The Advantage of Multilingualism in Intellectual
Proficiency
“Multilingualism, as the vehicle of a new linguistic dispensation, plays a central role in
it. We apply the metaphor ‘edge’ to explore the way multiple languages are
deployed in, and intensively shape, the postmodern world. “Stated by Aronin et al.,
2016 in Spacetimes of Multilingualism. Having an ability to memorize and understand
multiple languages can be a huge gap to everyone since their brain is different to
others. From ancient times until nowadays, it is considered as an advantage not only
in academics but also in the working field. The cognitive skills of a multilingual can
enhance since they are being able to communicate and blend into different
nationalities as well as expanding their perspectives because language is also
incorporated with the culture. Multilingualism defined as a condition of being able to
learn, write, read and understand several languages by a person or certain group of
people living in geographical area. There are some countries that have been able to
speak various of language depending on what region or state they are residing. This
condition is somehow related to polyglotism in because of the language. Henceforth,
studies shows that multilingualism can make someone’s brain stronger because it
contains high substance of gray matter that has the most amount of brain neurons
and synapses.
All throughout the years, verbal and non-verbal language passed from generations
and generations. Even from colonized countries, their language was also derived by
the conquerors to the point that the native and colonial language are combined
together in some regions of their country. For instance, Philippines is one of the
countries that had been colonized for 333 years and even pre-historic times, this
country already have several forms of language used in different cases such as in
administration and meditation, words may not be the vernacular of the commoners
or civilians because it was expressed differently yet they can understand the message
in some extent even though they cannot apply it on their communication this. Hence,

receptive multilingualism can be practiced by people although it doesn’t need to
perfect. After the Spaniards came and colonized Philippines, their native language,
Spanish was imposed during the times when priests taught the ancestors back then.
And now, in some parts of this country uses Spanish to communicate also there are
Filipino words derived from Spanish. To sum up, Philippines is considered as multilingual
nation.
Language plays a huge role in a certain country; it forms and evolve depends on
the history and its culture. In addition, politics can affect the language by declaring
the official ones even though they are linguistically diverse. Based on World Atlas
(2017) Russia ranked first on the most multilingual countries in the world, they officially
have 24 languages across all republic. Historically, their language emerged by the
10th century which is divided into three subgroups: western, southern, and eastern. In
the Slavic language family, Russian and the other language is part of East-Slavic
subgroup rooted in Indo-European family.
Their official languages are Buryat, Altay, Tyvan, Khakas, Sakha, Adygean, Bashkir,
Ingush, Kabardian, Balkar, Tatar, Kalmyk, Abaza, Cherkess, Karachay, Nogai, Mari,
Mordvin, Komi, Ossetian, Udmurt, Chechen, Chuvash, and Russian. Considering that
they may still have other unregistered languages, having multiple forms that came
from Cyrillic alphabet can be a huge asset, it may sound difficult but learning and
understanding alphabet that is closely based in Greek is definitely worth it.
Next on the list is India, ranked second with having 23 official languages in a row.
