today?
Wow! Very good, class!
So, how is everybody?
We are feeling great, Ma’am.
That’s nice to hear.
Review
Before we proceed to the next topic, let’s
have some recap of what we discussed last
meeting.
What did we talk about on our class last
time?
Yes, Carl?
(Carl is raising his hand)
We discussed about balanced diet
and basic concept of nutrition.
Very good! Can someone tell me what is
balanced diet?
Yes, Bryan?
(Bryan is raising his hand)
Balanced diet is a diet that contains
different kinds of foods in certain
quantities and proportions.
Precisely! Now can anyone differentiate
what is overweight and obese?
Yes, Joel?
(Joel is raising his hand)
When we say overweight, it means
having an excess body fat while obesity
means having a much higher amount of
body fat than being “overweight”
Excellent class! It’s nice to know that you
learned a lot with our previous discussion with
that give yourself a sexy clap.
(Everyone will do a sexy clap)
1, 2, 3 1,2,3 sexy!
B. Motivation
I guess everyone is now ready for the
new topic, am I right?
Yes, we are ready Ma’am!
Okay, but before we proceed, let’s have
first an activity.
I will group you into three (3) groups. So,
this will be the group 1, group 2, and group 3.
Here is the instruction, I will distribute four (4)
pictures per group and you need to identify
which among them is micro and macro nutrients.
I will provide a table each group and all you
need to do is paste it here. Do you understand?
Yes, Ma’am!
Go to your group and form a circle,
quietly. I will only give you three (3) minutes to
finish the activity.
(Students starts doing the activity)
Time’s up! Please settle down, everyone.
While doing the activity, what did you
observe?
Yes, Paulo?
Very good observation, Paulo! What
(Paulo is raising his hand)
All the pictures are food that is
healthy to our body.
else?
Yes, Joel?
Very Good! Upon observing the pictures
and while doing the activity, can anyone guess
what is our topic today?
(Joel is raising his hand)
It provides nutrients that our body
needed.
Yes, Jencie Roi?
(Jencie is raising his hand)
Ma’am, our topic for today is all
about nutrients.
Do you have any idea what is nutrients?
Nutrients are substances that
provides nourishment essential for growth
and the maintenance of life.
Very good, Jencie! In addition, nutrients
are also obtained to our diet since the human
body cannot make them.
C. Lesson Proper
Do you think having enough nutrients in
our body is important?
How can you say so?
Yes, Ma’am!
Yes, Adoniz?
Right! And where can we get those
nutrients?
Having enough nutrients is
important because it will help to support
and keep our immune system healthy.
(Per Angelo is raising his hand)
By eating healthy foods which
contains good nutrients that is needed by
our body.
Correct! Nutrients is very important in our
body because it plays a specific structural or
functional role in body’s activity. Nutrients have
two categories, what are they?
Yes, Geraldine?
(Geraldine is raising her hand)
The categories of nutrients are
micro and macro nutrients.
Very good! Do you have any idea what
are the difference of the two?
When we say macro nutrients, this
are the nutrients that is need to take in
bigger or larger amount while micro
nutrients are the nutrients that needed to
intake in smaller quantities.
Precisely! To further understand, let’s
discuss the difference of the two. I have here a
pocket chart and it is labeled micronutrients and
macronutrients. I also have here 8 flashcards
written the information about the two nutrients.
Now, I will call someone to identify
where this information belongs and after that we
will check if it is correct.
Come here in front Jammet and Eloisa.
All I want you to do is to identify where that
information belongs.
(Jammet and Eloisa participates)
Thank you, girls! You may go back to
your seats. Let’s check it through this table if
they put the flashcard in its correct place.

Nice try, class! Don’t worry you still got a
correct answer. Everyone is aware that macro
means big or large and micro means mall, am I
right?
That’s why macronutrients are required
large amount intake while micronutrients are
required small amount intake.
Did you understand the difference of micro
and macro nutrients?
Yes, Ma’am!
