Introduction
WellTracer® offers a low cost method to quickly and reliably determine lift gas entry point (s) without
well intervention.

Detect the presence of multiple lift points
Identify depth of operating valve(s)
Detect injection gas leaks into production tubing
WellTracer® complements a well test by providing verification of the wells operation during stable
production. A change in lift depth, multiple lift depths, or tubing leaks can be identified at a glance.
WellTracer® is suitable for permanent hook-up at a well test separator and can be one step of automatic
well testing.
AppSmiths recommends reading this manual before attempting to conduct a WellTracer®
Survey

Receiving the WellTracer Components

Once the unit has arrived, open each container shipped and inspect the components for damage
or wear.

Logistical & Operational Issues
•
There are several logistical & Operational issues that affect running the WellTracer®.
Logistical Issues
Transporting the WellTracer® Unit
• The WellTracer® is comprised of at least two (2) containers.
• These containers will need to be received in a location where the WellTracer® can be checked
for damage due to transportation prior to commencing the WellTracer® Survey(s).
• The WellTracer® Unit will need to be transported to each well site.
• The WellTracer® Unit is rated 4X and is resistant to most environmental elements, such as rain,
snow or dust/sand. The WellTracer® is not submersible.
Powering the WellTracer®
• The WellTracer® Unit and subsequent laptop require a source of electric power.
• WellTracer® is equipped with a standard 600V Portable Oil and Water Resistant Submersible
Flexible Power Cord, Rated Class 1 Div. II Hazardous Locations.
Note: WellTracer® requires 100VAC-240VAC at 50-60 Hz for operation.
Note: For some locations a power cord adapter will be required.
Laptop Computer
• A laptop computer is required to view data during the WellTracer® Survey(s).
• A laptop computer is also required to transfer the WellTracer data to WinGLUE. The laptop
must have a serial (RS-232) port.
• The laptop computer can be provided with the WellTracer® or be acquired from a local source.
Locating the WellTracer®
• The WellTracer® and associated equipment are not certified intrinsically safe and therefore
must be located in a safe working zone. WellTracer® is resistant to precipitation and ambient
dust/dirt.
Gas Cylinders
• CO2 and Nitrogen must be obtained locally in sufficient quantities to perform the WellTracer®
Survey(s).
• The gas cylinders must be located within a reasonable distance to the safe working zone.
Digital Scale
• A digital scale is required to ensure the proper quantity of CO2 is injected into the well.
• The digital can be provided with the WellTracer® or be acquired from a local source.

Operational Issues
Well Modeling Data
• In order to predict the travel time of the CO2 and to analyze the collected data, the well data
must be modeled in WinGLUE®.
• WinGLUE® requires Mechanical data (Tubing String, Casing String, Flow-line), Installed Mandrels
and Valves, Lift Gas properties, Reservoir data, Well Test data, Deviation data and, if available,
current Gradient surveys to properly model a well.
• Once the well data has been validated and any necessary calibration has been performed on the
WinGLUE® model, the WellTracer® Prediction can be run.
•
The WellTracer® Prediction will calculate the time required for the CO2 to reach each
mandrel, giving a total travel time in the casing and a total travel time in the tubing.
Fluid/Gas Discharge
• The sample stream from the well will produce discharge gasses and discharge fluids.
• Suitable fluid waste containers must be located within a reasonable distance to the safe working
zone for discharge fluid collection.
• A typical WellTracer® Survey will produce five (5) to seven (7) gallons of discharge fluid.
• A well known to produce emulsion will result in greater amounts of discharge fluids. The
volume will be considerably less if the well has low productivity and/or high gas production.
Data Acquisition Software
• No software is required for data acquisition. WinGLUE® is required to view the data collected
during the WellTracer® Survey, to extract the collected data from the WellTracer® data logger
and to reset the data logger for a new WellTracer® Survey. WinGLUE® can be obtained from
AppSmiths.
H2S Monitoring
• No H2S monitoring equipment is provided with the WellTracer®.

