the event/situation immediately. I am able to work with you during the semester to make concessions but will be unable to make changes to your final grade after they are submitted on Athena at the end of the semester. If you have a disability and would like to request classroom accommodations, please make sure to send me the appropriate email from the DRC. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please visit me during office hours. fall 2021 ACCT2102 4 Academic Honesty As a University of Georgia student, you have agreed to abide by the University’s academic honesty policy, “A Culture of Honesty,” and the Student Honor Code. All academic work must meet the standards described in “A Culture of Honesty” found at: www.uga.edu/honesty. Here is a list of expectations and standards as they relate to academic honesty in this course: For reading quizzes . . . you may use the textbook, MAL resources, and resources posted to eLC but are not allowed to use any additional outside resources, including but not limited to peers, outside parties, GroupMe, GAs in the accounting lab, and past quizzes. For comprehension quizzes . . . you may use the textbook, MAL resources, and resources posted to eLC but are not allowed to use any additional outside resources, including but not limited to peers, outside parties, GroupMe, and past quizzes. GAs in the accounting lab are available to answer questions related to MAL homework; however, they have been instructed not to complete the questions for you. For the final exam . . . you may use the textbook, MAL resources, and resources posted to eLC but are not allowed to use any additional outside resources, including but not limited to peers, outside parties, GroupMe, Chegg, GAs in the accounting lab, and past tests. For the budgeting project . . . you may use the internet, peers, parents, work associates, and other contacts; however, you are not allowed to of copy a previous student’s project and submit it as your own. Lack of knowledge of the academic policy is not a reasonable explanation for a violation. Questions related to course assignments and the academic honesty policy should be directed to the instructor. Any student suspected of using unapproved additional outside resources will be reported to the Office of the Vice President for Instruction. If you have a disability and would like to request accommodations, please make sure to send me the appropriate email from the Disability Resource Center. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please either email me. Information Related to COVID Face coverings Following guidance from the University System of Georgia, face coverings are recommended for all individuals while inside campus facilities. How can I obtain the COVID-19 vaccine? University Health Center is scheduling appointments for students through the UHC Patient Portal. Learn more here. The Georgia Department of Health, pharmacy chains and local providers also offer the COVID19 vaccine at no cost to you. To find a COVID-19 vaccination location near you, please click here. In addition, the University System of Georgia has made COVID-19 vaccines available at 15 campuses statewide and you can locate one here. fall 2021 ACCT2102 5 What do I do if I have COVID-19 symptoms? Students showing COVID-19 symptoms should self-isolate and schedule an appointment with the University Health Center by calling 706.542.1162. Monday-Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. Please DO NOT walk-in. For emergencies and after-hours care, click here. What do I do if I test positive for COVID-19? If you test positive for COVID-19 at any time, you are required to report it through the DawgCheck Test Reporting Survey. We encourage you to stay at home if you become ill or until you have excluded COVID-19 as the cause of your symptoms. UGA adheres to current Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) quarantine and isolation guidance and requires that it be followed. Follow the instructions provided to you when you report your positive test result in DawgCheck. Guidelines for COVID-19 Quarantine Period (As of 8/1/21; follow DawgCheck or see DPH website for most up-to-date recommendations) Students who are fully vaccinated do not need to quarantine upon exposure unless they have symptoms of COVID-19 themselves. All others should follow the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) recommendations: Students who are not fully vaccinated and have been directly exposed to COVID-19 but are not showing symptoms should self-quarantine for 10 days. Those quarantining for 10 days must have been symptom-free throughout the monitoring period and continue self-monitoring for COVID19 symptoms for a total of 14 days. You should report the need to quarantine on DawgCheck, and communicate directly with your faculty to coordinate your coursework while in quarantine. If you need additional help, reach out to Student Care and Outreach (sco@uga.edu) for assistance. Students, faculty and staff who have been in close contact with someone who has COVID-19 are no longer required to quarantine if they have been fully vaccinated against the disease and show no