ASTHMA

Asthma Or COPD is a chronic lung disease affecting people of all
ages. It is caused by inflammation and muscle tightening around
the airways, which makes it harder to breathe.






Symptoms include:
coughing,
wheezing,
shortness of breath
chest tightness,
rapid respiration
CORTICOSTEROID

Corticosteroids are man-made drugs
that closely resemble cortisol, a
hormone that produce by adrenal
glands naturally.

Commonly referred as “steroid”.

Has potent anti-inflammatory effects.

Two forms of a drug for treatment of
asthma

Inhaled corticosteroids
oral corticosteroids
INHALED CORTICOSTEROID

Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS, also known as
glucocorticosteroids, glucocorticoids, steroids) are most
effective controllers used in the treatment of asthma.

It can effectively suppress the characteristic inflammation in
asthmatic airways, even in very low doses.

EXAMPLES:

Fluticasone (flovent),
Beclomethasone
Budesonide
(Qvar),
(pulmocort),
Mometasone
(asmanex) etc.

CONTRADICTION AND CAUTION
 Active respiratory tract infection(e.g., Pneumonia, tuberculosis)
 Severe allergy to milk proteins or lactose
 Cataracts
 Diabetes
 Infection of the eye
 Gastrointestinal problems
 High blood pressure
 Any kind of infection (viral, bacterial, fungal)
 A disease of the heart, liver, thyroid, or kidney