Connecting the WellTracer® Components
•

All valves on the WellTracer® should be closed, with the exception of the ½ inch separator
discharge valve, when making initial field connections.
Ensure well head area is free from explosive and/or hazardous atmospheres.
Make all physical well connections prior to connecting the low pressure sampling hose.
If using a trailer mount bleed tank, be sure bleed tank is properly grounded to well head before
making any connections from the WellTracer®.
WellTracer® Unit Overview
•

The WellTracer® CO2 concentration LCD will display a 30 second count down when power is
applied.
The CO2 analyzer requires up to 30 minutes to fully warm up.
The system may display incorrect CO2 concentration levels during the warm up period.
The WellTracer® unit is calibrated and adjusted at the factory.

START-UP PROCEDURE
The WellTracer® unit should be located on a suitable work surface located in the safe work zone.

Verify field measurements correspond with WinGLUE® well model.
Put the well on test for the duration of the WellTracer® Survey.
Run 100VAC-240VAC at 50-60 Hz to WellTracer unit breaker and receptacle assembly.
Plug WellTracer unit plug into unit breaker and receptacle assembly, after unit is situated.
Electrical
•

WellTracer® unit comes equipped with a standard 200-250V 3 prong plug.
WellTracer® sends standard Switch Socket 16A with each shipment. (Figure 10)

Figure 10 requires a field connection by a qualified
electrical technician.
Cord for field connection not provided.
The R-Stahl 16A Switch Socket will not turn to the on
position unless plug is inserted.
Additional plug may be required to provide 120vac for
laptop.

WellTracer® unit may be grounded at any location, using a ground clamp provided by field
electrical technician. (Figure 9)
WellTracer® power switch is located upon the electrical enclosure door; turn this switch to the
on position to power up unit. (Figure 9 - Item #5)
Plug the WellTracer® unit into 100VAC-240VAC at 50-60 Hz power source. This should be done
as soon as the WellTracer® unit is situated to minimize the idle time while the analyzer warms
up.

Field Connections
NOTE: If using a bleed tank, ensure that the grounding strap is securely attached to the lowest
possible point on the nearest well head.
1. Connect ½ inch valve assembly to ½ inch quick connect on WellTracer® labeled H.P OUTPUT.

1. Connect 1/2 inch High Pressure Waste Outlet valve assembly to 1/2 inch quick connector.

2. Connect 1/2 inch stainless steel hose to free end of ½ inch High Pressure Waste Outlet valve
assembly.
Make certain free end of hose is inserted into bleed tank or other discharge receptacle and secured to
ensure against accidental discharge of well fluids to surroundings.
3. Connect ¼ inch Low Pressure Waste Valve to ¼ inch quick connector on WellTracer® labeled L.P

7. Ensure the swab valve on the well head is closed.
8. Ensure needle valve on top of well head is closed.
If a ball valve is installed in the top of the well head if is recommended that the ball valve be replaced
with a needle valve.
A needle valve helps reduce the amount of produced fluid, especially in high emulsion wells.

1. Remove plug (or cap) from needle valve fitting.
Ensure proper size adapter for connection of Well Head Manifold fitting (FIGURE 10A).
2. Connect ¼ inch hose from H.P INPUT to Well Head Manifold quick connect. (Identified by 3 on

3. Connect the data extension cable from the W.H. terminal connection on the WellTracer® unit to
the WH Manifold connection. On the Front of the Electrical Enclosure.

