This is a summary of the journal “The COVID-19 Pandemic through the Lens of Education in the Philippines: The New Normal” by Jose Z. Tria In the journal, the author began by addressing the current health conditions concerning the general public which is the recent COVID-19 pandemic. The current pandemic has disrupted almost all sectors resulting in severe impacts and effects to human activities worldwide. It is cited in the study that most countries around the world had to temporarily close educational institutions affecting more than 1.2 billion learners worldwide with more than 28 million learners in the Philippines. An area of focus for the author was the different course of actions in approaching the problems, issues, and implications that are arising and will arise as a result of COVID-19 pandemic. The difficulties set by the current global issue is not only faced by just one country but the world as a whole. As a result of the studies conducted by different countries, various answers have been presented and the new norm that served as the primary solution is the shifting of physical classes to online classes. The author emphasized several points in his journal that must be taken into consideration when approaching and implementing a different method towards a rather familiar yet uncommon system – online learning. The strengthening of online platforms is one of the key aspects that the author has emphasized as its importance is essential in adapting towards online learning. Another fundamental aspect highlighted by the author is the integration of health education into courses and subjects in every level of education as the ongoing pandemic is evident today with no signs of slowing down. The author concludes by stressing the importance of grasping the opportunities and challenges posed by the pandemic which should be taken in a serious and systematical manner in order to provide quality education even under difficult situations. What have I learned from the journal? - The article discussed about the underlying and distinct factors affecting the educational sector in this global pandemic. In a perspective of a teacher, understanding the different approaches in facing the challenges and problems imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic is of utmost importance. Not only does require immediate attention but also thorough preparation towards the shifting back from online classes to physical classes as now that the cases have settled calmly. Whether be it physical classes or online classes, adapting to the new norm should be carried out meticulously. Therefore, even with the current situation, quality education must and should still be implanted regardless of the mode of learning. How will I apply what I learned in my class? - From what I have learned from this journal, implementing, and adapting to the new norm must be given of importance. When it comes to online classes, collaboration with different sectors is essential at these times. On the other hand, returning back to physical classes also requires attention as the global pandemic is still evident regarding of the fall of cases. This implies that certain measures must be take into account such as social distancing and the use of mask when returning back to physical classes, and strengthening online learning platforms and lastly, the integration of health education into subjects and courses in every level of education,
