Popular events like the football world cup and other international sporting occasions are
essential in easing international tensions and releasing patriotic emotions in a safe way. To what
extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
International sporting events, like the Olympics, Para Olympics, FIFA World Cup, international leagues
and matches are running globally every year. Most of them are between national teams from all over the
world. Many people hold the opinion that these events may contribute to reducing international tensions
and also releasing nationalistic feelings. But some of them do not support this opinion. However, I
completely believe this is true.
Generally, international games such as football World Cup and the Olympics are held worldwide
regardless of government relations. These competitions are happening even if two countries have
political problems with each other. Fortunately, this is the nature of sport games and will lead to
preparing a positive atmosphere, even if it is temporary. For instance, there is a non-friendly
relationship between the USA and Iran’s government, and when the Olympics come through, national
teams of these two countries play games face to face.
In addition, there is another important fact about positive effects of sporting events on social affairs.
When the national team of a country participates in an international tournament, an extraordinary
national support will happen. No matter if that nation has spread out of the homeland, they will join
together and will strongly support their national team. For example, when the national football team of
Iran has a match in the FIFA World Cup, the stadium will crowd by Iranians from all around the world
and they united to support their national team. This is what we called patriotic feelings and it shows
itself when a national matter happening.
In conclusion, the idea that international sporting competitions have positive effects on decreasing
political tensions is an undeniable truth. These events, also strengthen the national unity and refresh the
nationalistic emotions.
