What I Need to Know
In the past weeks, you were introduced to the concepts of
research in general, and the difference between quantitative
and qualitative research.
In this WHLP, you will learn the strengths and
weaknesses of Qualitative Research and its purpose.
Moreover, the next challenging task is to think of a
research topic to be proposed.
Often, the initial step in conducting the research is the
most difficult one, but once this is overcome, the next steps
will not be as daunting.
The succeeding lessons will help you get started with
research by determining what topic for research are you
most interested in, and most capable of doing within your
means, the allotted time, and the current situation we are in.
Also, the lessons are aimed at developing your initial
research skills to help you seek for relevant information as
you decide on a topic to research on.
At the end of this week, you are expected to:
1. describes characteristics, strengths, weaknesses, and
kinds of qualitative research (CS_RS11-IIIb-1);
2. Illustrates the importance of qualitative research across
fields (CS_RS-IIIb-2); and,
3. design a research project related to daily life (CS_RS11IIIc-e-1).
Lesson Objectives
To achieve the abovementioned learning competencies,
you should be able to:
1. distinguish between researchable and nonresearchable topic;
2. identify sources of research problems;
3. analyze research abstracts as possible source of
topic
4. do a self-analysis on your capacity to conduct
research.
Activity 1: What’s In
My Research Wishlist: Examine the list of topics below. If
you decide to talk or write about any of these topics, which
among them would you like to focus on?
Directions:
Group Work: Pick three (2) topics from the list.
1. Rank your choices as first and second. Explain
your reasons for your choices.
2. If you could add two more topics from your list,
what would you add? Why? Write your answer
on a one whole sheet of intermediate paper.
a. Forensic Linguistics
b. Carcinogenic Foods
c. K-Pop Influence on (Food, Lifestyle,
Language, Thinking) of Filipino Youth
d. Social Media Platforms as a Tool for
Learning: Boon or Bane

Questions to ponder on:
1. What influenced your choice of topics?
2. What does your choice reveal about you and your
capacity as a researcher?
Your choice of topic might be influenced by a number
of factors such as your ability, interest, and manageability
of your time, resources (both financial and references), and
the possible contribution that your research may have in
your field of interest (Lee, et al, 2014).
Activity 2: What’s New
Individual Work: On a short bond paper or one whole
intermediate sheet of intermediate paper, draw a semantic
web similar to the one below.
QUALITATIVE
RESEARCH
. Write QUALITATIVE RESEARCH in the middle circle.
Then write the following in the circles:
1- purpose
2- strengths
2- weaknesses
2- manners of data gathering
Each answer must be written in each circle.
Activity 3: What Is It
As a starting student-researcher, you must
remember that a situation that brings you a feeling of
discomfort or something that you find as challenging and
difficult can be considered as a source of problem. Such
problem may later help you to design your study which
primary aims are to investigate, explore, and understand the

topic?

Aside from your own personal experiences, where
can the sources of topics be found?
How to write the research title?
Refer to the handout for week 5 for the discussion of the
answers to the question. Read the handout