2. Connect the red tagged data extension cable from the LG terminal connection on WellTracer®

3. Open valve on Gas Lift supply line.
1. Locate a valve on the Lift Gas injection line as close to the well head as possible. A ball valve
is preferred. Some installations have a valve on the casing opposite the Lift Gas injection
line. This is the ideal location for CO2 injection. If this valve does exist, be certain there are
no VR plugs before attempting to inject CO2.
2. Ensure the valve is functional and in the closed position.
3. Carefully remove the plug (or cap) from the valve fitting. Ensure proper size adapter for
connection of Lift Gas Manifold fitting (identified by Figure 15).
4. Connect the LG Manifold (Identified by figure 15) to the Lift Gas Manifold fitting (identified
by Figure 15).
5. Connect ¼ inch stainless steel hose from CO2 Injection Manifold quick connect (identified by
3 on Figure 15) to the Lift Gas Manifold quick connect (identified by 3 on Figure 15). A quick
connect with a cap is supplied with the Lift Gas Manifold to ensure safety while the manifold
is in use without a hose attached.
6. Connect the data extension cable from the LG terminal connection (Lift Gas terminal
connection identified on Electrical Enclosure) on WellTracer® unit to the red tagged Lift Gas
Injection Manifold connection (identified by 3 on Figure 15).
7. Open valve on Gas Lift supply line and ensure no leaks exist at field connections.

Important Information about Field Connections

It is recommended that a fluid level be shot before installing the Lift Gas Manifold. When the
fluid level is established prior to beginning a WellTracer® Survey the lowest lift point possible
can be determined. This may reduce the time required to perform the WellTracer® Survey if
fluid is covering any valves.
While collecting all possible data will result in the best analysis of the WellTracer® Survey, it is
understood that in some instances all data transducers may not be able to be connected due to
field conditions.
When positioning the WellTracer® unit the two most important data collection points are
the Lift Gas Manifold and the CO2 Injection Manifold.
The Lift Gas Manifold will record the lift gas injection pressure and temperature. This data is
useful in troubleshooting any anomalies during analysis.
The CO2 Injection Manifold captures the time that the CO2 is injected into the well and the
duration of the injection. This information can also be captured and noted manually.
When capturing the CO2 injection data manually, precision is of the utmost importance. The
validity of the WellTracer® Survey hinges on the accuracy of the injection time.
All required data can be entered on the site worksheet provided by WinGLUE® for use with
WellTracer®.
Initiate System Flow
1. Open the swab valve on the well head, counting the number of turns until the valve is
completely open.
Counting the number of turns allows the well to be choked back should the well happen to be
slugging or if heavy emulsion is encountered.

6. Slowly open H.P. / L.P S-O valve (Identified by G on Figure 9) and L.P ADJ valve (Identified by F
on Figure 9), adjusting L.P REG (Identified by H on Figure 9) until L.P gauge (System Low
Pressure gauge identified by C on Figure 9) is set to 10 psig and the Flow Rate Meter (identified
by A on Figure 9) is set at 1.5 l/min. 10 psig is the required operating pressure and 1.5 l/min is
the required operating flow rate for the CO2 Analyzer.
7. The L.P ADJ valve and the H.P ADJ S-O valve should be fully open.
8. The ½ inch valve can be used to throttle the flow through the WellTracer® unit to ensure
sufficient pressure is achieved. Normal operations will typically see this valve 25% to 50% open.
9. The CO2 Analyzer should now be sampling the well gasses and the LCD should be displaying
concentration data.

e. Verify that the channels are reporting realistic data. Pressures can be verified
against the analog gauges installed in the respective manifolds. CO2 concentration
can be verified by viewing the LCD display on the WellTracer® unit.
6. The WellTracer® unit is now collecting data for the WellTracer® Survey.
Injecting CO2 into the Well
•
The injection process is performed in two (2) steps, preparing the CO2 cylinder for injection and
injecting the CO2 into the well. The CO2 cylinder may be prepared while the WellTracer® unit is
in its warm up period.
Prepare the CO2 Cylinder
1. Determine the gas lift supply pressure. This may be obtained from the field-mounted gauge or
the Lift Gas Manifold analog gauge. With the current CO2 injection method WellTracer® will not
work with a gas lift supply pressure exceeding 1500 psig.
2. Ensure that the CO2 Injection Manifold has been connected as instructed in Making Field
Connections.
3. Ensure the N2 regulator has been connected as instructed in Making Field Connections.