symptoms. Monitoring conditions Note that the guidance referenced in this syllabus is subject to change based on recommendations from the Georgia Department of Public Health, the University System of Georgia, or the Governor’s Office. You are responsible for checking the website regularly for announcements and any changes to our daily schedule or assignments. Discussion Boards: Three discussion boards are located on eLC: Miscellaneous and Administrative; Lectures, Reading Quizzes, and Practice; and Comprehension Quizzes. Post any question you have related to course administration, technology problems, etc. on the Miscellaneous and Administrative discussion board. If you notice a problem with any of the videos posted to eLC, please also post that here so that I can make adjustments and clarifications as needed. Post any question you have related to the material covered in the chapters on the Lectures, Reading Quizzes, and Practice discussion board. Include the chapter and question details in your post if necessary. Do not post questions related to specific problems on the comprehension quizzes; however, you can post questions about concepts and calculations taught in the lectures and practiced in any of the problems posted to eLC or the optional homework assignments in MAL. Post any question you have about comprehension quiz questions to the Comprehension Quizzes discussion board. Questions related to the comprehension quizzes are only allowed after the due date of the quiz. You should also be able to review your quiz in MAL after the due date. Include the related chapter and detailed information about the question in your post. If you have a question about a specific calculation question, please include a screenshot of the question in your post. There are different versions of the questions, so not everyone will have the exact same numbers in the calculation questions. I will check the discussion board and respond to questions within 24-48 hours. If another student posts a question that you are able to answer, you can also post a response/answer. To post a question, click on the appropriate forum posted under Discussions and then click on Compose. The discussion board should only be used to post questions and answers directly related to class material. All unrelated posts will be deleted. Instructor Office Hours and Email I will not be able to answer detailed questions related to practice problems and quizzes directly before or after class. To get help outside of class, I encourage you to attend office hours. I will hold open office hours (no appointment needed) throughout the semester. Please see the first page of the syllabus for my office hour information. You can email me questions. However, I will only respond to questions that are either administrative (i.e. when are your office hours?), concept specific (i.e. what is cost of goods manufactured?), or personal in nature (i.e. I’m sick and can’t attend class. What should I do?). I also ask that in the subject line, you type “ACCT 2102” so that I can better manage the email I receive. If you have questions about specific practice problems or problems worked in class, you will need to attend office hours. Please see the first page of the syllabus for my email address. fall 2021 ACCT2102 7 I also encourage you to attend the accounting lab throughout the semester. The accounting lab is staffed by accounting graduate students and is an additional “office hours” resource for you. Please see the first page of the syllabus for the accounting lab location and hours. Withdrawal Policy Effective Fall 2014, students who withdraw from courses before the withdrawal deadline (two weeks after the midpoint, as specified by the official calendar) will receive a grade of W. A student who wishes to withdraw from a course after the last day of the drop period for a term must withdraw through ATHENA (Online Student Information System). Withdrawals from courses will not be permitted after the withdrawal deadline except in cases of hardship as determined by the Office of Student Services. Students will not be able to withdraw from their coursework if they have an active financial or registration hold on their record. Incomplete University policy states that a grade of Incomplete (“I”) should be given only if a student is doing satisfactory work, but for nonacademic reasons beyond his/her control, was unable to meet the full requirements of the course. For an “I” to be considered, a student must have completed a majority of his/her course work. If an “I” is issued, the School of Accounting’s policy is that the student will be required to complete the assignment(s) he/she missed during the semester by the end of the following semester. If the student does not complete the missed assignment(s) by the end of the following semester, the “I” will automatically change to an “F.” A qualifying student, as determined by the instructor, who wishes to exercise this grading option, must agree to an Incomplete Policy Agreement via email. Exceptions to these policies will not be made. Class Notes Blank and completed PowerPoint slides and class solutions are posted to eLC. However, these resources