RB Chemistry - Denny CCL Liquid: But is it Water?? Water Testing Your task is to develop and perform a number of lab tests (the more the better) that can be used to support the suspicion (hypothesis, if you will) that a container of clear, colorless liquid provided to you is water. The data you obtain from these tests will be used to support one of the following statements: The liquid is water The liquid is not water The liquid may be water In addition to the equipment in the lab, you will also have the following available to you: Electronic Balance Thermometer Litmus Paper (red and blue) pH paper Sodium Chloride (salt) Because you do not know what the liquid is, do not touch it (or taste it, obviously). If you get any of the liquid on your skin, immediately wash the area with soap and water. In preparing for this lab, it might be a good idea to list all of the things you know about water. Which of these can you test for using the available equipment? Which of these properties are unique to water and which are shared by other substances? Come to class with a plan!