6. Determine the pressure of the CO2 cylinder by reading the pressure displayed on the gauge
located between the CO2 cylinder and valve B (Figure 19). Typically, the pressure of a 1000 psi
CO2 cylinder will be 800 to 1100 psig.
7. Over pressurize the CO2 cylinder as necessary.
a. The CO2 cylinder will need to provide sufficient pressure to overcome the Gas Lift supply
pressure. This is accomplished by adding nitrogen (N2) to the CO2 cylinder.
b. The CO2 cylinder pressure should be at least 500 psig greater than the Lift Gas supply
pressure. The CO2 cylinder should never be over pressurized to more than 2400 psig.
c. Open the valve on the N2 cylinder.
d. Adjust the regulator on the N2 cylinder to 3000 psig.
e. Slowly open the valve on the N2 regulator to begin flow of N2 into the CO2 cylinder.
f.
Slowly open valve A (Figure 19) and allow the N2 to over pressurize the CO2 cylinder to a
pressure at least 500 psig greater than the Gas Lift supply pressure, but not to exceed
2400 psig.
g. Once the desired pressure has been attained, slowly close valve A (Figure 19). Once
valve A (Figure 19) is closed, close the valve on the N2 regulator and the valve on the N2
cylinder.
8. Place the CO2 cylinder on the scale.
9. Turn on the scale and zero (tare) the scale.

Manifold equalizes with the Gas Lift supply pressure, injecting approximately fifteen (15) to
twenty (20) pounds of CO2 into the well.
4. Once the pressures equalize, quickly close valves B and C (Figure 19) and open valve E (Figure
19). This will allow the Data Logger to clearly identify when CO2 injection ceased.
NOTE: If the CO2 Injection Manifold was not able to be connected to the WellTracer® unit,
notate the time as the valve is closed.
5. Note the amount of CO2 injected, as the weight information is not recorded in any way by the
WellTracer® unit.
6. Close the valve on the CO2 and N2 cylinders to safety.
Disconnect CO2 Manifold Connections
If the steps outlined in the Field Cleaning the Separator section are to be performed, removing the CO2
Injection Manifold (Step 10) may be skipped at this time and performed after the separator has been
cleaned.

Monitoring the WellTracer® Survey
1. The estimated time required to allow the injected CO2 to return to the WellTracer® unit should
be notated on the WellTracer® Site Worksheet prior to arriving at the well.
A. The WellTracer® Site Worksheet should contain the depths of all installed mandrels and
type of hardware installed in each mandrel.
B. The WellTracer® Site Worksheet should contain the estimated travel time to each mandrel
as predicted by the WinGLUE® model.
C. The WellTracer® Site Worksheet should contain the Lifting Mandrel(s) and Deepest Mandrel
numbers.
D. The WellTracer® Site Worksheet should contain the estimated Return Times for the Lifting
Mandrel(s) and the Deepest Mandrel.
E. The WellTracer® Site Worksheet should contain the estimated duration of the WellTracer®
Survey.
F. Field measurements should be entered on the WellTracer® Site Worksheet.

2. The WellTracer® unit should be monitored to ensure the following:

1.3. Ensure no liquid is allowed to enter the CO2 Analyzer card. If any liquid were to enter
the CO2 Analyzer card the sensor will be destroyed and require replacement.
1.4. Monitor the Dual Filter System inside the WellTracer® unit (As seen through unit
window shown on Figure 16).
1. If the currently utilized filter shows signs of liquid absorption, switch to the other
filter and replace the contaminated filter media as instructed in the Maintaining the
Dual Filter System section.
2. If liquid is detected in the Dual Filter System there is a good possibility that the
Separator has become filled with liquid.
i. Fully open the ½ inch valve on the WellTracer® unit to allow any liquids
accumulated in the separator to be discharged.
ii. Readjust the ½ inch valve on the WellTracer® unit to ensure proper flow rate is
achieved.
iii. Monitor the Dual Filter System to ensure no further liquid appears.
iv. If further liquid is introduced into the Dual Filter System, the Separator
may need to be cleaned. Depending on the time estimated for the CO2 to
return to the WellTracer® unit, it may be possible to clean the Separator
without aborting the WellTracer® Survey.
v. See the Maintaining the Separator section for instructions on cleaning the
Separator.
3. When the CO2 returns to the WellTracer® unit the WellTracer® Survey is complete.
A. CO2 concentration levels may be monitored any time during the WellTracer® Survey by
observing the LCD on the WellTracer® unit.
B. The entire WellTracer® survey plot may be viewed at any time by clicking the
button on the WellTracer® Live Plot Control panel (Identified by 3 on Figure 15).
C. The WellTracer® Survey should not be terminated until the CO2 Concentration shows a
clearly evident increased level or sufficient time has elapsed to ensure the CO2 will not be
returning to the WellTracer® unit.

