Education is particularly a very important aspect in our life. As the K to 12 Curriculum implemented here in the Philippine education wherein there is an addition of two years in secondary education which is called Senior High School (SHS). Along with that is the K to 12 Curriculum Exits; Trabaho, Negosyo, Kolehiyo, and Middle Skills Development. The K to 12 education main highlights is the career pathways or also known as the Track or Strands. There are 4 types of Strand that senior high school program can offer; Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS); Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM); Accountancy and Business Management (ABM); Technical Vocational-Livelihood (TVL). But this study focuses on the Implications of HUMSS strand to the K to 12 Curriculum Exits. This new curriculum is part of the of President Benigno “Noy-noy” Aquino III’s Educational Reform program. K to 12 is a term used in education and educational technology in the United States, Canada and some other countries, is a short form for the publicly supported AURORA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL school grades prior to college. K to 12 education is the foundation of a student’s academic career. It provides the basic knowledge and skills necessary for success in college and the workplace. K to 12 education system also plays an important role in preparing young people for the challenges of adulthood. But there are two remaining country in the world that has a 10-year basic education program: Angola and Djibouti. Most countries across the globe operate on 12-year basic education and Philippine is one of that countries. In K to 12 education system, students are given the chance to more understand their subjects in a more practical way. Students will be guided on their decision making especially in choosing a strand that will fit in their skills, talents and ability. P-noy Administration also believes that adding two more years to basic education in the Philippines could help to solve the problem of unemployment, keep up goal standards, and help Filipino students to have more time to choose what K to 12 curriculum pathway they will be in. (Implication of the Implementation of the K to 12 Curriculum Exits to the Students at Divine Word College of Legazpi City SY 2017-2018 ) Prior to the implementation of the K to 12 Curriculum program, problems and challenges were already identified AURORA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL by the department of Education based on their studies. Among of those, Philippines is the last country in Asia and one of only three countries in the world (the other two being Djibouti and Angola of Africa) with a ten-year pre-university program. (Care, E and Valenzuela, E 2012) According to Ma’am Irene Famorcan Almazan, HUMMS Strand Coordinator, and Ma’am Melody Manigbas, Senior High School Coordinator in ANHS, that not of all those students who graduated under HUMSS strand made a decision that is aligned in the curriculum exits. To be able to solve this problem the researchers conduct this research and going to have a program about Humanities and Social Sciences Strand. This program will talk about the strand implications and its alignment to the students decisions after graduation. HUMSS program will be also beneficial for students entering senior high school, one of the most important decisions is to choose a track or strand to specialize in. The HUMSS strand senior high school strand is designed for students who intend take up journalism, communication arts, education, and other social science related courses. HUMSS is a heavily–centered strand which require the students to learn, write, and present multiple papers throughout senior high school. Students under this strand AURORA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL will be exposed to eye-opening subjects such as world religions, Philippine and world literature, political and community development specialization subjects, and more.(OEd Senior High School Get To Know HUMSS Strand) In addition, the K to 12 Curriculum Exits also help the student what path in life they are going after they graduate high school. Is it to find a job, build a business, continue their study and get a degree or go to a vocational school wherein your attending classes for only 2 years but also doing a training. Furthermore, according to Care, E and Valenzuela, E. (2012), poor quality of basic education was reflected in the inadequate preparation of high school graduates for the world of work which contributes to the relatively high unemployment rate among the young and the educated. The researchers conduct this study to know the implications of HUMSS strand to the k to 12 curriculum exits of grade 12 graduates batch 2021-2022 in ANHS. This study hopes to provide an objective evaluation of the variables presented in the study. Researchers also want to find out what does the SHS graduates did after their graduation. AURORA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Statement of the Problem This study aims to find out what are the implications of HUMSS Strand to the K to 12 Curriculum Exits of Grade 12 Graduates of Batch 2021-2022 in ANHS. This study seek to answer the following questions: 1. What is the current status of grade 12 graduates batch 2021-2022 in ANHS in terms of: 1.1 Trabaho; 1.2 Negosyo; 1.3 Kolehiyo; and 1.4 Middle Skills Development? 2. What are the implications of HUMSS strand to the grade 12 graduates of batch 2021-2022 in ANHS in terms of: 2.1 Trabaho; 2.2 Negosyo; 2.3 Kolehiyo; and AURORA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 2.4 Middle Skills Development? 