CHEM 111 – General Chemistry 1 Mid-term Examination 1 Study Guide Mid-term Examination 1 will be given during the scheduled class period on Friday Sept 16 Examination Coverage: Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 Chapter 1: Chemistry and Measurement Know how to: Classify physical vs. chemical changes/properties Classify substances as atoms, elements, molecules or compounds Interpret and convert between values in scientific notation vs. standard format Report measurements as a number with a unit Distinguish between precision and accuracy Tell which digit is uncertain in a measurement Count and use significant digits in calculations Define exact numbers Define conversion factors and be able to determine conversion factors appropriately Convert between different units of measurement (a table of the metric prefixes will be provided) Perform dimensional analysis calculations, including density Chapter 2: Atoms, Molecules, and Ions Know how to: Explain Dalton’s Atomic Theory Identify the major features of the 3 subatomic particles (where they are found in an atom, relative masses, charge) Count protons, neutrons and electrons in both neutral atoms and charged ions Write nuclide symbols ( AZElement symbol) for different isotopes of an element; where A is the mass number and Z is the atomic number Identify the difference between different elements, isotopes and ions Calculate atomic mass from information about relative abundance of isotopes Identify major groups on the periodic table (alkali metals, halogens, metals, etc.) Locate metals, metalloids and non-metals on the periodic table Distinguish between molecular and ionic compounds Determine the formula of ionic compounds based on their constituent ions Balance a chemical reaction A periodic table and any relevant constants and equations will be provided. You must bring your own calculator (these cannot be shared).
