Instructions: Write a 3-page analysis of the three works used in the discussion.
After Winter by Celine Bautista
edited by Sir Xavier
After Winter, as what I comprehend, is about hope. It’s like
a rainbow after the rain. Winter symbolizes sadness,
introspection, and personal struggle. It also marks the end of
the year in most countries, hence, the end of different things.
And why I concluded it as a poem of hope is because of the
word spring at the end. Spring comes after winter, which also
means the start of the year - a new beginning. It’s the season
of rebirth, joy and love. Spring is the one season that shows, in
stark terms, how good always triumphs over evil, light over
darkness. As the flowers starts to blossom, sparks new doors
of opportunity.
The author used third person point of view which she
also confessed that it was her personal experience. Imagery
present is relatable and is easy to visualize. For someone like
me who’s not a fan of poems, this one is easy to comprehend
and appreciate.

I first encounter the short story The Necklace when
I was in elementary. And in high school, we were able to
discuss it a couple of times that I got familiarize with the
story already.
The Necklace depicts the life of a struggling lower
class in the character of Mathilde. In the beginning, Mathilde
was introduced as a young and beautiful lady from a lower
social class family. She is married to a clerk who is unable to
provide for the extravagant lifestyle she wants to fit with the
society she believes she belongs to. She has a strong yearning that this attitude will lead them to their
tragic fate.
The story incorporates literary devices such as imagery, and symbolism.
LITERARY DEVICES IN
EXAMPLE
THE NECKLACE
IMAGERY
She dreamed of silent antechambers hung with Oriental
tapestries, lit from above by torches in bronze holders, while two
tall footmen in knee-length breeches napped in huge armchairs,
sleepy from the stove's oppressive warmth.
SYMBOLISM
The necklace symbolizes wealth and prosperity in the story.
Mathilde almost lost herself when she looked at herself in the
mirror, stunning as she wears the necklace. The look of the jewels
on her body is exactly the fantasy life she describes wanting in the
opening of the story.
Other than the extravagant representation of the necklace, its
loss is an indication that she will never have the life all her life she
always wanted. Because of the unfortunate event, they had to spend
ten years working to pay back their debts.
The coat that her husband offers her at the end of the ball
symbolizes a reminder of her current life and status. It is a relic of

her true life, one of modest means, that she is embarrassed by. The
act of putting the coat on, while leaving the ball, symbolizes
Mathilde's return to her true, ordinary life.
WE FOUND THE HAT by J.
Klassen
It looks good on both of us. –
But it would not be right.
If one of us had a hat
And the other did not.
The piece may be short, but it will give you a lot of things to ponder.
Children’s literature is a type of literature intended for children as the audience. It is
constructed easy to understand and words are laid bluntly, but is child-friendly. It is also lightthemed. And after reading, a realization and a lesson, mostly enhancing one’s attitude, can be
attained.
We Found A Hat, as for everyone, is a poem of sharing and power of friendship. But for me,
it is a poem of equity. It is very short yet it feels like you know what will happen next or what had
happened before.
