Common vs. Proper
• Common nouns name non-specific person, place,
things, or ideas.
• Examples: dog, house, ocean, state, man
• Proper nouns name a SPECIFIC person, place, things,
or ideas. Proper nouns must be capitalized.
• Examples: Atlantic Ocean, Louisiana, Walt Disney,
Empire State Building
Before We Practice….
1. Underneath your notes, label a new section as “PRACTICE”.
2. Copy down the nouns onto your loose leaf.
3. Follow the directions listed on the slide with the practice
material.
4. Ball Review- Instead of calling on students to answer the
questions, we will be answering by ball toss.
5. If you would like to answer, raise your hand. I will start by tossing
the basketball to the first person, and they will answer
accordingly.
6. After they answer, you will raise your hand and they will toss the
ball to the next person.
7. Remember, we are TOSSING THE BALL, not throwing it across the
room.

determine if they are common or proper.