Shut-down Procedure
Once suitable CO2 return results are obtained, the system may be shut down and disconnected.
Terminate Data Acquisition
1. Switch the Data Logger switch (Identified by 5 on Figure 9) to the OFF position.
2. If the Data Logger switch is inadvertently switched to the OFF position during a WellTracer®
Survey, simply switch it back to the ON position.
Terminate System Flow / Remove Field Connections
Fully close the L.P ADJ valve (Identified by F on Figure9).
Completely close the swab valve.
Completely close the valve on the well head where the Well Head Manifold is attached.
Fully open the ½ valve located on the WellTracer® unit. This will allow accumulated pressure to
bleed from the ¼ inch stainless steel hose and the WellTracer® Unit.
5. Disconnect the ¼ inch stainless steel hose from the Well Head Manifold.

21. Repack the WellTracer® unit and accessories for transport.

Extracting the WellTracer® Survey
The WellTracer® data can be extracted from the Data Logger in 2 different manners. The data
file can be extracted from the Data Logger and then later imported into WinGLUE® using the
WellTracer® Import panel or be extracted directly to a WellTracer® Survey in WinGLUE®. If the analysis
of the WellTracer® Survey is to be performed on another computer, extracting the data file from the
Data Logger is the recommended method.
Even when creating the WellTracer® Survey directly the data should be extracted to a data file for
archiving.
Extracting a WellTracer® Data File
1. If open, close the WellTracer® Live Plot Control panel and open the WellTracer® Data Logger
Control panel. Both panels cannot be open at the same time and WinGLUE® will warn you of
such.
2. Input a folder in the Folder box (identified by 3 on Figure 17) or click the

Care and Cleaning of the WellTracer®
Maintaining the Safety Dump
The Safety Dump System is located inside the WellTracer® unit (As shown in Appendix 3) and aids in
preventing well fluids from entering the analyzer card. In the event of fluids filling the filter medium or
the system is being cleaned. (Refer to Appendix 3 for further instructions).
Maintaining the Dual Filter System
The Dual Filter System is located inside the WellTracer® unit (identified by A on Figure 21) and aids in
preventing well fluids from entering the analyzer card.
Isolating a Filter
Occasionally, well fluids may collect in a filter during the course of a WellTracer® Survey. The Dual Filter
System allows the contaminated filter to be isolated and changed without interruption to the
WellTracer® Survey. Once a filter has been isolated, see the Changing the Filter Media section for
further instructions.

