Inquiry:How can we use the sun’s energy to cook?
Goal: To develop an instrument that can capture the sun's energy and use it for cooking.
Role: You are an environmentalist who wants to encourage people to rely on renewable energy and stop using fossil fuels
mostly for cooking.
Audience: The whole school community.
Situation:You are an environmentalist ecocentric in nature. You realize that members in your community rely so much on
fossil fuels like gas and coal as their sources of energy for cooking which produces pollutants like carbon dioxide and
other greenhouse gasses dangerous to the environment. Now you have to sensitize them on how well they can use natural
renewable resources like the thermal energy from the sun by developing some simple instruments that can capture and use
it for cooking. You must develop a sample of that instrument in groups and use it to present to the whole class how it
works, how much it costs, durability, efficiency and how eco-friendly this instrument should be.
Product/performance: Functional instrument that can be used to capture sun’s energy to cook and the presentation
informs of a report or sensitization message appealing to the public. You also need to explain how you have applied the
ATLs during this process.
Further guidance and instructions.
1. Begin by researching different types of instruments that capture sunlight, such as solar panels or solar ovens as page 85
MYP1 by concept textbook.
2. Brainstorm ideas for your own instrument. Think about what materials you will need and how you will construct it.
3. Create a design plan that includes a detailed sketch of your instrument and a list of materials needed.
4. Build your instrument using the design plan as a guide.
5. Test your instrument by placing it in direct sunlight and measuring how much sunlight it captures.
6. Evaluate your instrument based on the following criteria:
- Efficiency: How much sunlight does your instrument capture compared to other instruments?
- Durability: Will your instrument withstand different weather conditions?
- Cost: How much did it cost to build your instrument compared to other instruments?
- Aesthetics: Does your instrument look visually appealing?
A Well written process of developing the instrument and how it is eco friendly, a video of the whole process in developing this
instrument is required and must be attached in the presentation as evidence for this project.
NB; This project is not strictly a lab report: It can be just a sensitization message however backed up by the instrument
developed.
