LESSON 3
A. Answer the following questions as precisely yet as thorough as possible
1. What do you think are the reasons of the coming of the Spaniards to the East?
I think the reason is to trade some spices in the Spice Islands.
2. Why do you think Magellan befriended the natives?
Because it’s his tactics for him to be easily be trusted by the natives and make them do what he wanted
them to do without questioning it. He wants to spread his religion to the natives by converting them into
Christians and that would be easy if they earn their trust and befriends with them.
3. What was the rile of Christianity in the relationship of Magellan’s troop and the natives?
Magellan arrived in Homonhon and befriended the chieftains of Limasawa. They then introduced
Magellan to Rajah Humabon, the Rajah of Cebu, who was later baptized into Catholicism alongside his wife. In
spite of the warm hospitality that Magellan received from the chieftains he met, Lapu-Lapu strongly opposed
Humabon’s orders, resisted the religion being introduced, and was against Spanish domination.
This led to the battle between the two leaders. Magellan and his army fought against Lapu-Lapu and his native
warriors. Most accounts say Lapu-Lapu killed Magellan during the battle while others say Magellan simply
retreated and his Spanish captains killed him. But one thing’s for sure – Filipinos see Magellan as the villain
and Lapu-Lapu is seen as one of the early heroes who bravely fought against Spanish conquest.

Context
Connections
The First Voyage Around The World by
Antonio Pigafetta was written on board one of the
5 ships that was first to circumnavigate the world
during an expedition that was led by the
Portuguese explorer, Ferdinand Magellan and after
his death during the voyage, by Juan Sebastián
Elcano.
I know Ferdinand Magellan or simply,
Magellan as the explorer sent by Spain who
failed to colonize the area ruled by Chief LapuLapu. Not until I’ve read the account of Atonio
Pigafetta about the first voyage around the
world of Ferdinand Magellan and have a detailed
understandings about what happened in the
history.

Conclusion
The First Voyage around the World is also
a remarkably accurate ethnographic and
geographical account of the circumnavigation, and
one that has earned its reputation among modern
historiographers and students of the early contacts
between Europe and the East Indies. Expertly
presented and handsomely illustrated, this edition
of Pigafetta's classic travelogue is sure to enlighten
new readers and invigorate the imagination as the
story has done since it first appeared.
In conclusion, the work of Antonio
Pigafetta useful in the history of Philippines and
more for the use of entire world. His own
narration about the first world circumnavigation
was one of the greatest achievements in the
history of navy exploration and discovery.
In this narration can be found
descriptions of peoples, countries, goods and
even the languages that were spoken, of which
the seafarer was trying to assemble some brief
glossaries. It also tells the discovery of the
Philippines as an Island and how Magellan and
his troops circumnavigate the globe, and their
braving on the dangerous oceans for 3 years.
Furthermore, it's not a mystery why Magellan is
a famous explorer and how he converted the
natives of the Philippines to Christians.

Set in Seville, Andalusia in 1519, Juan
Sebastián Elcano is a young and irresponsible man
who wants to live as a captain of his little boat, but
due to debts he has with the city's bank, the bank
manager confiscates Elcano's boat and orders the
guards to arrest him as a defaulter. As he tries to
avoid imprisonment, Elcano enlists as part of an
expedition of five ships commanded by Portuguese
explorer Ferdinand Magellan, nicknamed "The
Navigator", in order to arrive in the Molu Islands
ccas to get spices, very valuable to the
ruling Kingdom of Castile. Portuguese
ambassador Álvaro da Costa plots to make the
journey a failure since the Moluccas Islands belong
to the Kingdom of Portugal, and hires Yago as spy
and saboteur to prevent the journey's success.
Unaware of it, Magellan completes the crew of the
five ships: the Trinidad, the San Antonio,
the Concepción, the Santiago, and the Victoria; and
starts the journey. Elcano, hoping to have his own
ship, works as a helmsman for Captain Juan de
Cartagena, who despises him and is suspicious
about Magellan, taking him as a traitor who secretly
works for Portugal. At the same time that Yago
makes some sabotages, Cartagena conspires with
the other captains to get Magellan's secret map to
navigate by unknown lands. But after Magellan died
after a battle with natives of the Saint Lazarus
islands, Elcano is promoted by the crew as the new
leader of the trip. Traveling to the west following
the sun and determined to fulfill the mission, Elcano
finds himself fighting against not only Yago and da
Costa, but time and starvation to make history and
give the first trip around the world.
Elcano & Magellan: The First Voyage
Around the World (Spanish: Elcano y
Magallanes. La primera vuelta al mundo) is a
2019 Spanish computer-animated adventure
film directed by Ángel Alonso and written by
José Antonio Vitoria and Garbiñe Losana. The
film retells the story of 1519
circumnavigation led by Portuguese
explorer Ferdinand Magellan and Spanish
navigator Juan Sebastián Elcano.
Context
Since the film was created in 2019 and was
released in Spain on July 5, during the 500th
anniversary of the expedition. The world is more
different from 500 years ago. What was the film
depicted as is the animated remake of the first
voyage of Magellan around the world.
Connections
Before watching the film I already read
the book of Antionio Pigafteta which is The
first voyage around the world of Magellan.
The film and the writings of Pigafetta is quite
similar as the film is merely based on the
writings of Pigafetta.
The film was controversial in
the Philippines for its inaccurate portrayal of
the Filipino natives, especially Lapulapu, who led
the Battle of Mactan that killed Magellan. At
the 34th Goya Awards, it earned a nomination
for Best Animated Film.
Communication
Conclusion
Since the film is based on the writings of
Antonio Pegafetta it has some knowledgeable
details about the voyage happened 500 years ago but
there are some additional characters and events that
maybe the writer and the director of the film added
to make the film more interesting to the viewers.
The film contributes to history as
commemoration of the expedition 500 years
ago.
