PERFORMANCE STANDARD: The learners should be able to: Make a multimedia presentation of a timeline of extinction of representative microorganisms, plants, and animals C. LEARNING COMPETENCY: The learners should be able to: D. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: The learners should be able to: relate species extinction to the failure of populations of organisms to adapt to abrupt changes in the environment; S9LT-Ie-f-30 II. SUBJECT MATTER a. Topic b. Reference c. Learning resources/tools III. N/A Identify the major causes of species extinction Suggest ways to reduce the rate of species extinction Discuss global and local environmental issues that contributed to species extinction Causes of extinction Science 9, Quarter 1, Module 4: Biodiversity and evolution PowerPoint presentation, Laptop, projector / smart TV Teaching and Learning procedures Setting of mood (2 minutes) Prayer Checking of attendance Reminders of the COVID – 19 protocols and the do’s and don’ts A. Engage. Decipher the code (3 minutes) The teacher will present some codes for the students to decipher. The teacher will present some clue to help them decipher the code. Processing questions: What are the words you have decode? Do you have any idea what these words mean? Linking statement: The words that you have decode are used to categorize species of animal and plants that are at risked to be extinct just like the mammoths and dinosaurs. In connection to that, for today’s session we will be talking about what are the major causes of extinction. Lesson proper: B. Explore. (7 MINUTES) Activity 1: brainstorming activity The teacher will group the students into three groups Each group will be given an article for them to read and analyze. Group 1: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ufiiY7FFgkgYyKmOEJvgnHXzRgQIUmDHhm e5a-RpfxE/edit?usp=share_link Group 2: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1QQVgv1roLG4HY9v7ehZufbNOyXYHPvH5a W9tex0vWd8/edit?usp=share_link Group 3: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1IRFpaTc22fR4Sn0Wu9b9RxxXbMGL2OmXQh S2d1hdTpc/edit?usp=share_link Guide questions: 1. How would you categorize the species? (threatened, endangered, extinct) 2. What are the major causes of endangerment of the species? 3. How does the change in the environment affects the species? C. Explain. Interactive discussion (15 MINUTES) The Teacher will process the activity by presenting the concepts about the major causes of extinction. D. Elaborate. Let’s localize!!! (15 minutes) (Problem-based approach) Using the same group. Students are asked to think of the most evident problem that if not reprimanded can cause extinction and what can they do as students to minimize and help prevent the said problem. Instruction: Think of an existing problem in your community that can contribute to extinction of species. Make an action plan on what you would do to help mitigate the problem. Group: Community address: Problem: Objectives (list of team objectives) Tasks (what you need to do to achieve your objectives) Success Criteria (How can you identify your success) Time frame Guide questions: 1. What problem have you observed in your community that can contribute to extinction? 2. What solutions can you do to help mitigate the effect of the said problem? Each group will present their work through power point presentation. E. Evaluation (5 minutes) A short quiz will be given at the end of the session. 1. What major cause of extinction is characterized by Excessive use of species for its economic value? a. Pollution b. Habitat loss c. Climate change d. Overexploitation 2. Which of the following can cause Coral reef bleaching? a. Pollution b. Habitat loss c. Climate change d. Spread of invasive species 3. Dynamite fishing, land expansion and kaingin farming falls under what type of major cause of extinction? a. Pollution b. Habitat loss and degradation c. Climate change d. Overexploitation 4. The end of existence of a known species is called ___________. a. Degradation b. Extinction c. Migration d. Adaptation 5. It is characterized by altered weather patterns, increased temperature globally resulting in changes in environmental thresholds beyond the species can tolerate. What major cause of extinction is it? a. Climate change b. Pollution c. Habitat loss d. Extinction 1. Assignment (2 minutes) The students will be given an assignment to be submitted the following day. Instruction: Make a multimedia presentation of a timeline of extinction of representative microorganisms, plants, and animals. RUBRICS: CATEGORY Creativity & design Timeliness Attention to theme 5 All of the graphics or objects used in the collage reflect a degree of student creativity in their display. Output is submitted on or before the agreed upon due date. Student was able to relate the output to the assigned theme. For all of the pictures included, the relationship is clear 4 Most of the graphics or objects used in the collage reflect student creativity in their display. Output is submitted one day late Student was able to relate the output to the assigned theme. For many of the pictures included, the relationship is clear This will serve as their performance task. 3 Only a few graphics or objects reflect student creativity, but the ideas were typical rather than creative. Output is submitted 2 days late 2 None of the graphics or objects reflects student creativity. Student was fairly able to relate the output to the assigned theme for a couple of the pictures included, the relationship is not quite clear Student has poorly able to relate the output to the assigned theme for a couple of the pictures included, the relationship is not clear. Output is submitted 3 days late (and so on)
