LORD OF THE FLIES CHAPTER QUESTIONS CHAPTERS 1-3 Question Response 1. How did the boys arrive on the island? What clues (throughout the entire first chapter) are revealed about the setting? They arrived on the island because of a plane crash. The setting is a thick jungle on an island full of rocks with pink granite. 2. Describe Ralph and Piggy’s physical features and reactions to being on the island. Piggy is biggert and wants to strategize while Ralph is skinny and hasn’t hit puberty and wants to explore. 3. How do Ralph and Piggy summon the others on the island? What do they do and what happens? They use a conch they found and blow it. The children follow the sound and meet them on a platform. 4. Describe Jack and the choirboys. Describe their actions and appearance. Jack is in charge of the choirboys, they are wearing different clothes than the other children they have cloaks and hats with silver stars except jacks was gold. They walk like robots in lines. 5. What rules about the conch is made? What significance do you think this will have? The conch is blown when there is a meeting and you can only talk in a meeting if you are holding the conch. This may create fights later on or punishments for those who don’t follow the rules. 6. How does the talk of the “beasties” affect the boys? What are Ralph and Jack’s responses to this? Beasties scare the little boys and make them feel unsafe it instigates mockery from the older children. Jack and Ralph tell the boy snakes are not on the island and he is crazy. 7. How has Jack’s behavior changed? What might this suggest about him? What might this foreshadow? Jack has become friendlier with Ralph and stayed very close with him this foreshadows he may betray him later on. 8. Why do the boys want to start a fire? How do they finally get a fire to start? They want to start a fire to send a signal to passing boats so they can be rescued. They start the fire by using Piggy’s glasses to shine light on the wood to make it spark. 9. How do the majority of the boys act? What might Golding be telling us by this type of behavior? Most of the boys are obedient and rude to each other. They want to be accepted and it tells us that they don’t want to be the odd one out. 10. Describe the two groups that are forming on the island. Who is in charge of each group? In what does each group seem interested? Ralphs group, is focused on the long-term survival. AndJacks group, is more barbaric and wants instant gratification. 11. Who is Simon? Where does he do and Simon is the boy that explores with Jack and what does he do there? Ralph constantly having to hear their bickering. He goes off alone to the middle of the jungle to be alone and sits there and enjoys the quiet. 12. What do you think Simon might represent or symbolize? Explain your answer. Simon symbolizes the innocence of the group of boys, as they seem so rude and tough but honestly all are scared and want to be content.
