Think about: What is tourism? Why do people visit certain places? Stick your post-it on the whiteboard for sir to review. First, watch this video. As you watch try to list: 1-2 good things that tourism brings to a country, and 1-2 bad things that tourism brings to a country. Benefits Tourism Problems In your books draw this table. In your ‘table teams’, organise the cards into two piles: 1. The benefits that tourism brings a country, and 2. The problems tourism brings. Write these into your table. Benefits Tourism Problems Tourism Benefits Problems More jobs for people. This can make local people richer and able to afford new things. Popular locations are overcrowded and spoilt. Tourism improves the economy – there is more income from selling goods i.e. ice-cream. There is a demand for locally produced food, which means that local farmers and producers become wealthier. People can experience different languages and cultures. There are job opportunities in the country where tourists come from. Tourism encourages the government to spend money to improve local facilities i.e. toilets, roads and schools. Only the lowest paid tourist jobs are given go to local people. Tourists produce loads of waste – rubbish, pollution from cars and waste of water. The cost to clear up goes onto local people. Tourism means that people from abroad move to live in the area. This makes house prices to rise. Local people often cannot afford these prices. Jobs are seasonal so there is no work for much of the year. Tourism?
