Hi guys, m name is Maira and I am the tutor for Chemistry and Introductory Chemistry for the year 2019. Since most of you have very similar doubts and questions, I decided to make a document with some FAQ and advice. In case you still have some questions and/or you are having trouble with some exercises, let me know. However, I feel the need to tell you that I do not always know how to solve all the problems. Also, please, do not contact me the night before the exam, because I will not know how to help you then Good luck with your exam! Contents: 1. Past questions at the oral exam 2. The reactions 3. The essential amino acids 4. The syllabus 5. Link to the results of the written exam 6. My advice 1. PAST QUESTIONS AT THE ORAL EXAM: Markovnikov‘s rule Lactose Galactose How to derive a salt Hasselbach – Henderson equation Formation of ethers Delocalized electron in a circle coumpoun compound Cellobiose Derivation of Nernst equation Keto-enol tauterism Formation of esters Equilibrium and Keq The Gibbs equation and how does the entaply and entropy change in the equatio in different situations Structure of mannose Tryptophan Osmosis Balance a redox question Thermodynamics Carbs structure Aldol condensation pH changes due to salt hydrolysis Kps and why are some compounds more soluble than others? Balance a redox reaction Acidity in alcohols and phenols Fisher esterification 2. THE REACTIONS: 1. THE ESSENTIAL AMINO ACIDS: 4. THE SYLLABUS http://medschool.uniroma2.it/2016/05/30/chemistry-and-introductory-biochemisty/ 5. LINK TO WHERE THE RESULTS OF THE WRITTEN EXAM ARE PUBLISHED http://chimicamedica.uniroma2.it/home.php?id=2&arg=esito&idc=9 6. MY ADVICE Solve as many exercises as you can! Do not hesitate to ask prof. Marini for office hourse if you have doubts, he is very helpful and likes when students show effort. The exam consists of a few structures to draw (for example lactose, phenol, etc.) and some problems to solve: most of these problems are either cells or equilibria. However, everything can be included in these types of exercises, for example pH, salts, buffers, etc. For the carbohydrates: know both the Fischer and the ring conformation. Try the written exam even if you are not completely ready, at least you will see how it is . Do not get discouraged if you do not pass it: I passed the written one on the second try and oral on the third . YouTube is a great professor.
