ANG GULAYAN NG KABATAAN – is one of the livelihood programs of Sangguniang
Kabataan of Barangay Salvacion, Monkayo, Davao de Oro in partnership with 4-H Club
Organization that come together to build a common livelihood for the entire community, that is
resiliency in the making amid difficulties of the pandemic. Also, the Gulayan ng Kabataan is not
just a mere garden but a social activity brought about by the ‘’BAYANIHAN’’ spirit as it fosters
responsibility and a sense of belongingness during this time of health crisis.
This project is to promote organic vegetable farming among barangay residents, to ensure the
production of vegetables that are healthier than the usual vegetables being sold in the market; to
increase awareness to the constituents/residents through their involvement in producing crops and
vegetables within their respective gardens and/or available areas. And, this garden is plotted with
eco-bricks that were made from plastic waste materials collected by the constituents of the
barangay to lessen the garbage’s in every corner of the community.
In addition, the said organizatios can do so much in combatting malnutrition and hunger and we,
ourselves are also playing our part as a model of the community and as a hope of the nation.
This project is intended to widen awareness and strengthen the program of vegetable gardens and
hoping that more constituents would engage in simple gardening. Not just only to promote a
healthy way of living but also to assist in the production of vegetables within their respective
homes. In line with this, the Sangguniang Kabataan Officials of Barangay Salvacion, Monkayo,
Davao de Oro are continuing the development of the garden to fight against poverty, because we
realized that poverty is one of the main reasons why families are suffering hunger and
malnutrition, especially among the Filipino children.
The Gulayan Ng Kabataan is a very helpful in these trying times because we believed that through
this project, we can do so much in combatting malnutrition and hunger, especially the children and
youth who have encountered a lack of nutrition and loss of the immune system. Also, it helps to
address concerns on the sustainability of food supply in our community and encouraged the youth
to engage in backyard gardening in their respective homes. The Gulayan ng Kabataan project
enables the youth to develop their skills in growing crops and improving their resourcefulness by
utilizing recyclable and reusable plastic waste materials to plot as eco-bricks in gardening. Further,
we have to understand the importance of planting and producing crops as a source of food in the
community because if we rely on the vegetables sold in the market it will not be suitable for our
body to take in. Through this project, we can share the nutrition and lessen the rapid growth of
malnutrition and hunger in our community, and helps the young people in the villages to sustain
food availability for the residents’ daily consumption, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The beneficiaries are the Out-of-school Youth, Women’s Organization, Youth Volunteers, and
the residents of the barangay. As per recorded, there are 27 Out-of-school Youth, 40 members of
the Women’s Organization, 30 Youth Volunteers, and 23 families of the barangay. They benefit
through free vegetables for daily consumption.
By means of implementation, first, we conducted a Katipunan ng Kabataan (KK) meeting
wherein we proposed and delivered the project to implement well. The Gulayan ng Kabataan is
composed of SK Officials, PYAP members, Sulong-Dunong Scholars, Purok Youth
Organization, Out-of-school Youth, Youth Volunteers, Youth Religious Sectors, IP Youth
Organization, Women’s Organization, and Monkayo College of Arts Sciences and Technology
SSG Members are involved in doing and nurturing this project.
The SK Officials are - the facilitator/Overseer, Purok Youth Organization, Youth Volunteers,
Youth Religious Sectors, IP Youth Organization, Women’s Organization – are workers, and
Monkayo College of Arts Sciences and Technology (SSG Members) are the supporters and
provider of seedlings.
This project a continuing program because we believed that this will benefit the people of
Barangay Salvacion for their daily consumption and also it can be generating income through
this project.
We planned to widen the areas so that more vegetables will be planted. The more vegetables
planted; the more people will benefit.
