RIZAL'S YEARS AT THE ATENEO DE MANILA 1872- after the martyrdom of GOMBURZA -Rizal went to Ateneo municipal which later become Ateneo de manila Ateneo de manila- was being managed by the Jesuits in manila. - he studied here for five years and obtained a Bachelor of arts degree - During his first year he understood Spanish but yet he doesn’t speak fluently. -he became the "emperor" of his class for his excellent grades. March 1873- end of the school year and decided to returned in Calamba - he visited his mother who’s in prison During his 2nd year- Rizal had a prophecy that his mother would freed and during his 3rd year his mother is released from prison -Rizal read the “Travels in the Philippines” by Dr. Feodor Jagor a German scientist traveler. 4rth year- he became interno in his class Fr. Francisco de Paula Sanchezprofessor of Rizal - inspired him to study hard and to write a poetry. 1877- his schooling ended - graduated with a highest honor Rizal who’s 16 years old experience his first romance Segunda Katigbak - a pretty 14 years old Batanguena from Lipa but she was been engaged to Manuel Luz her townmate Rizal remarkable achievements at the Ateneo de manila are: 1. Father rector consulted him to choose. * Finishes surveying course in Ateneo (1878) he took the vocational course leading to be the little of Perito agrimensor (expert surveyor) age of 17 he passed the final exam in the surveying course * Romances with other girls Rizal had ample time for love he was romantic dreamer who liked to sip the "nectar of love" his first love made him wiser in ways of romance Segunda Katigbakyoung, a woman in Calamba - his memoirs he called her simply miss L -miss L describing her as "fair with seductive and attractive eyes" Leonor Valenzuela charming girl who’s courted by Rizal -she’s a tall girl almost as tall as Jose himself and had a bearing. -Jose sent her love notes written in invisible ink, consisted of common table salt and water. Leonor Riverahis cousin from camiling born on april 11, 1867 -she was a frail beautiful girl tender as budding flower with kindly wistful eyes. * Victim of Spanish officers Brutality - in Calamba in 1890, Jose was walking on the street he was whipped out a sword on his back by the guardia civil. March 21 1887- Letter to Blumentritt To the Filipino Youth(1879) Liceo Artistico- Literario ( ArtisticLiterary Lyceum)of manila held a literary contest. Rizal who was then 18yrs old submitted his poem entitled " A la Juventud Filipina (to the Filipino youth) He won the first price which is a silver pen, feather shaped and decorated with a gold ribbon. The council of the Gods (1880) Jose inspired his poetical triumph entitled El Consejo de Los Dioses (the council of the Gods) he got the prize which is a gold ring on whivh was engraved the bust of Cervantes. Champion of Filipino Students Companions of Jehu - called the members of secret student organization Jose was the chief called companerismo (comradeship) Rizals Unhappy days at UST he was unhappy because: 1) the dominician professors were hostile to him 2) the Filipino students were racially discriminated 3) the method of instruction was obsolete and repressive El Filibusterismo his novel describe how Filipino students were humiliated and insulted by their dominisians professor he related in Chapter XII of his novel entitled The Class in Physics "science subject was taught without laboratory experiments he failed to win high scholastics honors. Decisicion to study Board Jose decided to study in Spain Antonio, Rivera, encouraged him to go abroad and Paciano and Saturnina Jose did not seek his parents’ permission and blessing to go abroad especially to his mother and also Leonor. EDUCATION AT UNIBERSIDAD CENTRAL de MADRID SPAIN Rizal finished of his medical course he predicted that his decision to study abroad would not favored by his parents he had also secret mission aside from studying abroad. June 1884-he awarded the degree of Licentiate in medicine and parsed the degree of Doctor medicine June 19 1885 - degree of Licentiate in Philosophy letters - his 24th birthday become professor of humanities and became full pledged physician.