Changing the Filter Media
Refer to Figure 21 of Appendix 6 for an exploded view of the filter assembly.
1. If changing the filter media during a WellTracer® Survey, be sure the filter is isolated as outlined
in the Isolating a Filter section.
2. Open the petcock valve (6) to release any retained pressure and loosen the assembly until the
valve fitting is removed.
3. Carefully unscrew and remove the glass housing (4) from the filter assembly (1).
4. Remove the filter retaining plate (5) from the bottom of the filter.
5. Remove the contaminated filter media (3), ensuring that that filter seal O-ring (2) is not lost.
6. If the filter seal O-ring (2) falls out, insert the filter seal O-ring back into the filter assembly.
7. Slide on a new filter media (3).
8. Slide the filter retaining plate (5) back in to position.
9. Screw the glass housing (4) back into the filter assembly (1), ensuring that the filter seal O-ring
(2) is properly positioned to ensure a good seal.
10. Screw the petcock valve assembly (6) on and close the petcock valve.
11. The filter may now be returned to service.
Maintaining the Separator
•
•
When the fluid separator has filled with well fluids to a sufficient level that liquid is detected in
the Dual Filter System, it will be necessary to clean the fluid separator. The fluid separator
should also be cleaned every six (6) to twelve (12) months depending on the frequency the
WellTracer® is used.
If the Dual Filter System is repeatedly exposed to liquid during the WellTracer® Survey, the fluid
separator will require immediate cleaning. Depending on the estimated time for the CO2 to
return from the well, it may be possible to clean the fluid separator without abandoning the
current WellTracer® Survey. The fluid separator can be cleaned in approximately one (1) hour.

WellTracer® unit. If the valve is opened to allow more discharge, ensure that the System Low
Pressure and Flow Rate remain at the proper levels.
Periodically opening the ½ inch valve on the WellTracer® unit fully will allow the fluid separator
to discharge accumulated well fluids. Ensure the valve is closed to the same position after
dumping well fluids from the fluid separator.
Regulating the swab valve will also decrease the amount of well fluids that arrive at the
WellTracer®.
Field Cleaning the Separator Unit
The fluid separator (Identified by 2 on Figure 22) is located inside the WellTracer® unit. The fluid
separator may be blown free of much residual well fluids that have collected in the fluid separator
before leaving the field.
1. After the ¼ inch stainless steel hose is removed from the well head and the well head is secure
and returned to normal operation, connect the ¼ inch stainless steel hose to the CO2 Injection
Manifold (identified by 2 on Figure 19).
2. Ensure that valves A thru E on the CO2 Injection Manifold are closed.
3. Ensure H.P ADJ valve (identified by F on Figure 9) is closed.
4. Ensure L.P REG (identified by I on Figure 9) is turned fully counterclockwise.
5. Ensure L.P ADJ valve (identified by E on Figure 9) is closed.
6. Open the valve on the N2 cylinder.
7. Adjust the N2 regulator to 1000 psig.
8. Open the valve on the N2 regulator.
9. Fully open the ½ inch valve on the WellTracer® unit.
10. Open the H.P ADJ valve (identified by F on Figure 9).
11. Open valves A, B and C on the CO2 Injection Manifold, allowing the N2 to blow retained well
fluids in to the bleed tank or other suitable fluid waste disposal container.
12. Close Valve C.
13. Close the valve on the N2 cylinder.
14. Slowly open Valve E to release built up pressure.
15. Remove ¼ inch stainless steel hose from CO2 Injection Manifold.
16. Remove CO2 Injection Manifold from the CO2 cylinder.

QHSE Overview
The WellTracer® in itself is a relatively safe system to operate. However, the oilfield and/or production
platform environment in which it is to be used has many hazards, which must be addressed while
installing/operating the equipment. The procedures outlined in this document cover most of the hazards
involved, but only in general terms. It is a MUST that the production platform personnel including: Well
Engineers, Operators, Production Supervisors, and HSE Advisors are all consulted early on in the
planning stages for any upcoming WellTracer® Field Trials. The platforms site-specific requirements will
always supersede the (general) Safety requirements outlined here.
Equipment
The following is a list of items that are normally shipped with WellTracer® that could possibly have HSE
issues associated with them.
•

Calibration Gas (Carbon Dioxide & Nitrogen bottles) — these are shipped in the form of
cylinders and hold approximately (1 lbs) of gas each. When transporting these calibration gas
bottles by air, check to make sure all FAA regulations are met.
WellTracer® — none of the equipment/components associated with the WellTracer® are
intrinsically safe or rated for Hazardous Location duty. WellTracer® must be located outside the
hazardous area and in a safe zone. Typically, the “safe zone” is an area at least 10 feet in radius
away from the well head. THE ONSITE OPERATIONS PERSONEL AND PLATFORM ENGINEERS
MUST MAKE THIS DETERMINATION.
Atmospheres
Explosive / hazardous atmospheres are regularly encountered on production platforms both onshore
and offshore. The following gives a few examples of controls that need to be put in place before testing
begins.

