My ideas about chemistry so far… What are the states of matter? Describe them. How do states of matter change? The states of matter are solid liquid and gas. Molecules in a solid are tightly packed so that they retain a certain shape. Furthermore, molecules in a liquid are packed loosely so they do not retain a certain shape by themselves. Liquids normally retain the shape of a “container” that they are “poured” in. In addition, molecules in a gas float around. They do not have a shape and can float freely around. There are many ways that states can change. For example, most solids become a liquid when they are heated to a certain point. This is known as the melting point. Some solids melting point are below zero. Furthermore, most liquids evaporate into vapour at their boiling point. This then becomes a gas. In addition, gases condense into liquid qhen they are cooled. Liquids become solids for example water becomes ice when cooled. (sublimation salt-gas) What are physical changes? What are chemical changes? Why is chemistry useful? Physical Changes are changes that can be “seen” through size, colour, shape, mass, smell, sight and taste. Physical changes are also reversible. Chemical changes are changes (normally cannot be seen directly (like when it happens)). Chemical changes are changes that change the molecular structure of the substance to create a completely new substance. Furthermore, Chemical Changes are irreversible.
