TEACHER ASKS:
What is your idea of VUCA world?
The concept of VUCA is clearly manifested in survival. No
matter how VUCA your situation is you are surviving in this
world. The unchanging values like positivity, self-respect,
perseverance and flexibility are necessary in the VUCA world for
us to survive.
Values are passing from culture to culture, from
generation to generation. However, in this modern time, it is
claimed by scientist that change in the society has been
happening in a phase they have never seen before. Everything
can change in just a snap. This is what we call the VUCA world.
Group Work. Distribute tasks for each group by kit. Give the
groups 10 minutes to prepare for their presentation. Call two
representatives to present their group work.
Group 1. Identify the social issue shown in each picture. What is
your opinion about these social issues in relation to VUCA
world?

CONCEPT
Volatility – refers to the speed of change in an industry, market,
or the world in general. The more volatile the world is, the more
and faster things change.
Uncertainty – refers to the extent to which we can’t confidently
predict the future. Part of uncertainty is perceived and associated
with people’s inability to understand what is going on. Truly
uncertain environments are those that don’t allow any prediction.
The more uncertain the world is, the harder it is to predict.
Complexity – refers to the number of factors that we need to take
into account, their variety and the relationships between them.
The more factors, the greater their variety and the more they are
interconnected, the more complex an environment is. Under high
complexity, it is impossible to fully analyze the environment and
come to rational conclusions. The more complex the world is, the
harder it is to analyze.
Ambiguity – refers to a lack of clarity about how to interpret
something. A situation is ambiguous, for example, when
information is incomplete, contradicting, or too inaccurate to draw
conclusions. More generally it refers to fuzziness and vagueness
in ideas and terminology. The more ambiguous the world is, the
harder it is to interpret.
HISTORY
First used in 1987, VUCA is an acronym based on the leadership
theories of Warren Bennis and Burt Nanus, that stands for
volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity. In VUCA World,
the most important thing is to anticipate the future and strengthen
cooperation to come up with better solutions to problems and
challenges.
OVERCOMING VUCA
The work of Dr. Warner Burke and his research colleagues at
Columbia University provides us scientific data that learning
agility (ability to be flexible and be open to change and thrive on
new experiences) is made up of NINE DIMENSIONS or
BEHAVIOR PATTERNS. They include:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
Flexibility – willingness to try new things
Speed – rapidly grasping new ideas
Experimenting – testing out new ideas
Performance Risk -taking – taking on challenges
Interpersonal Risk – Taking - asking others for help
Collaborating – leveraging the skills of others
Information Gathering – increasing your knowledge