should not be viewed as a substitute for class notes or class attendance. Computation of Grade Reading Quizzes Comprehension Quizzes Project Final Exam TOTAL 10% 50% 10% 30% 100% You must take and complete all assignment administered during the semester in order for the above grade calculation to apply. If you do not take and complete all assignments, you will automatically receive an F in the course. You cannot “drop” an assignment you do not complete. This means that to receive “drops,” you must complete all 11 reading quizzes and all 7 comprehension quizzes. Details about which assignments can be dropped are detailed later in the syllabus. For purposes of your final grade calculation in the class, MAL averages must be manually calculated based on the information detailed in the syllabus. The averages calculated within the systems do not reflect the above grading policies. fall 2021 ACCT2102 8 The Plus/Minus Grading System is in effect for this semester. The grading scale is as follows: A AB+ B BC+ C CD F 100.0+ 92.9̅ 89.9̅ 86.9̅ 82.9̅ 79.9̅ 76.9̅ 69.9̅ 66.9̅ 56.9̅ 93.0 90.0 87.0 83.0 80.0 77.0 70.0 67.0 57.0 0.0 Please note that because extra credit opportunities are given throughout the semester, individual assignments are not curved and final course grades are not rounded. Attendance, Quizzes, Exam, and Project A formal attendance policy is not in place this semester. To be successful in accounting, you must regularly attend class and digest information on a continual basis. You are responsible for all announcements made and information covered in class. Attendance will be randomly taken through the semester using one question “knowledge checks.” These “knowledge checks” will be for extra credit and administered through Kahoot!. “Knowledge checks” cannot be made up for any reason. Reading quizzes will be administered in MyAccountingLab. The quizzes will consist of multiple choice and true/false questions taken from material covered in the reading documents posted on eLC. You will have an unlimited amount of time to complete each quiz during the quiz’s availability period. You will be allowed 1 attempt to complete each quiz. 11 reading quizzes will be administered in MAL. One reading quiz grade will be dropped in the calculation of your final grade in the class. However, you must complete all reading quizzes for the drop to be “in effect.” You will be able to review a reading quiz after the due date. To review submitted reading quizzes in MAL, navigate to the MyAccountingLab Course Home, and then click on Results in the menu bar on the left side of the screen. Please see the assignment makeup policy outlined below. Comprehension quizzes will be administered in MyAccountingLab. The quizzes will consist of multiple choice questions and cover the material taught in the chapter(s). You will have two hours to complete each quiz assignment once you access the quiz. Comprehension quizzes are available over a two day period. There is not a specific start time; however, there is a specific end time. Please pay close attention to the schedule posted at the end of the syllabus, as well as announcements posted on eLC and availability periods within MAL. You will be allowed 2 attempts to complete each quiz. If the score on your first attempt is higher than the score on your second attempt, the score on the first attempt will count as your quiz grade for purposes of final grade calculations. If the score on your first attempt is lower than the score on your second attempt, your quiz grade for purposes of final grade calculations will be the average of your 2 attempts. 7 comprehension quizzes will be administered in MAL. 1 comprehension quiz grade will be dropped in the calculation of your final comprehension quiz average in the course. However, you must complete all comprehension quizzes for the drop to be “in effect.” You will be able to review all comprehension quiz attempts after the due date. To review submitted comprehension quizzes in fall 2021 ACCT2102 9 MAL, navigate to the MyAccountingLab Course Home, and then click on Results in the menu bar on the left side of the screen. Please see the assignment makeup policy outlined below. A final exam will be administered in MyAccountingLab. The exam will consist of multiple choice questions. The exam will cover the concepts discussed and the calculations taught in the chapters. You will have three hours to complete the exam during the exam’s availability period. Be careful! Do not access the exam until you are ready to complete it. You will only be allowed 1 attempt to on the final exam. The final exam cannot be reviewed in MyAccountingLab. You must complete the final exam. Failure to complete the final exam will result in an F in the class. Please see the assignment makeup policy outlined below Please refer to MyAccountingLab for the assignment due dates. For a full listing of all assignments, click on “Assignments” listed on the side bar of the page and choose “Show All” under Homework and Tests. To review assignments and quizzes, navigate to the MyAccountingLab Course Home, and then click on Results in the menu bar on the left side of the screen. Note that this