Permit to Work — Be sure that operations personnel have reviewed the work areas and
approved all equipment to be used in these areas for the atmospheres involved. Make sure all
signatures have been attained on Permit before proceeding.
Test for (Explosive) Atmospheres with Meter — Have area sniffed by operations meter and
compare readings. Always keep a functioning gas meter next to WellTracer® during testing
operations. Check meter display periodically to ensure its continued safe operation.
Note: A gas meter (sniffer) is not included with WellTracer®. Normally, they are rented
from local vendors.
Test for (H2S) Atmospheres with Meter — Have area sniffed by operations meter and compare
readings. If H2S is detected, get with a local HSE Advisor, as this type work requires specialized
training.
Stop Work — Immediately stop work if any area or local alarms sound that may indicate a gas
release. Check the status of the alarms with local operations personnel.

Venting — The WellTracer® naturally vents from two (2) locations. The Analyzer and Waste
Drum. Safe work distances should be adhered to while working near these potentially explosive
sources. Normally, venting of the system is limited to approximately 100-125 cubic feet per day.
Pressures
Extremely high pressures can be encountered while working with Gas Lift wells. Pressures encountered
can range anywhere from 500- 1500 psi. Extreme caution must be exercised while working with these
pressures!
•
Permit to Work —Be sure that operations personnel have reviewed the work areas and
approved all equipment to be used in these areas for the pressures involved. Make sure all
signatures have been attained on Permit before proceeding.
•
Connection Sequence — Be sure operations personnel have reviewed all the points of
connection and the sequence in which the WellTracer® will be tied into the production system
including: Gas Lift Supply-Manifold ports, Well-Tubing Head Ports, and Well-Casing Ports.
•
Fittings — carefully inspect all fittings and valves to be used. Verify that their pressure ratings
are correct for the application and they are in good working condition. Normally, valves and
fittings located on the well head equipment are not used or inspected daily, so severe corrosion
of the valves and their associated fittings may develop overtime. Valves found in these
conditions should not be used as they pose a potential serious risk for personal injury. Extreme
caution should be exercised when tightening any valves or fittings on a pressurized system.
•
Inspections / Monitoring — during testing operations, it is a good practice to make a
walkthrough of the system checking for leaks that may have developed.
•
Securing Gas Cylinders — Gas cylinders should be secured at all times to prevent accidental tip
over which could result in extremely high pressures being released.
Temperatures
Normally, extreme temperatures will not be encountered while testing using the WellTracer®. However,
the following should be completed before proceeding with each test.

Permit to Work — Be sure that operations personnel have reviewed the work areas and
approved all equipment to be used in these areas for the temperatures that will be
encountered. Make sure all signatures have been attained on Permit before proceeding.

Environmental
There are two environmental issues associated with operating the WellTracer®.

The first is a fluid leak or spill from the container that is being used to catch the waste fluids. If
this condition was to develop, immediately notify the on-site operations personnel and follow
their procedure for clean up and reporting.
Secondly, venting to the atmosphere. Typically, this system generates very low amounts of vent
gas (approximately 100-125 cubic feet per day). However, onsite operation personnel should be
made aware of the amount of vented gas so that they can be recorded and reported to the
proper agency.
Labeling — Ensure all site procedures for labeling waste containers and drums used during
WellTracer® Surveys are followed.
WellTracer® Repair
As with any device, parts in the WellTracer® can stop working over time or environmental issues can
cause damage to internal components. How WellTracer® is repaired varies from each installation and
how the service was procured. In some instances, only access to replacement parts will be necessary,
while in other instances AppSmiths will need to repair WellTracer®. Repairs can either be done by
returning WellTracer® to AppSmiths or by arranging an on-site visit.
Obtaining Replacement Parts
Replacement parts for internal components of the WellTracer® may be obtained by contacting
AppSmiths. Please be certain to order the correct replacement parts, as all sales are final on
replacement parts.
Return the WellTracer® for Repair
The WellTracer® may be returned to AppSmiths for repair or maintenance. Please contact AppSmiths to
arrange for service prior to sending WellTracer®.
On-site Service