Do you have any question?
Yes, Jay Ann?
(Jay Ann is raising her hand)
Ma’am, how can we know if we are
taking the equal and required amount of
nutrients?
You will know it through your balanced
diet. That’s why it is important to have balanced
diet because it includes an equal and required
quantity of both macro and micro nutrients.
Did I answer your question, Jay Ann?
Yes, Ma’am. Thank you.
Other question, class?
None, Ma’am!
Let’s continue the discussion.
Macro-nutrients are obtained through the
diet as the body can’t produce them on its own.
There are three main suppliers of nutrition under
macronutrients, what are they?
Yes, Jammet?
(Jammet is raising her hand)
They are the Carbohydrates,
Protein, and Fats.
Correct! Can you define the three?
Carbohydrates or carbs are sugar
molecules. The body breaks down
carbohydrates into glucose. While proteins
are the building blocks of life. Protein is a
molecule made up of amino acid. Lastly,
fats are source of essential fatty acids,
which the body cannot make itself.
Very good, Jammet! Can anyone in the
class can give me example of carbohydrates?
Yes Niecole?
Correct! Another example?
Yes Jencie?
Very good! In addition, carbohydrates are
the body’s primary source of energy and brain’s
preferred energy source.
(Niecole is raising her hand)
Rice, Ma’am.
(Jencie is raising his hand)
Bread and Pasta, Ma’am!
Carbohydrates is important because it
provides us energy, however, how can
carbohydrates be harmful in our body?
Yes Rose?
(Rose Caila is raising her hand)
Carbohydrates can be harmful to
our body if we intake too much of it. It
may cause weight gain, increase the risk of
diabetes, heart disease, and high
cholesterol.
Precisely! Everything that is too much is
always bad to our health.
How about in protein? Anyone can give me
some example of protein?
Yes Allan?
Correct! Another example?
Yes Andrei?
Very good! Just like carbohydrates, protein
is also important in our body. Why? Why protein
is important?
Yes Adoniz?
Precisely! And who needs to take more
protein?
Yes Aristian?
(Allan is raising his hand)
Meat and fish, Ma’am.
(Andrei is raising his hand)
Eggs and dairy products, Ma’am.
(Adoniz is raising his hand)
Protein is important because it
helps us to repair and build muscle tissues.
(Aristian is raising his hand)
Athletes, bodybuilders, and those
who exercise 3 times per week.
Very good! They need more protein because
they do vigorous activities.
The last main supplier of nutrition in
macronutrients is what?
Excellent! And what fats do in our body?
Yes Niecole?
Fantastic! What kind of fats is bad to our
body? And why are they bad?
Fats!
Fats helps the body to absorb
vitamins A, D, and E.
(Carl is raising his hand)
Fats have two types the saturated
and unsaturated fats. The fats that are bad
to our body is the saturated fats. It is bad to
our body because it increases the risk of
disease even it is only eaten in small
intake.
Bravo! We should know what kinds of fats
we intake to prevent diseases, and too much of
eating fats may result to risky diseases.
Did you understand the macronutrients,
class?
Yes Ma’am!
Okay, let’s move forward to the next
category of nutrients.
The next one is micronutrients. It contains
two essential nutrients for a healthy body. These
are the what?
Yes, Emarie?
Precisely! And what are the function of
the two to our body?
(Emarie is raising her hand)
These are the Vitamins and
Minerals.
Vitamins helps release the energy
found in the food that we eat and minerals
maintain the correct balance of water in
your body.
Correct! In addition to that, vitamins and
minerals boost the immune system, support
normal growth and development, and help
organs do their jobs.
Do you understand now the difference of
the two?
Yes, Ma’am!
Okay. Let’s now talk about the importance
of nutrients in our human body. We all know that
nutrients is important but my question is how
and why nutrients important to our body?
Yes, Andrei?
(Andrei is raising his hand)
Nutrients is important in our body
because it helps us in many ways. It helps
us to fight disease and it gives us the
energy that our body needed.
