GROWING TRENDS OF
THE IPM COURSE
STATISTICAL METHODS PROJECT
SECTION B/GROUP 05
ABSTRACT
IPM course is the 5years integrated MBA programme. The central hypotheses evaluated are;
IPM course is not equally popular among all age groups and the sources of popularity for IPM
is independent with regard to the time period. The conclusions were drawn using various
statistical tools. The research is based on primary data collected through google form-based
survey. This research is first of its kind as IPM was started in 2011 and so far, not much research
has been done about IPM. IPM is a highly demanded course which is evident from the high
number of applicants each year. Though in the initial years the popularity of IPM was low, now
it is widely known among the people especially among the 16-18years age group. Though 80%
of the sample knows about IPM, the depth of the knowledge is satisfying only with regard to
178 people. The internet and word of mouth have played a major role in the reach of IPM to
the public. IPM has conquered the appreciation of the public and 90% of the sample would like
to recommend IPM to others. More IIMs should definitely come up with the course as most
people demand the same.

INTRODUCTION
The five-year Integrated Programme in Management (IPM) is a unique and diverse one-of-akind programme offered for 12th passed students who wish to pursue an integrated MBA. In
India the programme for the first time was launched by IIM Indore in 2011 with a vision to
create young students with managerial and leadership aspirations. The programme aimed at
giving a world class education for the sprouting young leaders. Students are inducted through
an all-India entrance- IPMAT. Following the path of IIM Indore, IIM Rohtak also introduced
the integrated programme in management (IPM) in 2019. Major attraction of this programme
is the holistic curriculum and the internship offered that provides its students with immense
opportunities to enhance their skills and learn from a diverse of fields. A combination of
analytical rigour and wide exposure equips IPM students with leadership roles and position of
responsibility in different sectors. IIM Indore placed about nearly 1000 IPM students, with
10.24 % rise in average CTC last year and having highest placement of 90 lakhs per annum.
The prominent recruiters are amazon, intel, google, flip kart and so on respectively from about
140.
This statistical research aims at analysing the relevance and popularity of the IPM course and
also about the opinions of the people about this course. Since we are IPM students, we wanted
to know more on the popular sentiments about the programme that we are a part of. And also,
IPM is a newly introduced programme and not much studies have been conducted relating to
this aspect so far. Thus, it is the need of the hour to conduct this survey to find how deep the
roots of knowledge about IPM has gone into the people and effective it is in attracting the
young adults towards this course. The survey was conducted among a sample and further
conclusion was drawn from the data derived from this sample. Further analysis of the topic of
concern have been discussed and explained in this research report.

LITERATURE REVIEW
The research we did on the Growth trend of IPM is first of its kind. There was no previous
research and analysis done on this topic. We hope that our research work will be used further
in the research that is yet to come.
The data and other useful insights were collected using primary sources such as surveys.
Some online sources that were used in drawing some insights are as follows:

RESEARCH OBJECTIVES/ HYPOTHESES
Objective: To analyse the relevance of IPM (Integrated Programme in Management) course.
Hypothesis: 1. IPM course is not equally popular among all age groups.
2.The sources of popularity for IPM is independent with regard to the time period.

VARIABLES’ IDENTIFICATION, DATA
COLLECTION and DATA DESCRIPTION
Variables: Age, years, sources of IPM popularity etc. were selected as the variables.
Survey design:
In the Google form we had designed, we put questions to know the growing trends of IPM
course. Questions were direct and pertinent to one another. Key points to be added are
1. We started with the question of whether aware of the course or not in order to make the
survey more unprejudiced. It was the important fact to be known before exploring the
trends.
2. We put the rest of the questions optional as the logical move for viable results. Those
questions pointed to the popularity, attracting factor of the course, time and source that
people came to know about the course etc.
After reading the questions, if the respondents are aware of the IPM course, they have to
answer the source that made them aware of the course, the time they got to know about
IPM, rating of both IPM as a course and knowledge about IPM etc. In addition hypothetical
questions like whether more IIMs should offer IPM or not and if they recommend the
course to others or not were also asked for the sake of knowing the new trends.