Dry carbon dioxide can be handled in most common structural materials. Moist carbon dioxide is
generally corrosive by its formation of carbonic acid. For applications with moist Carbon Dioxide, 316,
309 and 310 stainless steels may be used as well as Hastelloy ® A, B, & C, and Monel ®. Ferrous Nickel
alloys are slightly susceptible to corrosion. At normal temperatures, carbon dioxide is compatible with
most plastics and elastomers.
Use only in well-ventilated areas. Carbon dioxide vapor is heavier than air and will accumulate in low
areas.
Valve protection caps must remain in place unless container is secured with valve outlet piped to use
point. Do not drag, slide or roll cylinders. Use a suitable hand truck for cylinder movement. Use a
pressure reducing regulator when connecting cylinder to lower pressure (<3000 psig) piping or systems.
Do not heat cylinder by any means to increase the discharge rate of product from the cylinder. Use a
check valve or trap in the discharge line to prevent hazardous back flow into the system.
Protect cylinders from physical damage. Store in cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from heavily
trafficked areas and emergency exits. Do not allow the temperature where cylinders are stored to

Cylinders should be stored upright and firmly secured to prevent falling or being knocked over. Full and
empty cylinders should be segregated. Use a "first in-first out" inventory system to prevent full cylinders

The Safety Dump operates by allowing gas’s to flow freely. In the event of an overflow of
liquids, in the event of a overflow the safety dump seals off any potential flow to the flow
meter.

Appendix 9: Data Logger Manual Reset
In the unlikely event that the data logger becomes unresponsive to the commands sent by the
WellTracer® Data Logger Control panel, the Data Logger can be reset manually.
1. Disconnect power from the WellTracer® unit.
2. Unplug the SERIAL (RS-232) cable from the Data Logger.
3. Remove the terminal strip from the Data Logger (identified by 4 on Figure 23) by pulling up on
the terminal strip at the corners.
4. Remove the two (2) nuts securing the Data Logger.
5. Remove the Data Logger from the WellTracer® unit.
6. Remove the four (4) screws from the back of the Data Logger.
7. Remove the Data Logger cover.
8. Remove the batteries from the Data Logger. Keep the batteries out for two (2) minutes.
9. Reinstall the batteries.
10. Replace the Data Logger cover.
11. Replace the four (4) screws in the back of the Data Logger.
12. Replace the Data Logger in the WellTracer® unit.
13. Replace the two (2) nuts securing the Data Logger.
14. Replace the terminal strip in the Data Logger.
15. Plug the SERIAL (RS-232) cable into the Data Logger.
16. Connect power to the WellTracer® unit.
17. Reattempt previous action.

Appendix 12: Verifying Field Data in WinGLUE®
The most important values to verify are Injection (Casing) Pressure, Injection (Lift Gas) Rate and
Injection (Casing) Temperature. These are the factors that most affect the predicted times to the
mandrels for the WellTracer® Survey. The Production (Tubing Head) Pressure and Oil/Water Production
Rates should also be verified.
1. Contact the well operator to get the most current values from the SCADA system or from
instrumentation at the well head.
2. Compare the values to those entered on the WellTracer® Site Worksheet.
3. If the values match or are reasonably close, no further action is required. If the values are not
reasonably close, run WinGLUE®.
4. Open the Well Test panel (Figure 24) by clicking the
Diagram or via the menu (Data Measurements Well Test).
5. Enter the values into the Calib. Value column of the Well Test.
6. Click the Apply button.

8. Enter the measured Surface Injection Temperature in the proper location.
