Baptism and Temptation of Jesus Prepared by: Laurice Kaye P. Laguinday, LPT CHRISTIAN FAITH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT How do you Truly know a Person? Point of Reflection: Recitation 1 What is the true significance of John’s baptism for the person of Jesus? 3 JESUS as the FOUNDATION of the Church the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. A calling to His Mission, in the fulfillment of God’s plan of Salvation to humanity. 4 JESUS as the FOUNDATION of the Church The baptism had two foci: repentance and eschatology. In submitting to John’s baptism Jesus demonstrated “his willingness to take on the servant’s role, entailing his identification with the people.” 5 The account of Jesus’ Baptism (Mark 1:9-11) is legend, certain though it is that the legend started from the historical fact of Jesus’ baptism by John. It was told in the interest not of biography, but of faith and it reports Jesus’ consecration as Messiah. Rudolf Bultmann 6 BAPTISM After the death of John the Baptist Jesus sort of launched His public ministry or Mission. His message was: The time has come the kingdom of God is near repent and believe the good news. It gives us the initial idea of how Jesus changed or transformed in another Mission. Go signal that Jesus was ready to submit himself in the mission. It implies transformation, new beginning and new life. Jesus is a new person. 7 Baptism is the means by which God acts to forgive past sins for which Jesus died (I Cor. 15:3), and so baptism is essential to the good news message that must be believed. 8 Point of Reflection: Recitation 2 How was Christ tempted? How closely does Christ’s temptation relate to our common experience of temptation? 9 The Temptation of Jesus Jesus was offered power, turn stones into bread, offered prestige in the whole of Jerusalem, He was offered wealth and even tested God. 10 Christ, undergoes the “devils” attack in his own temptation, defeats these principalities and powers so as to gain for all humankind a victory—not over human nature or over the world but over the personal, demonic agents of evil that attempt to thwart God’s purposes and prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. FOCUS: the full acceptance of God’s will. “is a descent into the perils besetting mankind, for there is no other way to lift up fallen humanity. Jesus has to enter into the drama of human existence, for that belongs to the core of his mission; he has to penetrate it completely, down to its uttermost depths, in order to find the ‘lost sheep,’ to bear it on his shoulders, and to bring it home.” “ Pope Benedict XVI 12 In the description given by Pope Benedict XVI Jesus’ temptations as reflecting “the inner struggle over his own particular mission.” The path forged by Christ in this event is an ‘internal’ one involving a struggle against evil that followed him along every step of his journey. 13 Thanks!
