An Analysis of the Different Views of Rizal and Morga
Our country, The Philippines is well known for having a lot of beliefs that we still believe
until now. Many of us were baffled by our history, and until now, some of us did not
clearly understand the truth. Morga's viewpoint in pre-colonial Filipino were most bluff, in
this case, Rizal came out to annotate the historical statements made by Morga.
When comparing Morga's and Rizal's perspectives on pre-colonial Filipino culture, it is
clear that most of Morga's assertions in the book Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas were
inaccurate and did not reflect the true and correct traditions and cultures of the
Philippines. Rizal then came forward to comment on the book in order to correct
Morga's errors. José Rizal bemoaned the fact that he was raised without being aware of
our colonial history. He consequently felt that he lacked both a voice and the legitimacy
to discuss things he was ignorant of. You can bet that the majority of his peers shared
this sentiment. As was to be predicted, Morga was critical of the government structure,
which instead barely functioned because there were no strong individuals in charge of
the several settlements, the majority of which were coastal and each with their own sets
of leaders. Rizal maintained that it was preferable that way because there was no need
for the communities to be subject to a single monarch who didn't even reside among
them and wasn't aware of their needs and issues.
The social structure of the indigenous captivated Morga; he discussed their ancestry,
differences, privileges of social classes, upward and downward social mobility, and
inheritance of positions and titles. As a conclusion, there is a lot of history distortion to
the book Sucecos de la Islas Filipinas, however it was corrected by Rizal in the latter.
