Introductory Message
Welcome to English - Grade 7!
The Supplementary Learning Material is a product of the collaborative efforts
of the Schools Division of Iloilo and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas
through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults)
in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education
Curriculum.
The Supplementary Learning Material is self-directed instructional materials
aimed to guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time
using the contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners
in acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.
For the learning facilitator:
The Supplementary Learning Material will help you facilitate the teaching-learning
activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with minimal or no
face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will be made available to the learners
with the references/links to ease the independent learning.
For the learner:
The Supplementary Learning Material is developed to help you continue learning
even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you with meaningful and
engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active learner, carefully read and
understand the instructions then perform the activities and answer the assessments. This
will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

Analogy
BEGIN
As a grade 7 learner, it is important to
know the concept of analogy that will guide you
in determining the resemblance of one object
to another in certain aspects. It will also test
you in discovering the relationship between
words and finding the required pair of words
which is most similar to the relationship.
In this learning kit, you will supply words
or expressions that complete an analogy.
Concrete examples and important details are
presented that will serve as basis for the new
learning. This material also includes
meaningful tasks that will deepen your
understanding of the concept.
Get ready for your adventure.

Grade 7-English
Competency: Supply other words or expressions that complete an analogy (EN7V-IV-c-23.1)
KEEP THIS IN MIND
This time you will learn the definition and types
of analogy and its examples. Read and understand
the information provided to help you learn how to
supply other words or expressions that complete an
analogy.
Analogy
It is a comparison of two otherwise unlike things based on resemblance of a
particular aspect.1
Analogy functions to describe or explain one thing by examining its similarities
with another thing. The two things may be very dissimilar and the analogy forces the
reader or listener to understand the connection between them. On the other hand, the
analogy could provide a comparison between two very similar things, one of which
might be more obscure or confusing; the analogy provides a way for a reader or
listener to understand the more obscure thing by picturing the more common thing. 2
It aims to test the candidate’s ability to discover the relationship between the
question pair and then to find the required pair of words which is most similar to that
relationship.
Examples: 1. TREE : LEAF :: FLOWER : PETAL
•
This analogy is read aloud as: TREE is to LEAF as FLOWER is to PETAL.
•
This analogy highlights the relationship between the whole (a TREE and a
FLOWER) and its parts (a LEAF and a PETAL). On test of logic, one portion
of the analogy is left blank and students are left to choose an answer that
makes sense to complete the comparison.
Seven Common Types of Analogy
1. Synonyms – created between two words, when they convey the same
meaning.
Examples:
1. begin : start :: end : finish
2. small : tiny :: big : huge
3. yell : shout :: talk : speak

Grade 7-English
Competency: Supply other words or expressions that complete an analogy (EN7V-IV-c-23.1)
2. Antonyms – created between two words with opposite meaning.
Examples:
1. first : last :: begin : end
2. poor : rich :: sick : healthy
3. front : back :: left : right
3. Worker and Working Place – when word of the pair represents the working
professional and the other word of the pair
their working place.
Examples:
1. teacher : school :: lawyer : court
2. doctor : hospital :: farmer : field
3. chef : kitchen :: worker : factory
4. Tool and Action – when one word of the pair represents the tool and the
other word gives its function/action, then it is called tool
and action relationship.
Examples:
1. needle : sew :: spoon : feed
2. pen : write :: paintbrush : paint
3. chisel : carve :: microscope : magnify
5. Animal and Movement – when one of the pairs give the animal name and
other word for pair represents their movement,
then it is called animal and movement relationship.
Examples:
1. bird : fly :: duck : waddle
2. rabbit : leap :: horse : wallop
3. cock : strut :: lion : prowl
6. Country and Capital – when one word of the pair gives the capital of the
country or of a certain location given in other word of
the pair, then it is called country and capital
relationship.
Examples:
1. Philippine : Manila :: Japan : Tokyo
2. Region VI : Western Visayas ::Region VII :Central
Visayas
3. South Korea : Seoul :: North Korea : Pyongyang
7. Part and Whole – when one word of the pair represents a single part of the
whole object given in other word of the pair, then it is
called part and whole relationship.
Examples:
1. toe : foot :: petal : flower
2. finger : hand :: leaf : tree
3. lungs : respiratory system :: brain : nervous system

Analogy in Literature
As the definition of analogy includes all types of comparisons, the following list of
literary devices all qualify as analogies:
1. Metaphor - A metaphor compares two subjects without any connecting words
such as “like” or “as.” Metaphors are considered a strong form of
analogy as they assert that one thing is another.
Example:
The exam will be a car crash if you fall behind.
Argument is war.
Life is a roller coaster with lots of ups and downs.
2. Simile - A simile is a comparison between two things using the connecting
words “like” or “as.” Not quite as strong of a comparison as metaphor,
simile still requires the reader to understand the similarities between
the two things and make new cognitive links.
Example:
Life is like a race.
She is as quick as a cat.
Chemistry class is like watching a foreign movie without
the subtitles.4
How to Answer Analogy
Example:
1. SHEEP : LAMB :: ________ : _______
A. sparrow : finch
B. cub : bear
C. horse : foal
D. feather : tail
Correct answer: C. horse : foal

14
Grade 7-English
Competency: Supply other words or expressions that complete an analogy (EN7V-IV-c-23.1)
1. Analyze the first pair of word.
Identify the relationship between the first set of items. The
example shows the relationship between a sheep and a lamb is that of
a grown animal to a young animal.
2. Express the analogy in sentence or question form.
The example could be expressed as “A sheep is a grown lamb,
just as _______ is a grown ________.” Fill in the blanks with the
possible answers to see which makes sense. For instance, if you fill in
the sentence with answer B, you find that the order of the terms is
reversed. A bear is older than a cub, not the other way around.
3. Find the best available choice to complete the analogy.
For a multiple-choice analogy, choose the pair of words that
shares the same relationship as the pair given in the question. For a fillin-the-blank analogy, select a word or words that have the same
relationship existing between the first pair of words. 5
Activity 5
SIMILE VS METAPHOR
Directions: Identify what type of analogy are the following statements. Write M if it is
a metaphor and S if it is a simile. Write your answers in your English

3. Mrs. Santos is like an angel in her students’ eyes.
4. He’s a walking encyclopedia.
5. Ana is a shining star in her class.
6. Father is as strong as a carabao.
7. Philippines is the pearl of the orient seas.
8. The mahogany tree is as tall as a giraffe.
9. The sampaguita flower smells like perfume.
10. My mom is a guardian angel to me.
