GENDER AND SOCIETY: A HUMAN ECOLOGICAL APPROACH Gender and Sexuality as Social Reality Lesson Objectives: 1. Differentiate sex, gender, and sexuality; 2. Discuss the implication of these differences; 3. Contemplate about your own sexuality and on the importance of appreciating sexual diversity. Sex, Gender, and Sexuality What is sex? Refers to the physical differences between who are male, female, or intersex. A person typically has their sex assigned at birth based on physiological characteristics including their genitalia and chromosome composition. How about gender? Refers to socially constructed roles, behaviors, activities, and attributes. Gender roles may vary greatly in different societies, cultures, etc. Sexuality or Gender Identity… One important aspect of our gender is our sense of who we are: Do we see and experience ourselves as a man, a women, or neither. People may identify with genders that are different from their natal sex or with none at all. Sexual Orientation Pertains to our emotional and sexual attraction to a person. Everyone’s sexual attraction is different and deeply personal. “Diversity is the one true thing we all have in common.” -Anonymous A baby is born and is given an assigned sex based on his or her genitals. Female Male In toddler years, they are raised to be a “man” or a “women” – his or her gender – based on accepted social and cultural standards. Growing up, an individual experiences his/her gender identity on which there are cases that the persons’ biological sex does not align with one’s sexuality. Adolescence is when we discover our emotional and sexual attractions towards other people. We need to foster an inclusive environment wherein everyone feels safe as they share their sexuality. FIN.
