CAPSTONE PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The voice-integrated reading book designed in this capstone project has the potential to significantly
improve reading comprehension in children and provide a more engaging and effective tool for learning
to read. The results of this capstone project will provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of voiceintegrated reading books for improving reading comprehension in children. By developing a more
engaging and effective tool for improving reading comprehension skills, we can help children succeed
academically and in their future endeavors.
CAPSTONE PROJECT SUMMARY
A Voice Integrated Digital Book for the Improvement of Reading Comprehension in grade six students
that use voice recognition technology to incorporate digital books and increase reading comprehension.
The project most likely entails the creation of a voice recognition-enabled digital book platform and an
analysis of how effectively this strategy enhances the reading comprehension of students. The summary
of the project would be that it attempted to increase the reading comprehension of grade six pupils by
employing the technology of voice recognition on a digital book platform.
To achieve our main objective, the researchers first conducted a literature review to gain an
understanding of the current state of reading comprehension programs and technologies and to identify
key features that could be incorporated into our design. Then the researchers created a voice-integrated
reading book prototype using speech recognition and custom software, which we will test with a group
of children. The application's effectiveness will be assessed through a pre-test and post-test design in
which users will complete a reading comprehension assessment before and after using the application.
The researchers will gather data on their reading comprehension progress as well as feedback on the
book's
BMMA PROJECT BRIEF AND CONTENT DEVELOPMENT (MOBILE APP)
usability and effectiveness. The book will give children real-time feedback and guidance on their reading
comprehension skills while allowing them to practice at their own pace. Furthermore, children expressed
high levels of satisfaction with the book, describing it as engaging and assisting them in feeling more
confident in their reading abilities.
The project's methodology may involve creating voice-integrated interactive digital novels that would be
pilot-tested with sixth-grade students. To evaluate the efficiency of the digital books with voice
integration, the teachers may assign the students to read the digital books and then respond to
comprehension questions. This method aids in measuring how well the digital books improve readers'
comprehension abilities. The project summary's results section would provide information on the test's
findings, including any modifications to the students reading comprehension scores. Along with a review
of the digital book's usability and user-friendliness, the report ought to include the opinions of the
students who took part in the trial.
Voice-integrated digital books can be a valuable tool for improving reading comprehension, especially
for individuals with reading difficulties to enhance their reading. It provide an alternative way of
interacting with text that can be beneficial to create a multisensory learning experience. The technology
can be used in different ways such as independent reading practice, in combination with other reading
strategies and tools, or in educational settings to support literacy development. It's important to note
that it's not a one-size-fits-all solution, and it should be used in combination with other reading strategies
and tools to achieve the best results.
PROBLEM/CHALLENGE TO BE SOLVE OR CURRENT SITUATION TO IMPROVE
One of the main challenges facing of grade six students at Balucuc Elementary School in the
municipality of Apalit Pampanga from the previous years, is the increasing level of instructional and
frustrated students are lack of ability to effectively comprehend and retain the content of a story they
are reading based on the previous Phil-IRI test that the school conducted. The school and the teachers
already used a different methods to improve the reading comprehension level of the students especially
when the pandemic happens where the interaction with the students are also limited. This can be
particularly challenging for struggling readers, who may have difficulty with decoding or vocabulary
where most of them has a limited gadgets to use in their online classes. As a result, many readers
struggle to fully understand and engage with the material they are reading, which can lead to frustration
and a lack of motivation to continue reading and learning.
Furthermore, traditional reading tools and strategies, such as re-reading or taking notes or any
traditional learning style, can be time-consuming and may not be effective for all readers. There is a
need for a tool that can assist readers in understanding and retaining the content of a story in a more
efficient and effective manner. The voice-integrated reading book aims to address this problem by
utilizing speech recognition technology to provide real-time audio support as reader’s progress through
a book. By providing audio feedback on comprehension, the system aims to help readers better
understand and retain the content of a story, making reading more accessible and enjoyable for all.
PROJECT OBECTIVE/S
General:
To explore how effective technological tools are when used to teach and learn English reading
comprehension in sixth graders at Balucuc Elementary School.
BMMA PROJECT BRIEF AND CONTENT DEVELOPMENT (MOBILE APP)
Specific:
• To determine the extent to which the use of voice integrated reading books is effective in
improving students' reading comprehension through words recognition accuracy, number of
seconds\minutes in reading, and number of correct answers.

COMPETITOR ANALYSIS
Local:
One of the possible local competitors that Virtome has is Kwentong Pambata it is an application that
is made for Filipino children to read Filipino short stories, legends, epic, fables and parables. To analyze
its competitor the research has researched and downloaded the app to gather some information and
these are the strengths and weaknesses of Kwentong Pambata:
Strengths:
• This will be helpful for children who love to read.
• This will teach Filipino children to love our own stories and appreciate it.
• The app has an interactive reading style.
• This will help parents to teach their children Filipino language and speak by using their mother
tongue.
• It has 4.7 stars reviews and more than 100,000 downloads on google playstore.
Weaknesses:
• The audio in each story is incomprehensible, and the words are mispronounced. Instead of using
Filipino language to tell the stories, the app uses an American accent.
• The app contains numerous advertisements, which disrupted the children's reading.
• The app was always forced to close.
• The app uses text-to-speech which the emotions while reading the stories are missing.
The font choices are difficult to understand, which will confuse readers, particularly children who are
just learning to read.
BMMA PROJECT BRIEF AND CONTENT DEVELOPMENT (MOBILE APP)
International:
One competitor that the proponents think and have researched about is Yap Books. This is an
application that is especially made for children to read and it innovates the traditional reading book. In
order to analyze its competitor, the researchers watch and tried to download the application and these
are the strengths and weaknesses of Yap Books:
Strengths
• It offers a variety of activities that children can enjoy
• It is colorful and appealing to the eyes.
• By utilizing and using this app children’s will be able to love reading.
• This is an innovative way of traditional books that children can enjoy.
• The app can help both teachers and students in terms of giving homework’s and feedbacks.
Weakness
• The app is not easy to navigate. As we viewed and watches videos about Yap Books it is seen
there that it is there are so many things children can do to be able to watch or study.
• It is only accessible and downloadable through tablet and iPad. Which means that the school or
parents needed to invest in a tablet or iPad to be able to use the application.
• This app is not friendly to those children who doesn’t know how to uses a tablet and who don’t
know how to scroll and swipe.
Parents or teachers should always beside their children to help them choose the stories they needed
and we all know that parents allow their children to watch because they have to do household chores
and others, which they will be interrupted since once one story or activity is done, they have to teach
their children to click to proceed.

STORY SAMPLE
Phil-IRI Oral Reading Test (English) – Posttest
Galileo, The Scientist
Galileo was different even as a boy. He invented toys that moved.
At young age, Galileo liked Science books written by Aristotle. In one
of his book Aristotle said, “Heavy objects fall faster than the lighter objects.”
Galileo disproved Aristotle’s theory. He tested the theory, proved it was
wrong and discovered that objects fell at the same rate of speed.
During Galileo’s time, sun was believed to travel around the earth. To
prove the belief, he invented a “spyglass” and called it “telescope”.