3. What symposium and workshops can be formulated based on the findings of the study? Scope and Delimitation The researchers focuses on the implications of HUMSS strand to the K to 12 curriculum exits such as: Trabaho, they are the students that are working after graduating senior high school; Negosyo, students who build a business after graduating senior high school; Kolehiyo, they are the one who pursue college after graduating senior high school to have a degree; and Middle Skills Development, students who are taking up a 1 or 2 years course just like vocational courses; of grade 12 graduates of batch 2021- 2022 in Aurora National High School. This study was conducted during the school year 2022-2023. This research study is intended to all Grade 12 students of batch 2021-2022 section of Titans and Amazon graduates who had taken HUMSS Strand in Aurora National High School with the total population of 51 graduate students who had taken HUMSS strand. In order to gather all of the research data, the researchers will use a survey questionnaire through AURORA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Google Form as a data gathering tool. Copies of questionnaire includes questions that will determine the Implications of Humanities and Social Sciences Strand to the K to 12 Curriculum Exits of Grade 12 Graduates of Batch 2021-2022 in Aurora National High School. Theoretical Framework This study was anchored on the following theories pioneered by Rational Choice Theory, Cognitive Theory and Social Learning Theory. Rational Choice Theory (1950s-1960s) in social work is an important concept because it helps explain how individuals make decisions. According to the definition of rational completed choice by theory, first every choice considering the that costs, is made risks is and AURORA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL benefits of making that decision. Choices that seem irrational to one person may make perfect sense to another based on the individual’s desires. Using rational choice theory is expected to result in outcomes that provide people with the greatest benefit and satisfaction, given the limited option they have. Economics, psychology, and philosophy are just a few of the disciplines where rational choice theory is applicable. According to this view, people make decisions based on their own interests in order to maximize their own benefits. People consider their options before making the decision they believe will best serve them. Individual tastes determine how people pick what will benefit them the most. One person might conclude, for instance, that giving up smoking is beneficial for them because they wish to preserve their health. Another person can make the decision to smoke because it helps them relax. Despite their contrary choices, both people make them in order to benefit themselves the most. Moving from economics to the social sciences, in the 1950s and 1960s, sociologists George C. Homans, Peter Blau and James Coleman promoted rational choice theory in relation to social exchange. These social theorists stated that a rational calculation of an exchange of costs AURORA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL and rewards drives social behavior. Rational choice theory in social interactions explains why people enter into or end individual and group relationships. In relation to the study, it is all about decision making which is very important to the study. It helps the individuals to think and make decisions about a certain thing just like what does the respondents did. They are making decisions about what they are going to do after graduation. Even if their choices or decisions are seems irrational to others there are still individuals who think that they made a good choice. Using this rational choice theory is expected to result that their decisions are beneficial to them. Development of Cognitive Learning Theory (CLT) is credited to educational Psychologist, Jean Piaget, and is useful in the analysis of the relationship between mental processes and factors, both internal and external. Coined in the 1936, Piaget developed the CLT to suggest that knowledge is something that is actively constructed by learners based on previously-learned knowledge. (Cf Active Learning Theory) Cognitive theory are characterized by their focus on the idea that how people think leads to arousal of AURORA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL emotions that disturbed healthy certain emotions emotions thoughts and and and behaviors adaptive and beliefs lead to others lead to Instead of behavior. focusing solely on observable behavior. Cognitive Theory seeks to explain how the mind works during the learning process. It seeks to understand human learning, socialization, and behavior by looking at the brain’s internal cognitive processes. Cognitive theorists want to understand the way that people process information. (PsychInfo Database Record APA). In relation to the study, it focuses on analyzing the decisions of grade 12 graduates who had taken HUMSS strand after graduating. This theory is all about the ability to think which is a very big help to the researchers to know what the respondents have done after graduating senior high school. The researchers are also going to determine if when the respondents are taking up the HUMSS strand and under the learning process, is there a sudden thought that why they are in that strand. And because of this theory the researchers are able to find out what are the capability of respondents to think especially during decision making. In 1961 and 1963, Albert Bandura conducted a series of experiments to determine whether social behaviors AURORA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL (aggression) could be accrued by observation and imitation. The research that entailed children observing a model punch an inflatable doll looked to support the idea that children emulate their behavior by watching others. These experiments were collectively known as the Bobo doll experiments. Supported by his findings in the Bobo doll experiments, Bandura developed the Social Learning Theory in 1977. The theory later evolved into the social cognitive theory in 1986 which postulates that learning takes place in a social framework with an ever-changing and shared interaction between the person, environment and behavior. This theory posits that learning occurs by observing others and modeling their behavior. In order for social learning to occur, a person must want to emulate the person they’re watching. The individual pays close attention to the action and retains the action in memory. Then, the individual must experience a situation where the behavior can be repeated and must be motivated to repeat the behavior. The social change theory explains the interaction with other people that