Excellent, Andrei! Nutrients is indeed
important so I listed here five (5) importance of
nutrients to the human body, this are the
following;
1, It helps to build tissues – human body
consists of different types of nutrients.
Nutrients

Can someone tell me what nutrient is
intended in building tissues?
Yes, Carl?
(Carl is raising his hand)
Aside from water, Protein is the
most important building nutrient because it
does not only build tissues but also repair
it too.
Correct! Protein helps the body to build
and repair tissues. Next is (2) It produce energy.
What nutrient is one of the most important
energy sources?
Yes, Allan?
And where can we get Carbohydrates?
Yes, Paulo?
Very good! I can say that we are still on
the same page since you can still follow.
Aside from being an energy source,
Carbohydrates have also different uses in our
body. Anyone who can give me different uses of
Carbohydrates?
Yes, Camille?
(Allan is raising his hand)
It is the Carbohydrates.
(Paulo is raising his hand) We can
get from breads, starch, sugar, and grains.
(Camille is raising her hand)
The other uses of Carbohydrates
are to keep us alive, to keep us warm, and
to build tissue.
Correct. Another hand? Yes Ivan?
(Ivan is raising his hand)
Its uses are to secrete fluids, to
repair tissues, and to move & work.
Very good! Those are the different uses of
Carbohydrates. And last is (3) it helps in
building strong immune system and (4) it keeps
our body healthy.
Do you understand, class?
Yes, Ma’am!
Okay, let’s have some activity first for me to
know if you really listen to our discussion. Since
you have already your group, earlier. Please
form a circle, quietly. May I see where are the
group 1? Group 2? And group 3?
So, I will distribute two placards per group.
You will raise this emoji if your answer is fact
while raise this emoji if your answer is bluff.
I have here 10 statements and these 10 items
are equivalent into 20 points. You just have five
seconds to answer each statement. Did I make
myself clear?
Yes, Ma’am!
The group that will have the highest score
will receive a prize so good luck everyone.

score of each group. Group 1 gets 16/20 Group 2
gets 18/20 and Group 3 gets 20/20.
Congratulations, everyone! Give yourself a sexy
clap for doing a great job.
1, 2, 3 1, 2, 3 sexy!
Let’s continue our discussion.
Can anyone tell me what would happen if an
individual lacks of essential nutrients?
Yes, Ivan?
(Ivan is raising her hand)
If the person is lack of nutrients in
the body, he/she will prone from diseases.
Very good! What else?
Yes, Allan?
(Allan is raising his hand)
Lack of essential nutrients can
develop chronic diseases such as heart
disease, cancers, diabetes, and etc. Which a
person can get if he/she don’t have enough
nutrients in the body.
Precisely! That’s why it is important that we
intake enough nutrients that our body needed in
order to avoid diseases.
Before we proceed, I will present a short
video clip and you need to watch it very
carefully.
(Students start to watch the clip)
After watching the video, what did you
observe?
Yes, Christian?
(Christian is raising his hand)
Based on the video a child suffers
from malnutrition.
Very good observation. What else?
Yes, April?
Cedrick and his siblings do not get
enough nutrients that are very important to
our body.
Correct! Cedrick is part of the 8.1% who are
considered food poor. And when we said food
poor, what does it mean?
Yes, Eloisa Marie?
Precisely! And when an individual did not
get enough healthy food in their daily meal, they
can suffer from malnutrition, just like Cedrick
and his siblings.
Anyone can give me their idea what is
malnutrition?
Yes, Jammet?
(Eloisa Marie is raising her hand)
When we say food poor it is the
condition of being unable to get enough
healthy food.
It is a condition caused by not
getting enough right amount of key
nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals
that are needed for health.
Very good! According to WHO malnutrition
refers to deficiencies or excesses in nutrient
intake, imbalance of essential nutrients or
impaired nutrient utilization. The double burden
of malnutrition consists of both under nutrition
and overweight and obesity, as well as dietrelated non-communicable diseases.
