NAME: Lesly Ann B. Llaguno PERFORMANCE TASK #2 SECTION: Grade 9- Eucalyptus DATE: March 2, 2023 FILM REVIEW ( DANTE’S PEAK) I.NARRATION Volcanologist Dr. Harry Dalton of the United States Geological Survey and his partner Marianne try to escape an erupting volcano in Colombia. Marianne is killed when a piece of cooled lava enters Harry’s truck’s roof and strikes her in the head as she attempts to get away from the ash and falling debris. Four years later, Harry receives a mission from his boss, Paul Dreyfus, to investigate volcanic activity in the small Washington town of Dante’s Peak, which is close to a dormant volcano in the Northern Cascades. As soon as Harry gets there, he meets Rachel Wando, the mayor, who has two kids named Graham and Lauren. Lauren screams as she sees two bodies that have been boiled by the water, while Harry stops Graham from jumping into the springs. Harry interprets this as a warning sign, tells Rachel to call a town meeting, and alerts Paul about the issue. Paul shows up and informs Harry that he is overreacting and that for the time being they will only observe as he is suggesting that the town put on alert. Harry and Rachel become closer as Paul and his team set up and look after the volcano. To keep an eye on it, Harry and Terry take a robot up the mountain. While Terry tries to fix the malfunctioning robot, an earthquake causes some of the rocks to collapse, causing his leg to fracture. While Terry is being taken to the hospital, Harry makes another unsuccessful attempt to warn Paul that this mountain will blow up. When Harry goes to say goodbye to Rachel, they almost kiss, but Lauren wakes up and says she wants a glass of water. Harry checks the primary water supply when Rachel notices there is a problem with the tap water and finds sulfur has leached into the water because of volcanic activity. The grandma wouldn’t come down the mountain, so Graham and Lauren stole her truck and drove up to her house. The grandma finally makes peace with Rachel, but after being carried down the mountain by Harry, she is unable to continue and passes away from the shock and pressure. Paul and the group leave the town with the assistance of the National Guard, but the swelling river has overflowed due to a combination of the volcano’s ice melting and the nearby dam collapsing. Harry, Rachel, and the kids make it back to town after finding a truck at a ranger station as the volcano erupts violently. In order to escape the pyroclastic cloud as it demolishes the town, Harry drives the truck into an abandoned mine that had previously served as Graham’s hiding place. He assures everyone that he will take them deep sea fishing when they leave, and he promises to return to Rachel and the kids. The mine collapses, blocking him off from Rachel and the kids as he returns the truck to switch on the beacon. Even with his arm injured, Harry turns on the beacon even as the truck is crushed under the force of the rocks. They are eventually all saved and returned together with Harry, who keeps his promise to take them deep-sea fishing. The camera moves over the ruined town as the helicopter carrying Harry and the Wando family flies away. II. REFLECTION In order to look into the mountain’s unusual seismic activity, volcanologist Harry Dalton travels to the remote territory of Dante’s Peak. Rachel Wando, the town’s mayor, and her family were people Harry got to know while he was there. Because of the boiling water’s high temperature and acidity, which can burn human skin, they came across and saw a couple who had been boiled to death while they were traveling through the forest. Harry comes to realize that, based on this evidence, an eruption is likely to happen. It explodes more quickly than expected when it finally does. When a volcano erupts, a cloud of ash, lava fragments carried through the air, vapor, also known as pyroclastic materials such as newly formed magma, and volcanic gases quickly transform a calm lake into an acidic death trap, resulting in the grandmother’s severe burns and death in the movie. The town had an earthquake before the volcanic eruption, which is one of the reasons why it explodes so strongly. I learned that we must maintain calmness and positivity during any disasters we may encounter, including earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. We should be updated about the current events in our area before disasters occur. As in the movie, staying connected to the world by watching the news or listening to the radio can help you stay informed. In order to avoid losing our valuables when evacuating, we should be prepared and pack our belongings in advance. Take immediate action and be safe when the authorities order an evacuation to your location. The people in the movie start screaming during the volcanic eruption. A lot of people died while others were in pain because they all started to panic. I learned that having knowledge about natural disasters, man-made environmental change, and family dynamics is very important because of the issues that are addressed in this film. The message of this film is that our world is fragile and that we must be aware of the effects of our activities. Also, it serves as a reminder of the power of nature and the importance of viewing it with respect. This movie’s captivating and interesting plot, as well as its breathtaking cinematography and special effects, may draw viewers in. This film is a good reminder of the need to be prepared for emergencies and the need to respect nature and the environment, which is really one positive thing to say about it. This story reflects the overarching theme that our world is highly connected and complex and that our actions have far-reaching impacts. It also emphasizes how important science and knowledge can be to our capacity to understand and manage this environment. I was thinking about the strength of nature and how powerless we are in its face after watching this film. The importance of being ready and the effects of our actions on the natural world are also highlighted, and it is very important for us to know. The main lesson of this film is that safety shouldn’t be sacrificed in favor of other interests, even those of the economy. Life is more important than any materialistic interests. It has just proven how cruel volcanic activity can be, how it can kill your loved ones and ruin your property in a short moment with no consideration on where it will pass.