can affect each other behavior. In relation to the study, it will going to help the AURORA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL researchers to determine if interacting with others can influence the respondents decision making. Like for example is, because they have taken the HUMSS strand is because of the people around them not because of their self - interest, and, after graduating they really want to pursue college but again because of their interaction with other people which decision suddenly change. maybe influence them, their AURORA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Conceptual Framework I P O Current status of grade 12 HUMSS graduate students and Implications Shaping Career of Humanities and Social Sciences Survey Strand to the K to Questionnaire 12 Curriculum Exits in term of: Paths for K to 12 Graduates Through Symposium and Workshops 1.1 Trabaho; 1.2 Negosyo; 1.3 Kolehiyo; and 1.4 Middle Skills Development Figure 1: Conceptual Framework on the Implications of Humanities and Social Sciences Strand to the K to 12 Curriculum Exits of Grade 12 Graduates of Batch 2021-2022 in Aurora National High School. AURORA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL CHAPTER II REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES FOREIGN LITERATURE According to the article published by Trance et al. (2018) states that the Department of the Philippine Education has implemented the K-12 Curriculum to both elementary and high school levels Basic Education starting the school year 2012-2013. Implementing this curriculum change the perception, reaction, and realization of different stakeholders towards the new curriculum. In addition, the article of Katie Terrell Hanna (2023) states that K to 12 education is the foundation of the students in able to achieve career success. K to 12 education provide broad knowledge about the world. Also k to 12 academic education preparation gave several benefits including, for college and workplace, the social and emotional development, exposure to different cultures and perspective, and opportunities for physical activity and extracurricular involvement. Senior High School curriculum in various part of the world is offered to prepare students for work or AURORA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL university life. The World Education News and Review (2016) presented various basic education curriculum in the world. On the other hand, there are articles and documentation which indicates the effect of studying in HUMSS . In the study “The Advantages of HUMSS Strand (2019)” revealed that HUMSS strand open up a world of job opportunities, as HUMSS strand graduates can find many applications and area for potential career development in various industries including scientific, artistic, legislative, an corporate careers. In addition, the article entitled “What Skills Can You Gain by Studying Humanities? (2017)” states that studying humanities can provide practical applications that can enhance your professional skillset and give you a competitive edge. Furthermore, in the document published by Pasarin (February 2019) states that one of the advantage of studying in HUMSS strand is that, your speaking, reading, and writing skills will enhance, and that it can also build your self-confidence especially when communicating with other people. This advantages will help you to become more competitive to finish your career. AURORA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL LOCAL LITERATURE In order to address this reality, the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 (R.A. 10533) is enacted into law. This law provides an additional two years to basic education, which is considered as senior high school in the Philippine educational setting. Senior High School allows the learners to choose their own track and strand base on their preferences, interests, skills, and knowledge. In the academic track, students may enroll to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) which engages problem-solving, the students creative in critical thinking, and collaborative skills; Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM) which a concentration corporate operations, management; which on Humanities considers the the foundational financial and concepts management, Social inclination offers in business Sciences (HUMSS) of students in journalism, communication arts, liberal arts, and other social science-related courses; and General Academic Strand (GAS) which caters the students who are undecided of their future college course (Department of 2016;Orale Sarmiento, 2016). Education, AURORA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL On the other hand, the Philippine Online Chronicles (2021) cited in one of its articles that K to 12 has been met with criticism from youth and students group, teachers, parents and the academic community. The DepEd, for its part, appears determined to enact the program with its proposed budget catering mostly to preparing the grounds for its eventual implementation. The article also stressed that it is arguably one of the most drastic and controversial programs of the Aquino administration. In the same article, the DepEd argues that the K-12 program will be the solution to yearly basic education woes and the deteriorating quality of education. Critics, however, counteract that the education crisis needs to be addressed more fundamentally and adding more school years would only exacerbate the situation. Republic Act 10533 signed by the incumbent President Benigno Aquino III aims to restructure basic education in the country by requiring Filipino students to undergo one year in Kindergarten, six years in primary school, four years in junior high school and two years in senior high school. Present during the signing were House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr., Education chief Bro. Armin Luistro, and senators legislation. and House members who authored the AURORA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL SYNTHESIS The Foreign Literatures above, had mentioned that Implementing this curriculum change the perception, reaction, and realization of different stakeholders towards the new curriculum. It is also states that K