There are approximately 1 billion (one thousand million) bicycles in the world today. Since the ‘bicycle boom’ at the end of the 19th century, when bikes first sold in their thousands across Europe and the USA, people have used the bike for all sorts of reasons. These include commuting to work, carrying goods or for sport. But there are different designs of bikes for different needs. The most basic model, called a utility bike, has a heavy frame (the main part of the bike), with wide tyres and seats. This type of bike is cheap to buy and easy to repair, but is only suitable for short distances as it can weigh more than 14 kg. In contrast are the high-performance super-light track bikes used by elite athletes. In order to be light and fast, these track bikes only have one single fixed gear (the part of a bike that helps a rider go at different speeds) and no brakes. Track bikes must weigh at least 6.8 kg, but nowadays the engineering is so advanced that an athlete often has to add something extra to the bike to achieve this weight. Road bikes are light (up to 9 kg), with narrow tyres, and are designed for speed. Mountain bikes have powerful brakes, tyres to prevent slipping, up to 27 different speeds, and weigh between 11 and 16 kg. Other modern bikes include hybrid bikes, which combine features of road and mountain bikes, and folding bikes, which can be easily carried onto a train or a bus. 1 When did bicycles first become popular in Europe?