Under nutrition manifests in four broad
forms, do you have idea what are those?
Yes, Niecole?
Correct! And do you have any idea what are
the difference of the three?
Excellent! Additionally, child wasting refers
to a child who is too thin for his or her height. If
Those are wasting, stunting,
underweight, and micronutrient
deficiencies.
Wasting is defined as low weightfor-height. Stunting is defined as low
height-for-age. Underweight is defined as
low weight-for-age. And micronutrient
deficiencies are lack of vitamins and
minerals that are essential for body
functions.
a child is stunted it means that he or she is short
for his or her age but not necessarily thin. While
an underweight child is either thin or short for
his/her age. Let’s see this picture, you can right
here the difference of a wasted, stunted and
underweight child.
Can you still follow, class?
Yes, Ma’am!
Under nutrition is and has always been a
serious problem in the Philippines. According to
World Bank (2021) one in three children (29%)
younger than five years old suffered from
stunting (2019) being small im size for their age.
There are regions with level of stunting that
exceed 40% of the population. In Bangsamoro
Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao 45%
of children below five are stunted, in
Southwestern Tagalog Region (MIMAROPA)
41%, Bicol Region 40%, Western Visayas 40%,
and in South-Central Mindanao Region
(SOCCKSARGEN) 40%. Micronutrient under
nutrition is also highly prevalent in the
Philippines.
Furthermore, malnutrition can lead into
death if it is not treated immediately. According
to UNICEF (2014), every day 95 children in the
Philippines die from malnutrition. 27 out of 100
Filipino children do not get past their fifth
birthday. A third of Filipino children are stunted,
or short for their age. Stunting after 2 years of
age can be permanent, irreversible, and even
fatal.
Can you still follow, class?
Let’s see if you are still listening. How many
children die every day because of malnutrition?
Yes, Aristian?
Correct! How about out 100, how many
Filipino children do not get past their fifth
birthday?
Yes, Marco?
Yes, Ma’am!
95 Filipino children die every day
because of malnutrition.
Out of 100 Filipino children, there
are 27 children who did not get past their
fifth birthday.
Very good. What do you think is the common
cause why there is a malnutrition here in the
Philippines?
Yes, Jasmine?
Precisely! According to The Hunger Project, 1
in 3 Filipino children below 5 years old is
malnourished due to extreme poverty and lack of
basic health education.
Did I make myself clear, class?
Do you have any question?
I think because of poverty.
Yes, Ma’am!
None, Ma’am!
D. Generalization
I know that you have learned a lot in today’s
discussion. So, can anyone tell me what is
nutrients? And why is it important to our body?
Yes, Jencie?
Correct! What are the two categories of
nutrients?
Yes, Per?
Very good! And if we lack in essential
nutrients, what will happen to our body?
Yes, Niecole?
Nutrients are the substances found in
food which drive biological activity and
are essential to our human body. It is
important because it helps an individual in
many ways.
The micronutrients and
macronutrients. When we say
micronutrients, it requires small quantity
intake and macronutrients requires large
quantity intake.
We will suffer from malnutrition that
sometimes led to death if it is not treated
immediately.
Precisely! Class, always remember that
having knowledge about nutrition and proper
diet is very important because it helps us to
know what are the nutrients that our body
needed. It also enables us to be aware of the
proper consumption of nutrients to avoid
micronutrient deficiency and malnutrition.
We have this saying that prevention is?
Great guys! Do you have any clarification?
Better than cure!!
None, Ma’am!
E. Application
For your activity, you will perform a nutri
jingle. You will create your own lyrics, make
sure that it is connected with our discussion. You
can adopt tone from different songs. Each group
would be given 3-5 minutes to perform their
jingle.
You can use the remaining time to
conceptualize and to draft your ideas.
See rubrics for evaluation.
Did I make myself clear?
IV.
Yes, Ma’am!
