Dickens cleverly presents Scrooge as an isolated character in Stave of ‘A Christmas Carol’. We see this when he tells the charity collectors that he wishes to be ‘left alone’. The adjective ‘alone’ clearly suggests that he wants no company at all, and links to the familiar simile of Scrooge being ‘solitary’ as an oyster. Dickens may have done this to emphasise to the reader that Scrooge is antisocial and does not care for others.