METHODOLOGY
The primary methodology used was survey, using a structured questionnaire which was
circulated through Google forms across different social networking platforms like WhatsApp.
The questionnaire was also circulated through the IIMR domain mail. For further analysis,
various statistical tools were used.
For testing the hypotheses, we used chi square test. A chi square test is used to test whether a
table is a data is chi square data distributed. It is used to test whether there is a correlation
between the data in the two tables, i.e., whether the two tables are independent of each other.
It tests to see whether distributions of categorical variables differ from each other.

ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION
Since IPM is an integrated course it is intrinsic to basically know about the popular emotion
towards integrated courses compared to non-integrated courses. It was observed from the
survey that 76% of the sample preferred integrated courses (252/333) and this liking towards
integrated courses was more seen in the 16-18years age group (118). Integrated courses give
an assurity which is why most people prefer integrated courses. This shows the high attraction
of people towards integrated courses which then might lead to a liking towards IPM course.
This was a general question which further led to more specific questions over the IPM course.
Popularity of IPM course
Out of 333 samples collected 265 people are aware about the IPM programme which is
approximately 80% and 68 people are not aware of the program which contributed only 20%.
We can see that most of the people are aware of the IPM course and it shows that the IPM
programme is more socially established. It is also evident that most people (131/265) who know
about IPM are from the age group of 16-18years i.e., the young students who are/ going to be
in college, followed by the age group of 19-21years with 87/265 favourable responses. Thus,
IPM course is more popular among the young adults and is least known among the age group
below 16years.

Majority of the people surveyed are well knowledgeable about the IPM course with 47% and
people who are known but have less knowledge is only 5%. This indicates that only less than
half the samples are having a clear-cut picture of the IPM course and there’s a need to create
better and exact knowledge about the course among the people. Even though the course was
introduced just a few years back it has gained much popularity over time among the population
who are in the educational background. But we can also infer that since the population that
took part in the survey are mostly those who are educationally active the administrators or
colleges can invest a bit more in advertisements or activities to make the course popular.

Majority of the people surveyed came to know about IPM in the period of 2017-19. In this
period 53% of the people got to know about the course. In the period of 2011-13, only 6 people
were aware of the course. It has been increased up to 168 in the period 2017-19. Number of
people who are getting to know about IPM is increasing time to time. This shows that IPM was
less popular 9 years ago. It Mainly gained its popularity after 2016. IPM started for the first
time in 2011 in IIM INDORE. It was in 2016 the first batch of IPM passed out. The placements
of IPM students after graduating has a positive interconnection with its popularity. The course
has caught the eye of people quite well as we can see the popularity is rising through the years
and people are getting attracted to the course structure as it is giving students managerial and
business training from a very early stage of their lives. We can conclude that good placements
and salary packages have increased the popularity of IPM as a course.
Source of popularity
Media rules the world in many ways. So, for such a course to be popular among people it had
to be through some kind of media or institution so we decided to take a check on how these
courses were popular among people. From the data collected ,the sources of knowledge about
IPM course are the internet, word of mouth, coaching, newspaper, and others. Among this
internet is the main source of spreading knowledge about the IPM programme and 33% of the
people came to known about the IPM course by internet. Word of mouth grab the second
position with a slight lower 32%. It indicates that most of the people opt or suggest this
program to everyone have a positive trend in growth of IPM program .With a 39% coaching
grabbed 3rd position and with 14% others secured 4th position respectively .This indicates that
there is a developing of coaching sector along with growth of IPM course and it might create
this course more competitive. Newspaper is the least with only 6%. We can conclude that if we
use newspapers more effectively on spreading knowledge, it will also boost the growth of IPM.

