PROPERTIES OF SOAPS AND DETERGENTS
A. Behavior in Soap and Hard Water
Materials: soap, detergent, soft water, hard water, graduated cylinder, test tubes, plastic spoon
1. Measure 8 mL of soft water using the graduated cylinder and transfer to test tube A and B.
2. Measure 8 mL of hard water using the graduated cylinder and transfer to test tube C and D.
3. Place 1/2 spoon of soap to each of test tube A and C and 1/2 spoon of detergent to each of test
tube B and D.
4. Shake the test tubes until bubbles form, if possible, until the soap or detergents are dissolved.
5. Question: Are there test tubes that has white curds formed?
6. Write your observations and answer below for each test tube.

B. Alkalinity
Materials: output of experiment A, universal pH test paper
1. Prepare the materials from experiment A.
2. Dip 1 pH test paper for EACH test tube. Place each of these test paper in a clean and dry
paper.
3. Compare the test pH to the standard to determine the pH.
4. Record the results of the pH below.

C. Emulsifying property
Materials: soap, detergent, hard water, oil, graduated cylinder, test tubes, plastic spoon

Measure 4mL of hard water using the graduated cylinder and transfer to test tube A and B.
Measure 4mL of oil using the graduated cylinder and transfer to test tube A and B.
Place 1/2 spoon of soap to test tube A and 1/2 spoon of detergent to test tube B.

Question: What happen to the oil and water before and after the application of soap and water?
