You should use thought-provoking questions like:
Who are these people?
What are their names?
What are they doing?
Where are they?
How did they get there?
When did this happen?
Where will they go afterwards?
What will they do next?
Why is the man smiling?
Students should acquire different types of writing styles namely:
- persuasive,
- narrative,
- explanatory or expository,
- descriptive.
Let’s look at each of these in turn.
What is Persuasive Writing ?
- Persuasive writing is any written work that:
- Tries to convince the reader of the writer’s opinion.
- Often uses personal experience
- Always uses logical arguments
- Sometimes uses an appeal to emotion
- Always uses compelling speech to influence readers.
Types of Persuasive Writing
- Newspaper editorials (NOT news reports)
- TV advertisements
- Political speeches
- Love letters
- Songs and poems

What is Narrative Writing?
A Narrative is writing that:
• - Tells a story about a real or fictional event
• - Develops a plot with a beginning, middle and end
• - Develops a setting (time AND place)
• - Develops characters that the reader can relate to
• - Uses strategies such as action, descriptive details, dialogue, figurative language
and imagery that enhances the overall experience for the reader
• - Uses correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure and grammar

What is Explanatory or Expository Writing?
• Explanatory writing is defined as presenting reasons, explanations, or steps in a
process
• It is informational writing
• An explanatory essay should follow a logical sequence and have at least three
different main points
• Logic and coherence are the main focus of an explanatory essay
• Explanatory writing does not tell a story
• Explanatory writing does not persuade a reader but only gives facts and reasons
• Explanatory writing can also give the steps of a process