Rating for the course
Rating matters when coming to choose something and for a student the people's impression on
the college is a big deal. While observing the data we have observed that in the survey it is
clear that 96 people have given a rating of 5/5 and 110 people gave the course a rating of 4/5.
Only 7 gave a rating of 1.
Even though the course was introduced just a few years back people find it good and are really

IPM? BUT WHY?!!!
We are humans and most of the time we make choices for a reason and we wanted to know
why people prefer this course. College is a thing of prime importance to today's person. What
reason could possibly drive the youth to this course? In the survey we gave out some options
like brand value of IIM, safety of MBA, holistic curriculum etc. And after analysing the report
we find that a large population preferred this course for the brand value of IIM.
The main pillar of the IPM programme is its diverse and holistic curriculum. The motivating
force behind the IPM programme is its strong foundation built at the undergraduate level in the
managerial sector. IPM programmes involve breakdown and knowledge consumption wrapped
around mathematics, economics, psychology and the disciplines that revolve around the main
pillars including sociology, statistics, accounting, behavioural science and other management
disciplines. The internship programme along with the IPM programme equips students with
practical knowledge. Another added perk is the enrolment together with PGP students who are
enrolled by cracking cat in the fourth year. For the IPM students career horizon is further
broadened. The massive exposure level and great interaction is not only with institutes and
large corporates but also with peers who have a shedding of light on IPM programs . Such
dynamic environment offered in IPM programme grooms personality of the individual and
equips them with very important quality and not just for successor in carrier field but as a handy
life tool too.

Majority of the people surveyed would like to see more IIMs starting IPM course. Currently
there are 20 IIMs in India. But only IIM INDORE and IIM ROHTAK are having IPM course.
People feel that the availability of IPM course is inadequate. They consider IPM as a course of
scope and security. In order to ensure the availability of seats of IPM course more IIMs should
start IPM. In 2011 number of applicants for IPM was merely 3000.But now it is nearly
30000.This exponential growth in the number of applicants shows the necessity of more IIMs
offering IPM course. This might have made IIM Rohtak start IPM in 2019.more IIMs like IIM
Bangalore and IIM Lucknow are planning to start IPM.
RECOMMENDATION OF IPM COURSE
WOULD YOU RECOMMEND IPM COURSE TO OTHERS?
Word of mouth plays an important role in growth of every trend. So, do people wish to

and leadership aspirations. IPM ranks high in academic sector. IPM offers job security and a
good salary package .This makes people recommend IPM course to others.
GOOGLE TRENDS
The google trends analysis (of the institutes), from 2011 to 2020 can also be used to analyse
the popularity of the course. It can be seen from the graph that every year during February-July
the search rates are higher (the time when applications are started till admission closes).

The trend line clearly indicates that, after the introduction of the IPM course in 2010 (IIM
Indore), 2019 (IIM Rohtak), the number of searches about the institute on Google have
increased. The fame and popularity of both the IIMs have increased rapidly after the
introduction of the IPM Course.

for the course, from 3 thousand to 30 thousand in the span of 9 years, which is a significant
jump. IIM Rohtak was the second IIM to come up with the programme in 2019, taking cues
from the success at Indore, and more IIMs are planning to follow in their footsteps as well, in
the near future.
Speculations about the acceptance of the course by the industry, were wiped off when the
placements started showing an ever-growing trend, which underlines the success of the course.

HYPOTHESES ANALYSIS
HYPOTHESIS 1
OBJECTIVE: “TO CHECK WHETHER THERE IS A CORRELATION BETWEEN AGE
AND POPULARITY OF THE COURSE”.
Since the course was first introduced in the year 2011, we were trying to find out how the
popularity of course is distributed among age groups, primarily of those aged between 17 and
23, as they would be more aware about the course, as the course started to become popular
during their time of study.
The hypothesis was made so as to study whether there was a proportionate distribution i.e.,
independent/dependent among the different age groups. Using the Chi square test, it was found
that there was no proportional relation between age and popularity. IPM was more popular
among the age group of 16-18years as they are the ones more indulged in this learning process.
There is a need for the older generations to know more about IPM and the opportunities it
provides.

