TEST FOR NUTRITIONS Benedict’s Test For Reducing Sugar: 1) To 2cm3 of glucose solution in a test-tube add 2cm3 of Benedict’s solution. 2) Shake the mixture and heat it by immersing the test-tube in a beaker of boiling water for 5 minutes. 3) After 5 minutes, if reducing sugar is present the colour will change from blue to green, yellow, orange or red depending on how much reducing sugar is present in the solution. Test For Fats: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) Take a dry test-tube. Add 2cm3 of ethanol to a drop of coconut oil in a test tube. Shake the mixture thoroughly. Add 2cm3 of water to the mixture. A cloudy white emulsion forms which indicates the presence of fat. Test For Proteins: 1) To 2cm3 of egg white solution in a test-tube add 2cm3 of Biuret solution and shake thoroughly. 2) The solution will become blue in colour. 3) After shaking, keep it steady for 5 minutes. 4) The colour will change from blue to violet which indicates the presence of protein. Test For Starch: 1) Take a piece of potato and add a few drops of iodine solution. 2) It forms a blue black colour which indicates the presence of iodine.
