INDOLENCE OF THE FILIPINOS

"The Indolence of the Filipinos "
Indolence does actually exist everyplace, in the entire world, in all men, since we as a
whole disdain work, as it may be difficult and unproductive. The vindication of Rizal concerning
the Filipinos being industrious and not indolent has been authenticated by Chapter II of his essay
entitled “On the Indolence of the Filipinos.” He contended that the indolence in the Philippines is
a chronic malady but not a hereditary one. The appearance of the Spaniards and the foundation of
its colonial government has not empowered work and exchange among Filipinos with
extraordinary doubt. The Church's incorrect doctrine, which holds that the rich will not go to
heaven added to the mistaken disposition of the Filipinos towards work. As a result, the
perspectives of the Filipinos were enormously impacted by some unacceptable system, and it
fortifies the claim of Rizal that a disease will deteriorate assuming incorrect treatment is given.
And this similarly applies to indolence.
Additionally, Rizal contended that the Spaniards who are indolent as they restricted
physical work and life encompassed by Filipino workers. In actuality, before the appearance of the
Europeans, the Filipinos carried on a functioning trade among themselves as well as with the
adjoining nations. As per Pigafetta, who accompanied Magellan in 1521, on showing up at the first
island of the Philippines, Samar, he saw the civility and thoughtfulness of the Filipino occupants
and their business. Thoroughly, the Filipinos have not forever been what they are, and it has been
seen by every one of the historical professionals in the first years after the revelation of the island.
Consequently, the Filipinos, regardless of the environment and their couple of necessities, are not
indolent human beings in recent times. And, as we will see later, their morals and method of life
were not what is currently attributed to them. In conclusion, the contention of our national hero,
Dr. Jose Rizal, is a defense that Filipinos are not born with indolence but rather industrious. We
should prove to Rizal that the Filipinos he battled for are individuals’ worth battling for.
