(Not mandatory in limited face-to-face classes, but is thoroughly
monitored by the advisers)
e. Review of the past lesson
Last meeting, we discussed on judging based on author’s reasoning. We
mentioned about the differences between claim and counterclaim. Claim
refers to the proposed statement that ignites argumentation or even
conversation. Counterclaim is an expression of reaction on disagreeing
on the proposed statement.
Example:
Claim: I think Philippines will be better again by having good leaders.
Counterclaim: It would not merely depend on leaders but on how
disciplined and competent the citizens are, according to my grandfather
who is a farmer. But having performing leaders is also crucial.
f. Checking of the homework
Before we ended the discussion last session, I left you a homework
which is about reading an essay about the speech of Barack Obama.
What are the two partisans mentioned in the essay?
(Democrats and Republicans)
Let us answer the follow-up activity in which you are going to identify
selected statements from the essay as Factual or Subjective. Write ‘F’
for Factual and ‘S’ for Subjective.
B. Motivation
And now, I will present to you 4 (four) pictures. This is four pics 1 word.
However, there is not one specific answer as long as it may describe the
pictures. Again, write only one word best describe the pictures. That would be
worth 10 points.
(Probable answers are discrimination, discriminating, judging, judgment,
prejudiced)
The word worth giving is ‘discrimination’.
Who knows the different forms of discrimination?
Let us remember and be guided of the different forms by identifying the
pictures to be presented in sequence.
(Age, Gender, Disability, Religious and Racial Discrimination)
C. Presentation/Discussion
Humans are judges by nature. It’s the truth that cannot be denied. It is through
judging that we learn the most. It is about selecting and deciding which part is
compromised and should be changed and/or accepted.
In reading, judging details require keen observation. And reading needs to be
validated on its effectiveness.
Effectiveness, on the one hand, must have aspects such as sufficiency,
accuracy, appeal and information. We always need these aspects as well when
we need to know something like news or updated information in our respective
roles in life.
D. Activity
To check your comprehension, let us have a short quiz. On any sheet of paper,
answer the activity on the next page of your module, the True or False part of
five items.
(Answers are checked right away)
(Answers:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

E. Analysis
I supposed you understood it very well. Remember that adding false
information to any material or speech makes your output not acceptable and
could even make you sound a joke in front of people. Effectiveness means
creating a good output and an impact to the readers and/or listeners so always
provide the factual one with an adequate information from reliable source.
Everything we present will always need validity. It may be based on our own
assessment or from others.
F. Abstraction
Remember that ‘discriminating others’ means judging them. As far as we are
capable of doing this, we must learn as well to use judging techniques in our
written essays or speech. That whatever information we provide, we always
have to attempt on effectiveness not only to provide a good output but also
for everyone to approve us and our point or reasons.
G. Application
On the essay ‘Facets of Filipinos’ by Eloisa S. Tañedo, read and understand
every detail and identify the claims provided by the author. Let us know as
well whether you think these claims factual or not.
(Probable answers:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Filipinos are hospitable.
Filipinos are affectionate.
Filipinos are adaptable.
Filipinos are creative.
Filipinos are flexible.)
IV. Evaluation
With the claims you derived from the essay, judge the effectiveness of the
presentation ‘Facets of Filipinos’, by telling whether you agree or disagree on the
author’s claim provided the reasons on his essays. You can determine his reasons in
every paragraph.
Follow the table below. Use the answer sheet I provided to you in writing your
answers.

community then suggest ways on how to resolve this crisis. Write this on your answer