page will not allow you to view any assignments or quizzes that you did not complete. Unsubmitted answers in MAL will result in a zero on the question. As part of your course grade, you will be asked to complete an individual budgeting project. Rather than preparing a budget for your current financial situation, you will put together a budget for your anticipated income and expenses after you graduate from college (or graduate school) and take your first job in your chosen field. Details will be discussed later in the semester. The project will be submitted via an Assignment DropBox folder on eLC. You will lose 10 points (out of a total of 50 possible points) for each day your project is late. Additional extra credit opportunities may be offered through the discussion boards on eLC. Make sure to keep a check on eLC so you do not miss the opportunities. Extra credit opportunities cannot be made up for any reason. Assignment Makeup Policy Missing any graded assignment, except in the case of reasons 1 – 4 below, will result in a score of zero. If you should miss a graded assignment due to: 1. serious illness (requiring medical care), 2. family emergency, 3. University sponsored activity, or 4. religious holiday, AND you provide appropriate documentation you will be allowed to make up the graded assignment. Job interviews, travel plans, non-University sponsored activities, forgetting, being too busy, etc. are NOT be considered acceptable excuses for missing a graded assignment. To be approved for making up a graded assignment, you must email me documentation for missing the assignment within one week from the due date of the assignment. You will not be allowed to take the graded assignment without prior approval. If you are not approved for making up a graded assignment, you will receive a zero on the assignment. You will not be allowed to make up any comprehension quiz until you have completed all reading quizzes in MAL related to chapter(s) covered. fall 2021 ACCT2102 10 Tentative Class Calendar Module 4 Chapters 6 and 7 Module 3 Chapter 5 Module 2 Chapters 3 and 4 Module 1 Chapters 1 and 2 2 Date Wednesday, 8.18 Friday, 8.20 Monday, 8.23 Wednesday, 8.25 Friday, 8.27 Monday, 8.30 Tuesday, 8.31 Wednesday, 9.1 Friday, 9.3 Monday, 9.6 Wednesday, 9.8 Friday, 9.10 Monday, 9.13 Wednesday, 9.15 Thursday, 9.16 Friday, 9.17 Monday, 9.20 Wednesday, 9.22 Friday, 9.24 Monday, 9.27 Wednesday, 9.29 Thursday, 9.30 Friday, 10.1 Monday, 10.4 Wednesday, 10.6 Friday, 10.8 Monday, 10.11 Wednesday, 10.13 Thursday, 10.14 Friday, 10.15 fall 2021 ACCT2102 Chapter Learning Objectives* Introduction LO2 Practice What You Learn** Chapter 1 S1-2 Chapter 2 LO1, LO2, LO3, S2-8, E2-27A, E2Chapter 2 LO4, LO5 28A, E2-29A, E2-30A Chapter 2 Module 1 comprehension quiz administered in MAL no class on Monday, 8.30 Chapter 3 Chapter 3 LO1, LO2, LO3, E3-21A, E3-22A, E3no class LO4, LO5 25A, E3-27A Labor Day Chapter 3 Chapter 4 LO2, LO3 S4-6, S4-9, E4-22A, Chapter 4 E4-27A, E4-28A Chapter 4 Module 2 comprehension quiz administered in MAL no class on Friday, 9.17 Chapter 5 Chapter 5 LO1, LO2, LO3, S5-1, E5-30A,E5-38A, LO5 P5-59A Chapter 5 Chapter 5 Module 3 comprehension quiz administered in MAL no class on Wednesday, 9.29 Chapter 6 LO1, LO2, LO3, S6-1, S6-4, S6-9, E6LO4, LO5 30A, E6-36A Chapter 6 Chapter 7 E7-25A, E7-26A,E730A, E7-32A, E7Chapter 7 LO1, LO2, LO3, 33A, E7-34A, E7Chapter 7 LO4, LO5 35A, E7-38A, P7Chapter 7 67A, P7-68A, P7-71A Module 4 comprehension quiz administered in MAL no class on Friday, 10.15 11 Module 5 Chapter 8 Module 6 Chapters 9 and 10 Module 7 Chapters 11 and 13 Practice What You Learn** S8-2, S8-3, S8-6, S87, S8-8, E8-21A, E8LO1, LO2, LO3, 22A, E8-24A, E8LO4, LO6 26A, E8-29A, E8Monday, 10.25 Chapter 8 30A, E8-31A Wednesday, 10.27 Module 5 comprehension quiz administered in MAL no class on Wednesday, 10.27 Thursday, 10.28 no class Friday, 10.29 Fall Break Monday, 11.1 Chapter 9 S9-9, S9-11, S9-12, LO1, LO2, LO3, S9-13, S9-15, E9-31A, LO4 E9-38A, P9-67A, P9Wednesday, 11.3 Chapter 9 69A Friday, 11.5 Chapter 10 S10-7, S10-8, S10-9, S10-12, S10-13, E10Monday, 11.8 Chapter 10 LO1, LO2, LO3, 21A, E10-22A, E10Wednesday, 11.10 Chapter 10 LO5 27A, E10-28A, P10Friday, 11.12 Chapter 10 50A, P10-51A Monday, 11.15 Module 6 comprehension quiz administered in MAL no class on Monday, 11.15 Tuesday, 11.16 Wednesday, 11.17 Chapter 11 Friday, 11.19 Chapter 11 S11-1, S11-2, S11-4, Monday, 11.22 Chapter 11 LO1, LO2, LO3, S11-5, S11-6, E11LO4 21A, E11-22A, E11no class Wednesday, 11.24 – 23A, E11-24A, P11Thanksgiving Friday, 11.26 55A Break Monday, 11.29 Chapter 11 Wednesday, 12.1 Chapter 13 LO1, LO3 S13-10, E13-22A Friday, 12.3 Chapter 13 Sunday, 12.5 module 7 comprehension quiz administered in MAL no class on Monday, 12.6 Monday, 12.6 Tuesday 12.7 Individual Budgeting Project due on eLC Friday class schedule no class on Tuesday, 12.7 FINAL EXAM date, time, and administrative details TBA Date Monday, 10.18 Wednesday, 10.20 Friday,10.22 Chapter Chapter 8 Chapter 8 Chapter 8 Learning Objectives* *The Learning Objectives correspond to the sections of the chapter in the textbook. **Questions are found in the textbook at the end of each chapter.