HYPOTHESIS 2
OBJECTIVE: “TO CHECK WHICH MEDIA WAS MOST INFLUENTIAL IN
POPULARISING THE COURSE”
Since the course was introduced in the second decade of the 21 st century, a time when
technology was nearing its peak. Since it was the beginning of the advent of modern-day
technologies like the internet, making the course popular would have been less cumbersome,
than 10 years ago.
The hypothesis was made so as to study whether there was an independent/dependent relation
between the two. Using the Chi square test, we were able to conclude that the sources of
popularity of IPM is independent with regard to the period of time. Different sources had
varying and different influences on the popularity of IPM. During the initial years of
establishment, the internet and word of mouth appeared to be the major sources, even then the
popularity was minimal. In the period of 2017-19, coaching centres also earned a significant
contribution. The internet and word of mouth continue to be the major source of popularity.
Other sources like newspapers have a very less contribution.

CONCLUSION AND MANAGERIAL
IMPLICATION
The study was conducted so as to find trends about Integrated Programme in Management
(IPM) course offered by IIMs. Integrated courses are becoming the trend and are more
preferred over non-integrated courses. Around 78% people opt for integrated courses . Of the
333 respondents who took part in the survey (majority being non IPM students), 265 (80%)
were aware of the course, highlighting the popularity of the course. Within this 265, only 124
had complete knowledge about the course. It is to be noted that the data of another 29 could
not be taken into consideration, as the data was either incomplete or irrelevant.
The first main goal of the study was to analyse how the course was popular among different
age groups in the society, for which we couldn’t find any proportional distribution, as we had
anticipated. It was observed that the course was popular among the age group, 16-22years, as
80% of the respondents from the category were well aware of the course. Since the course is
just a decade old, the respondents from the ‘Y’ generation were not well versed about the same.
This highlighted how students in the present generation were willing to ponder about new
courses, rather than sticking to the cliched medicine or engineering degree.
Our second part of study was meant to find a relation between when the course became popular;
and how it spread through different masses. Even there, a proportionate distribution of data
was not found. It was found that ‘word of mouth’ and the internet were the main medium
through which the course got popular among the masses. An interesting data that was found
was that in the initial years after the introduction of the course in 2011, even many of the
coaching centres were unaware of the course, which was surprising given that the course was
introduced by IIMs which are regarded as tier-1 colleges in the country, however this trend has
reversed in the recent 5 years. It was also found that very few people (4.5%) of the respondents
had come to know about the course through newspapers. IPM gained its tremendous popularity
after 2016. It was in the same year the first batch of IPM passed out from IIM Indore. The
brand value of IIMs and safety of MBA make people more attracted towards IPM and also
makes them recommend the course to others as well.
From the study it could be easily deciphered that IPM course has now found foot both in
industry (as the placement statistics show) and as a good course for the aspirants who look
forward for a holistic enhancement of their knowledge and skills. Currently among the 20 IIMs,
only IIM Indore and IIM Rohtak are offering the IPM course and IPM is a well demanded
GROWING TREND OF IPM COURSE
20
course in India. In order to meet the gratifying level, more IIMs should offer this course. This
would also enhance the reputation of the course further. The number of applicants is increasing
year on year, and the trend seems likely to continue for years to come as well. In simple words
it could be concluded that the future of the course and aspirations look promising. And more
IIMs should come up with the IPM course providing opportunities for more aspirants and for
nurturing eminent leaders and managers.
Reviews, reviews reviews!!!
So, in the survey we asked the sample to give their personal opinions about the course and
many of them were really great so let’s take a look at a few of them.
A great course, most
