Background Information for Learners
Literature can be a vehicle towards understanding culture, values, and
customs that are relevant to the society that we are living in. Most of the time, a
literary piece contains themes that creatively depicts the ways of society. This is
often reflected in the character’s adventures and resolution that he or she comes up
with at the end of the story. Literature also paves the way in establishing
unchanging values modelled by classical examples both in history and
literature. This creates a standard of moral thoughts and actions whatever are
the changes in the value system of the world
Many literary pieces in Anglo-American Literature reflect
perennial values and beliefs that are still accepted today. There are also stories of
hope rising against discrimination, stories of love conquering all odds, faith in
humanity in this constantly changing world. These literary pieces emphasize the
importance of the value system in a person for this shapes his future
VUCA is an acronym that stands for volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and
ambiguity, a combination of qualities that, taken together, characterize the nature of
some difficult conditions and situations.
Values is a person's principles or standards of behavior;
one's judgment of what is important in life.

Uncertainty. – the lack of predictability, the prospect for surprise, and a sense
of awareness and understanding of issues and events
Introduction
Literature is a blueprint of human society for it embodies its
culture, beliefs and traditions and even its successes and failures. It
serves as a reflection of reality, a product of art, and a window to an
ideology.
Literature provides us with information, pleasure,
entertainment and a sense of history. But beyond these dimensions
lie its transcendental significance its ability to portray human values
and characters necessary in responding to challenging situations.
Indeed, literature is a powerful medium by which these values and
characters are molded, nurtured, strengthened and shared. The
works of Plato, Socrates, and Aristotle (the most famous Greek
philosophers) contain virtues that promote perfection to a society if
only human beings have the willingness to uphold and practice
them.
In these trying times of our life, we are confronted with difficult
and tough situations. They challenge us to be more collectively
vigilant, creative, resourceful, forbearing, and critical-minded to be
able to make the right decisions and do the right actions to overcome
them.
This module contains reading selections which aim to develop
and instill in you the positive universal values to live by in this volatile,
uncertain, complex and ambiguous world.
It is hoped that this material will find a place in your heart
and be able to empower you in the midst of present challenges.
What is literature in a VUCA world?
VUCA is an acronym which stands for volatile (fast- paced),
uncertain(unpredictable), complex(complicated) and ambiguous(unclear). These four
qualities when combined typify difficult conditions and unimaginable situations. The
term VUCA was first used in military education and later adopted in many industries
and businesses. Eventually, authors incorporate VUCA in their writings and readers
begin to analyze such.
The situation in a VUCA appears tough and undeniably challenging but the role
of literature is to instill unchanging values no matter what the situation is.
The learners will do a walkthrough of the lesson expectations.
The teacher informs the students the following objectives of the lesson:
1. explain the concept of VUCA and its foundation
2. demonstrate comprehension of the selected literary piece
3. integrate the concept of VUCA in literature in connection to social
issues
4. identify unchanging values of the characters which help them overcome challenges
Unchanging Values in the VUCA World

First used in 1987, VUCA is an acronym based on the leadership theories of Warren
Bennis and Burt Nanus, that stands for volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and
ambiguity. In a VUCA world, the most important thing is to anticipate the future and
strengthen cooperation to come up with better solutions to problems and challenges.

Literature provides us with a range of exposure and experiences that may open doors
to understanding these unchanging values amid the fast-paced VUCA
world.Literature indeed reflects the society, its good values, and its ills. In its
corrective function, literature mirrors the ills of the society with a view of realizing
its mistakes and making amendments. It also projects the virtues or good values in
the society for people to emulate (Benjamin, 2016).