to 12 education is the foundation of the students in able to achieve career success and provide broad knowledge about the world. In article related to HUMSS strand states that studying humanities can provide practical applications that can enhance your professional skillset and give you competitive edge. In the Local Literature provided gave information what it is mean to implement the K to 12 curriculum here in the Philippines. Along with this implementation, it provides an additional two years to basic education, which is considered as senior high school Senior High School that allows the learners to choose their own track and strand base on their preferences, interests, skills, and knowledge. It is stated that the k to 12 program will be the solution to yearly basic education, and the researchers study focuses on the implication of the HUMSS strand to the K to 12 Curriculum Exits. That above mentioned a AURORA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL literature will be a very big help to the researchers as their references. FOREIGN STUDIES In the study of Danilo et. al (2016) entitled “Senior High School (SHS) Curriculum of the Philippines, Japan, and the US”. Results of the review show that the SHS curriculum is intended to prepare students to enter into college/university or to work in the industry or be an entrepreneur. The SHS program is the last level in all basic education programs of the countries reviewed. The Philippines has a clearer model with at least four tracks (academics, tech-voc, sports, arts & design) and at least ten strands. Japan has two tracks in academics and techvoc. The US basic education system varies from state to state, similar to its SHS curriculum. In addition, it says that there is no definite track as this is left to individual state and their school districts to decide. There are purely academic, tech-voc and other types of schools. The majority of those who choose academic college. track are students who plans to proceed to There are still a stigma in selecting tech-voc and other courses as this are seen by many as the course for poor performing/problematic students. The enrolment in AURORA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL tech-voc schools in the US is declining despite the surge of demand for skilled workers. Furthermore, in the study of Crystal Vaught (December 2015) entitled “ The Internalization of K to 12 Education: A Case Study of an International School in University of Minnesota” stated that there are factors affecting that most influence the comprehensive campus internalization at this K to 12 education. It is also said that the respondent all agree that there is an interest et. al in campus internalization. LOCAL STUDIES In the study of Piando (2018) entitled "IMPLICATION OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE K-12 CURRICULUM TO THE GRADE STUDENTS AT DIVINE WORD COLLEGE OF LEGAZPI CITY SY 2017-2018" the students that are involved in the study said that the implementation of the K to 12 program that it is a must, because the primary objective of the program is to improve the quality of education so that, when the students finished the basic education they will be more productive. The most important contribution of the program to the students is to improve their abilities, and revolutionized the educational attainment. Philippines in terms of AURORA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL On the 2021)entitled other “What study of now? Awi The et. al Senior (December High School Graduates’ Curriculum Exits” stated that in the three batches of SHS graduates of Colegio de San Juan de LetranManila wand explore in their senior high school education to determine the quality of education and the relevance of the SHS curriculum in their present endeavors. Remarkably, the majority of the SHS graduates are pursuing tertiary education, and most of them are taking undergraduate degrees in business and engineering, and architecture. Some have ventured into entrepreneurship and have opted to work after graduation. The majority of the students per strand have taken undergraduate degrees that are aligned to their senior high school strand. However, there is a misalignment of the college programs taken by some of SHS graduates, but it is important to know that that the unique curriculum of Letran SHS allows the graduates to take any college program for their tertiary education, and the graduates had been admitted to higher education institutions. The study of Bacaling Dence Maurice (January 2019) entitled “ Career Decision and K to 12 Curriculum Exits of Senior High School Student” state that the first batch of the K to 12 Curriculum are about to graduate this year AURORA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL and many senior high school students are hesitant and worried if they will be able to land a job, a business on his own, proceed to college or take higher vocational course. To address these concerns and worries of the grade 12 students, an action research was proposed. Based on the findings of their research study, majority of the senior towards high school pursuing graduating their students studies to were higher geared education (Kolehiyo). Also, it is significantly noticeable that some students wanted to find a job after graduating (Trabaho). Furthermore, according to Sarmiento, D. and Orale, R. (2016), the k to 12 program is a more potent educational model compared to the old curriculum of basic education themselves education in the for or Philippines. more go rigorous immediately Students training to can in employment the or prepare higher be an entrepreneur. Synthesis The Foreign Studies above talks about the K to 12 education wherein it can be a references or guide of the researchers when conducting this study. According to the study of Orale et. al (December 23, 2016) entitled “Senior High School (SHS) Curriculum of the Philippines, Japan, and AURORA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL the US” stated that the SHS program will intended to help the students to be prepared in entering college, or to work or have a business. It also says that there is no definite track as this is left to individual state and their school districts to decide.
